Dark twisted movies, looking for them

I’m mostly dead inside and I watch zero tv. Movies are it, so shock me. I sift through a lot of dumb movies to get to the occasional good one.

Thing with some of the series out there now, or at least the ones I posted - just a really long movie cut into sections. As opposed to the opposite end of the spectrum which would be a sitcom or twelve year long tv show

The ending in The Mist got me.

So, because they made some stupid anti-gun ending and strayed from King’s perfect ending, I always stop this movie as they run out of gas. It was such a good rendition from the novella, ruined by a shitty Hollywood ending. Otherwise a great movie. Even better if you watch the black and white version.

Not incredibly dark but, one of a kind i think.

How have I never heard of this?! Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy…:smokin:

Mandy. Totally fucked Nic Cage movie that’s trippy as hell, incredibly violent, and overall disturbing.

I know you said you don’t want tv shows, but there’s an outstanding one on Netflix simply called Dark. It’s a real mindfuck—very dark, occasionally violent, always requires concentration to follow. Gotta read the subtitles, though—it’s German.

Nicholas Cage Movie. JOE

No gore, but lots of intrigue:
The Prestige
The illusionist

For very dark, haunting, non-violent—The Lives of Others. It’s about a Stasi agent spying on an East German celebrity couple. It wouldn’t feel so dark if it weren’t the direction society is headed.

For very cerebral, extreme slow burn darkness/time travel confusion: Primer. That one was supposedly made for $75k or something.

Kate on Netflix is pretty good. No big suspense or anything, more of a John Wick with a female lead in Japan. Nice and bloody.

Don't worry darling was twisted enough that I thought about it for a week or two after. Surprisingly good.

Does not fit the genre the OP asked for but a really good film.

That looks good. Might not go on his list but it is on mine

You won't be disappointed. There are a couple longish scenes where Bardiem goes on a tangent, but it's got some interesting twists and thought-provoking turns in it for sure.

I'm not a Cameron Diaz fan (or Rosie Perez either who has a very small part) but it's still a very good flick.

Depends on definition of "dark" but here are some more favorites that are on permanent re-watch . They can be considered dark if you do a character study on the roles. But, these are more mainstream, so can be watched with significant other, kids, etc.

Payback (there are two versions. the one with Faye Dunaway as narrator is "darker")
The Limey - has the violence
The Departed - has the violence and the twist
Confidence - not necessarily dark, but has the twist
Usual Suspects - same as above.
Sexy Beast - same as above.

To throw out war movies, the top three Vietnam flicks have a lot of darkness (I saw all of these pre-teen I'm guessing)
Apocalypse Now (and the documentary "Hearts of Darkness - everyone almost went insane during the filming)
Full Metal Jacket (Kubrick - duh)
Platoon (Oliver Stone - duh)

And if we want to go to TV series, Ray Donovan will send you places.

My definition of "dark" is probably aligned with most posting in this thread. And someone said it earlier, horror/jump-scare/slasher =/= dark. I was part of the OG that saw Blair Witch before the gig was up and I don't need that in my life; especially since I am located close to where it was filmed. I did not like finding talismans in the woods as a yute. Cerebral darkness I can handle; horror, less so.

Obviously there’s a lot of crossover in Hollywood. People trying to mix and match to make a story people want to go see in the theater. Supernatural and slashers don’t do anything for me, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t movies with those facets in them that I don’t like.

Here’s a random addition to mention that I like for whatever dark reason I enjoy them. Just so you know, I prefer to watch a new movie for the first time on mushrooms 🍄. So that can go both horribly wrong or horribly right. The Cell is my absolute favorite movie of all time, it’s 24 years old and still trips me out. CGI pairs great with 🍄 so that also goes with my likes.

Misery
A clockwork orange
Tron and Tron Legacy
Blade runner and BL 2049
Black Snake Moan
Ready Player 1
Resident Evil
The Beach
8mm
Seven
Fatal Attraction
Anon
Chloe
Taken
Equalizer
Derailed
nobody
John Wick

Etc. Etc. Etc.

Well, in that case: Kung Pow, Enter the Fist :flipoff2:

I thought it was the worst movie ever until I saw it in a similar state many years ago in college.

Mind bender and good movie. No Gore, but an awesome soundtrack.

Rudderless.

Soul Survivors

I watched this with my (now ex) wife a couple of decades ago. She was confused and could not figure out WTF was going on; I figured out what was going on long, long before it was actually revealed in the movie. Once it was revealed, she was like "oh, now it makes sense". So, it's a fun one to watch with other people as some will "get it" and some will be like "WTF is going on, this doesn't make sense".

I liked Sixth Sense for the same reason. (When the kid said "I see dead people, some of them don't know they're dead", that is the moment I knew)

End of Watch has some messed up scenarios, good acting, and a lot of scenes with outcomes that could go many ways.

Nightcrawler is also a good thriller
