What's new

Future of KOH 4400 chassis/car development?

Reminds me a bit of that Last Starfighter IFS build, anyone remember that thing? Last I knew it was out and wheeling, but I don't think it ever raced.

That car and JR's original UFO car were my two all time favorite PBB build threads. Both cars are works of art and back then were well ahead of their time. I don't think either of those cars were ever seriously raced.

Edit: iIt's kind of funny how crude the IFS setup on the last Starfighter looks compared to what we have now.

Yeah so it holds a special place in my heart, but the next one will be a whole different ballgame.

Holy crap the Last Starfighter build, I had completely forgotten about that thing. Would love to hear more on where it ended up.

were you the one who was in the hospital dying but still modeling a huge cantilever setup or am i thinking of someone else?

I did design cantilevers on all 4 corners, but no hospital stay so I believe you're thinking of someone else

I'd definitely be interested to know if anyone else is playing with solid axle camber. The same idea is part of what led me to go TTB iny buggy, more tire contact patch during cornering.
Not that we are do any race car shit but we did a knuckle swap on a friends LJ 44 front with WJ? or JK? knuckles, I'd have to check to see now, to get high steer and larger brakes. He used ebay knuckles and after we installed them we discovered that it added about 2 degrees of camber. He wanted to abandon the swap at that point but I talked him into trying it out because he likes to haul ass on forest road. After driving it for a year or so now the consensus is that it handles a lot better at speed on the dirt. :smokin:

I believe JR's UFO (it annoys me a little that Joe Thompson shared that same name, because I always looked forward to seeing JR's) took the start line at KOH a few times, but never had the results I wanted to see. Seemed like it was little stuff and maybe a busted A-arm that took it out, and I think it went through a few owners.

Would like to know where that one is at now as well.

Yup, me too.

The first time I saw a Joe Thompson UFO I asked sombody if JR sold him the plans and name. They even look similar.

JR1 Any idea where the original UFO ended up?
OG UFO tradded hands maybe 3 months ago so IDK where it is now, but it used to be in bama

I ran into it at Schofield's shop a while back.
It was a lot smaller than I imagined it to be and, just like Thompson's UFO, looked like a massive paint to work on IMO

I think they might not talk anymore lol
Possible. I’m currently on his shit list. He brought me 8 tire liners to KOH I was supposed to go buy. I forgot to go find him so he hauled them to KOH and then back home for nothing. He’s not real interested in the apology at the moment, and I don’t blame him.

I know no context around that rig, but from what he said on the live stream this year it sounds like he ended up reworking a decent chunk of it that he wasn't expecting to. Looks like a slick rig though

What other stand out builds are there from back in the day. Whatever happened to Napiers(?) Penhall buggy?

Triple Nickle Racing was another one I remember from the old place... or was that the Penhall car?
That was Wyatt Pemberton, he retired from racing, started and hosted the talent tank podcast for 50 episodes, got in a pissing match with Dave Cole, and the stopped his podcast.

He talks about how that car was cutting edge at it's time, but had lots of issues and wouldn't hold a candle to today's U4 cars.

Napiers has been bought/sold a few times I believe. There was also a twin car built by Penhall as well. No idea where either of them are now. Alex Wacker raced one of them for a little bit.

Different cars. The 555 Unicorn was built/modified by a few different people IIRC including Trent Fab and EZ Rick. No idea where it is now either

Napiers old Penhall car is in the Horschel stable now. Rick Lavezo raced it at KOH in the 4400 race but I don’t know how he did with it

So none of you guys would innovate if you had an opportunity to field a decent budget U4 car at KOH, just run what everyone else is running. I see how it is :flipoff2:
Innovation doesn't need to come from giant leaps. Today's independent front/solid rear cars are leaps and bounds better than they were 10 years ago, but the layman would think they're all the same. My buddy has raced/co-drove 4 solid axle Jimmy's cars, all purchased used, and of varying vintage. It's amazing how much better the newer ones are.

I think it's hard to find the little things to improve if you're not in the thick of it and looking for ways to improve.

Who had the black buggy at KOH a few years ago with the wild suspension that looked TTB(ish) and had Weisman (I think) stickers on it? I remember watching it qualify and the bump steer was absolutely atrocious.

It’s that thing. Cool concept. Needed refined but the owner/builder was never the right guy for this sport. Worst steering I’ve ever seen and bringing it up again, I’m a steering nerd. So that’s saying something.

I wonder what he does for a living
