The skid steer thread

I could use some advice if anyone is willing.
I put new Duroforce wheels (the big ones, inside the tracks at the front and back) on my ASV SR80 last November. I have put roughly 100 hours on it since then.
The new wheels are delaminating. The rubber is coming off the outside of the wheel.
The wheels have a 15 month warranty, and Track Loader Parts has agreed to warranty them.
My question is this- Should I go back with Duroforce, or use OEM wheels? Which is better?
OEM is a little more costly, but not enough to bother me.
OEM has a 12 month warranty on the wheels.
TLP said if I want to go with OEM wheels, they will give me the credit on the Duroforce and I will pay the difference.
Thoughts or opinions?

IMO the OEM doesn't make the wheels.
So if you can identify who does I wouldn't pay a tax just for the name.

If the dealer didn't balk at replacing the Durforce does that mean they know they suck?

I don't disagree, but if I go with anything other than what TLP offers, I don't get anything back on the warranty.

The local dealer told me that the Duroforce wheels suck, but they only carry OEM stuff.
When I told them I had bad wheels, they didn't seem surprised. TLP said Duroforce does have a bad batch sometimes. :homer:

Kind of a pickle.

Any promise of a second attempt not getting warrantied?

I am leaning toward buying OEM wheels. I think the rears are original, and they are in better shape than the front ones I just put on.

Vevor strikes again!

I ordered a set of SSQA "latches" and a 1/4 weld-on adapter plate from them because the combo was only like $40 more than most people sell the latches for. I figured I might as well grab an extra adapter plate for a future project.

Test fit them right of the box and one side just barely had engaged but didn't have a whole lot of pressure on the pin. The other side, I could move the latch plate around even with the handle full locked in. :shaking: Pretty sure it's just the adapter plate's holes are way to "wide" and letting the pin wedge go too deep. I can cut it up and fix that down the road whenever I decide to use this plate.

I test fit one of the latch plates in one of my other attachments and it was actually too tight and I couldn't get the handle to lock down....but that's less of a concern and I think I can adjust it out. Gonna pull my tractor out later and take some measurements off the latch plates on it and make sure these are right before I start welding up my adapter.

Got my motor torn down. I was expecting to find broken rings because I read they were not uncommon on this model. (Cat 3024C) instead I found that the piston lands had failed on 3 cylinders. The bores look good. Mostly bummed that this will delay putting it back together for a couple weeks.

Interesting. I saw you bought it non-running. Did you ever try to run it or just went right to tear down?

I have a NH skid steer with the N844 engine which apparently is the same as that Cat and Perkins. It started smoking terribly/**** load of blow by/missing/eyes burning from raw diesel. I figured a stuck injector and burnt piston, as did most everybody I talked to. Pulled the head and the pistons are intact from what I can see. Poured some diesel in the cylinders and they held it for quite a while save for one draining down a bit faster than the rest.

I've got the head gasket set sitting here, just haven't had time to put it back together.

I saw a guy in one of the NH facebook groups had made parts to convert to a Kubota engine that seemed like not a terrible idea providing can find a cheap enough orange engine.

Yes, I tried starting it. Wouldn't hit from a can of ether going full blast into the intake. In my limited research, I found another guy with the same symptom. The “expert” in that thread said it was a dead giveaway of ring issues.

Coincidently, I passed up on a small 77hp cummins from a genset that might have been swappable. I had this motor in an ASV machine in the past. I liked it fine then, so far it seems pretty easy to work on with reasonably priced parts.

My Perkins was that way, could use a whole can of ether and maybe get a pop off. It had no compression. Cheap rebuilt kit and it runs great now. It will last forever for my personal needs, so the $5k investment was worth it

Are there any other side entry skid steers out there other than JCB?

Looking at a JCB 217 and 270 currently. Need the side entry for my pops

Are the JCBs decent for the money?

Volvo also makes one.

I rented a JCB and didn't love operating it but it was super nice to get in and out of. I have not heard great things about them even though it seems like our rental yard has one they have had for 7 years.

Cool appreciate it. Main reason is for the side entry so my old man can get in and out. Not for super heavy use, light excavation, brush clearing and round bale hay loading.

I think they get sloppy pins faster, obviously because of the twisting force the one sided boom sees.

Still worth it for your old man. Good for you for being a good son!

Was this the Amazon ssqa plate for $140?

Negative...even better......vevor for $125 for the plate and latches.

Sale is over...back up to $260

Volvo makes one, they're somehow related to jcb, can remember who does what, but there the same machine more or less.

No, they're trash for the money. Read all the posts I've talked about ours at work.

Maybe it's a lemon, but the rental we had before seemed ****ty also.

Looks at small telihandlers. They're nowhere near as good for dirt, especially if you're looking at actually grading. but might fit the bill for him.

I need to get him to try and get into a traditional front entry machine. Ill more than likely be running this more than him so HE may be SOL.

Tellihandler wont cut it. We mainly need a Bucket, Shredder, Hay Fork and potentially a blade and mulcher.

They make telihandlers with the same connections as a skid steer. But if it's mainly for moving or pushing dirt/rock, no way.

Well I committed to us buying a JD 316 at work. The demo machine out pushes pretty much everything we tried so it will be interesting to see how it holds up versus the Cat 226D (which should be a low bar).

Going today to look at a Bobcat 540.

Hour meter says 2200 hours. Guess I'll see by the condition of the pins if that was just the last time the meter worked.

Guessing it's a mid 80s machine, and I think it uses standard quick tach. It's a 4 foot wide machine so I don't think it's a mini quick tach.

Gasoline 22 hp belt drive. Don't need it, but like land, they ain't making any more of them.

Asking 9k CDN with all new tires.

Only 4 shown for recent auction results. That price isn't horrible with the new tires, assuming everything else is serviceable. Obviously I'd try to nock a grand or two off if he'll bite.

Finally got my adapter plates in for the conversion carriage for the JCB. Couldn't find anyone who could plasma 1" locally and ended up finding a guy on ebay that was selling them for a different model. Sent him my CAD files and he knocked them out for about $280 per pair. I ordered 2 sets so I'll have a backup if I want to make something else down the road. Or I may just make another SSQA carriage to sell since the only 2 companies that make them sell the for about $1500. I figure with ~$300 for the plates, $85 for the SSQA latches and whatever scrap tube I have laying around, I'll be under $500 in cost + my time.

They actually fit pretty much perfectly out of the box. I thought I had made the tolerance pretty tight and planned of having to machine the bores in to spec, but I apparently nailed it. Much tighter fit and way less slop than the OEM one. :smokin: Though I haven't actually measured what he sent me. Could be that he just cut them oversized.

I'm new to this skid steer stuff... how much should the latches pins stick down? I ordered some 1/2" plates and latch boxes off e-bay and converted my old New Holland L785 over to the ssqa system over the proprietary New holland style of that era. The pins only seem to stick down about half way on the tapered face. Right after I converted it, it would pop the bale spear I built off with any down pressure bucket curl at all. I then added some spacers into the latching mechanism so that it cannot push the pin back out once it pops over center and it has been rock solid since. Just dunno if that was the "right" thing to do or not. Should I have opened up the holes on my plate more to allow more of the tapered part of the pin to come through?

I only have that one attachment with the plates I ordered set up so far. I did get another skid steer the other day for cheap. New Holland L170 for $2250 with a stuck engine. Came with a bucket with a tooth bar so that was worth almost half of what I gave for the entire skid steer. I removed the bucket from the new to me skid steer and attached it to my L785. Hooked up fine other than maybe being just a tad tighter to pop over center with my bushings in there. Worked good though.

I already put these pics in the other skid steer thread in GCC, but might as well put them here too. I gotta get some pictures of my L785 I got going now too. I never took any.

My project 257B is a runner! Everything on the hydro side checks out. Feels very weird to run after only running bobcats. Suspension is nice though. LH track slips under load and needs replaced though. :(

For tracks, can anyone offer feedback on the variety of aftermarket tracks available compared to the OEM ones? Local caterpillar dealer has OEM in stock for 2100. Looks like the aftermarket ones are about $800 cheaper after shipping. I’m kind of tempted to go OEM.

I've been running a set of Bridgestone "C-bar" on my T190 for the past 5 years and they have about 1k hours on them and other than some cuts from working in quartz and some old scrap piles, they are holding up great. Just anecdotal for any decisions you may make. I'll probably go name brand whenever these are finally falling apart. I anticipate mine will dry rot before I wear them out. I also rarely, if ever run on asphalt and the majority of my work is in the woods, pasture, or #57 gravel driveway.

We offer CAT branded aftermarket tracks at our dealership.
We sold a ton of them during a buy one get one free promotion, they are reported to be "not as good" by customers but many don't say they are bad, just not as good...
