What's new

Future of KOH 4400 chassis/car development?

Independent both ends.

Don't get your hopes up, I've got project ADD.

Forgot about that thread too.:beer:.

So back to the Duratec 2.5, which engine management system? Stock, MS2 system like mjlogan88 or something else?

I wouldn't do stock, and I probably wouldn't do megasquirt for that application. Its fairly behind the times, there are better options out there now days. Others would know better than I do.

If you want a 10 speed, factory computer for now. Not sure how tuneable the trans is though. Would need to get rid of the lockup in the converter.

Slawson doesn’t run motec and he’s on everyone’s list of potential podium contenders every year.
Oh I’m not saying it can’t be done with other systems, I’m simply saying if cost is an issue at that point you are in the wrong game.

It just depends how much you want to play with data.
If you have someone in your team that can manage it, more is always better.

The only benefit to Motec is having the ability to custom make software and that it's famous thus has a big support system.
Plenty of other options out there, it's just a game of how good you are or how much you can afford.
Nobody in F1, DTM or WRC runs Motec.

If you're cheap or trying to be cost effective, OEM ECU and have a separate data logger for what you consider important. Most dashes can be setup as such.

I wouldn't run a Holley on anything boosted that's competitive for the sole reason alone that you can't close loop individual cylinders on the fly. Not even banks for pete's sake. That's fucking early 2000s shit damnit.

Because that's how you break an auto trans. The 4L80's Culhane does for pre-runners have a switch to disable lock up when off road. I ASSume that the 10R's aren't any more shock load resistant than the older trans.

So we build tons of transmission killing heat with converter slip to not kill the trans. Intresting concept.....

It sounds like the desert guys need to look at circle track/road race cush drive hubs and figure out a way to implement something like that into their design.

Been tried for many years/decades. They overheat and burn up. Used in short spurt stuff only. Comon today are sprags in the diffs to reduce the back slapping in the gears, etc. But you may not have a reverse as a result. 4500-5000 stall converters seems to help the broken carnage....if the driver can get of the gas. Notice Many of the big Dez Trucks pulse the throttle instead of steady. Not always...but a lot of the time. Maybe someone can explain better. Probably like Heal-toe technique.

Interesting...i always thought the throttle blip was because they're used to riding two- strokes around. Or maybe monster truck drivers in the spare time

Do any current KOH cars run individual cyl o2's? Could have sworn you could do individual cylinder on a Dominator?

I think you could get it good enough for what it's for on the dyno with good data acquisition, then be good enough on one or 2 o2's. Look at cylinder to cylinder and tune around the lazy one. This isn't razor edge every last fraction of a HP counts like drag racing or F1. Goal 1 is keep it alive, decent useable power is second.

You're point about someone on the team to manage data is important. I see so many guys with powerful ECU's roaming the pits looking for someone with a laptop to help them. Much less understand the basics of what that ECU is doing.

You can't even close loop banks individually.
Perfect for the trail rider or C10 hotrod swap guy, but it's garbage for motorsports.

Time to put up or shut up
Finish 1st for 25% the cost

Drool, that is all.

Here’s a fun hypothetical. Rich Aunt/Uncle you didn’t know dies and leaves 1 million to you to fund a 4400 entry for KOH 2025.

Do you build the IBB Mystery Machine, or buy that $250k Gomez car or one of the two Campbell cars ($285k Crofts or $250k Shannon’s) or throw money at Erik Miller/buy John Grounds Miller car for $250k or throw money at Slawson??

I'm not a pioneer.
I'd build a new Miller car and pay them to teach me / prep and pit the car in the race.

I’d build the mystery machine to try something new and different. I used to be dead set on KISS and doing what’s tried and true. But with my last two builds I’ve become a firm believer in the IFS even in the rocks.

But with my last two builds I’ve become a firm believer in the IFS even in the rocks.

I was never really an IFS fan until watching the last few KOH races and seeing how well those cars go through the rocks. IFS cars seem to float through the nuisance rock gardens without slowing down where the SA cars, if keeping the same pace, get tossed and thrown all over.
