huge explosion in Lebanon

Read the "Safety Features" section of the Tech Sheet arse_sidewards posted.

So while there was 2700 tons of Ammonium Nitrate, it in and of itself is not an explosive, it is a component of an explosive. Remember how dumb the movie The Fast and the Furious was when the car blew up because of the "nitrous tanks"? Anyone shoot tannerite targets? Ever put a target out there without mixing in the aluminum powder?

There was tons of an oxidizer sitting in a warehouse, what was the fuel source? Something isn't adding up; maybe "Trump's Generals" are on to something. Someone had to add a decent amount of fuel for it to explode like that. It could be an accident, maybe it was the proximity to the grain silos and years of 'grain dust' mixing with the ammonium nitrate; but I still question if that would supply enough fuel to explode like we see in the videos.

It will detonate by itself. The aluminum, nitromethane, diesel fuel, etc are sensitzers. They make detonation happen with a much lower shock. Pure AN is hard to kick off, but under lots of heat/ pressure/ contaminants and other conditions resulting from a massive fire it's much more favorable.

What did the experts say about the AN carrying truck that burned and exploded somewhere down south a year or two ago? Started with a tire/wheel fire if I remember correct.

The AN theory sounds about right, but color of the cloud was red. So it could have been something else. There has been a few AN explosions started by fire, one was a train wheel that caught fire in Washington about 20-30 years ago. That one threw track for miles and blew out windows 10 miles away. Luckily that one was outside town and only killed the crew. It was a impressive crater and blast zone.

as much as trump shoots his mouth off he has been more right than wrong on shit like this.

Our guys know exactly what caused this. A good sniff test will tell the story. I love the smell of spent anfo. I was digging in our quarry today and it was all I could smell :). It still hangs around 4 weeks after the shot.

My family used to own a fertilizer company, The smell of that shit in its raw state is forever stuck in my nostrils. We have a shed that used to be a store room for nitrates, its been empty for maybe 20 years but still smells like its full.

This one that Israel set off in Syria looks damn near identical to the blast in Lebanon. Some sort of Thermobaric weapon, I'm having a really hard time believing this whole thing was an accident and more like someone knew that there was 6m lbs of ANFO sitting around and it wouldn't look like an attack if it went off.

I would not doubt at all if Mossad was involved.

I wonder what else they had stored down there. Seems like an easy "win" for them. Like all those mysterious blasts in Iran this year. Israel knows Trump won't make any noise about them doing this kind of thing, and it's what they are good at. I can't wait for the movie.

The red color is the indicator that it was primarily AN

watch the videos. there was a fire and a bunch of explosions and shit before the big one

I just talked to my parents. My dad reminded me his cousin is still in Beruit. German national who moved there in the 90s, and now she is stuck there.

he talked to her and the blast blew out all the windows in her building and the building behind her suffered sever damage. She is OK. Though. That side of the family has been through some shit.

Her daughter was in Nepal teaching when they got hit buy one of the nasty quakes that killed thousands. Destroyed their home and they had to live in a tent on the street with all their neighbors for a LONG time until she could get back to europe.

I agree....

So who originally owned the ship/load of that shit that got stranded there?

If that first explosion in that link is at actual speed you can see how much faster it detonates versus the explosion yesterday. That one of the things about AN is that it's a slower explosion, that's why it works so well at breaking rock, the slower explosion allows it to fracture and push the rock as opposed to just blasting all to hell and back.

I've watched about every one of the videos out there and the one thing I wonder is, how much more damage would it have done to the pier if those full silos weren't there to absorb a huge amount of that blast.
With them being concrete and full of grain it looks like it acted as a sort of blast barrier and possibly kept the explosion from potentially cutting that pier in two.

The one thing I can't get past is the fact that they kept nearly 6 million pounds of explosives stored in a warehouse at a busy port in the capital city, it honestly boggles the mind.
Common sense tells me you'd want that stored well outside the city to minimize the potential for disaster, and with it being stored in FIBC sacks transporting it shouldn't have been a big deal.

I'm also surprised that it didn't grow legs and walk away, that much AN had to have been worth a fortune on the black market in the middle east especially.
That also raises the question of how well were they keeping track of the inventory, if the were watching very closely to ensure it didn't begin to disappear, then they obviously knew the dangers, yet they chose to keep it stored there, once again the mind boggles.

I read yesterday that the owner of the ship went bankrupt and that's why everything was seized, but its awfully convenient that there's no record of where the AN came from or who owned the ship.
Also, only about 20m lbs of AN is produced annually. what they had sitting in that warehouse must've been worth a shitload of money.

"Business Insider has independently verified that a ship carrying the same cargo was abandoned in Beirut's port in late 2013. Business Insider was unable to find records about what became of the cargo in the years that followed."

There’s record. They were going through courts for years trying to get rid of it

The thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate that Lebanese officials are blaming for the huge explosion arrived in the city aboard an ailing, Russian-owned cargo ship that made an unscheduled stop in the city more than six years ago.

Lebanese customs officials wrote letters to the courts at least six times from 2014 to 2017, seeking guidance on how to dispose of the highly combustible material, according to public records cited by a Lebanese lawmaker, Salim Aoun.

Solutions proposed by the officials included exporting the 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, which is used in fertilizer and explosives, or donating it to the Lebanese Army. But the judiciary failed to respond to the letters, the records suggested.

The general manager of Beirut port, Hassan Koraytem, confirmed that in an interview on Wednesday, saying that despite repeated requests from customs and security officials, “nothing happened.”

“We were told the cargo would be sold in an auction,” he added. “But the auction never happened and the judiciary never acted.”

Could this easily be a crime of convenience?

Kinda like “Hey, guess what I found out. We got a bomb just hanging around and I got beef.

I think it was just an accident. Sombody threw down a cigarette in the wrong place or something similar, lit up the fireworks and when the ammonium nitrate in the building got up to temp it exploded.

+1 one on this. I bet there's been all sorts of fuel and other chemicals spilled all over the option over the years, they don't really give a stuff about health and safety or environmental protection. Plenty of sources of ignition at a dock even without the fact that every man and his dog over there seems to wander around with a cigarette hanging out of their mouths.
IMO it was an inevitable big badaboom with or without outside assistance.....
