All the stainless guys I know hate aluminum. All say it's too easy to burn through

Depends how thick. Problem with aluminum is breaking through the oxide layer. Oxide melts at a higher temp than pure aluminum so welding thin aluminum is a pain if you’re not used to it.

Lookin good on the AL! I much prefer tigging aluminum to steel.

Here’s my haven’t picked up a TIG in almost a year contribution. Blast it right to a plasma cut edge

I think I'm on a good path now. Only took 500psi of gold gas, a lb of filler, 2 tungstens and a week to get this far. :lmao::lmao::homer::lmao:

making all the mistakes and fucking everything up is still learning... right? :grinpimp:

So what are your TiG setting at now, and what are you practicing on? Asking for a friend who wants to make shitty weldz like yours, but the newer ones. :flipoff2:
 
another couple sticks of filler... ugh. theres progress being made but im not happy with the rate of it. Hopefully I can get someone over here soon who actually knows how to TIG to see how my machine is set up and mentor me. YouTube is failing me i feel. Dunno. They are stuck,

i maybe late to the party but long time back when i learned how to weld, at my A school in the navy they started us on oxy gas torch welding first and made us focus on puddle control with no filler rod. once we could see what the puddle was doing doing they let us have filler rod.

and its alot easier to learn with fire than a machine, tig and torch welding are very similar but extremely different.

and i agree with what was said about build something. stringer are cool at first, but building something makes you put your A game on.

for anyone having problems.


gas flow and cfm are common problems that many beginers have trouble figuring out. what you set your regulator at isn't necassarily what coming out. checking the flow at the cup can help avoid lots of frustraiting problems. i highly reccomend using one of these. once you get used to it you can check flow by ear and gift it to the next new guy.

This! I did it without gloves to learn to keep my hands away from the heat. Doing oxy/acetylene welding is what gave me the feeding and hand eye coordination for doing TIG.

it goes fine, has a lotta surface tension, so getting tacks to work really sucks because you don't got a third hand to run the filler to bridge the little gap

the 'surface tension' goes away if its clean. alu oxide melts at 3700, the aluminum below at 1200.

30 year old aluminum boats have a whole lotta surface tension. fun to watcha new guy think hes got it cuz it looks so good. then it just falls apart

I find it harder just to stack up practice beads on plate rather than joining 2 pieces. I bet it goes way better than you think once you figure out how to get it tacked. What you've got there looks great!

Best advice given to me was to just pick a non-structurally critical project and TIG your way through the entire thing. You might have to take a couple breaks and run some practice passes here and there but you'll learn a hell of a lot.
 
Those actually look good for 601x rod. Only thing I personally would have done different is end the log pass AFTER the corner. It’s easier to restart NOT in a corner, as yo can see.

It just looks like your weld got drunk and tried to walk home.

The weld above it is under the other pass a little and was knocked back with a grinder before the overlap. It’s a vertical 6011 on less than 1/8” and I was fighting a blow through. If it was a touch thicker , then I coulda made it pretty enough to get chastised for it in here. I actually enjoy a 6011 vertical if it’s thick enough not to burn through.
 
70 tp knowing you're going uphill with 6011 I wouldn't consider your weld shitty. I'd probably be proud of doing what you did. Your steps look good for the majority of the weld. It could be MUCH worse. I think I ran 85 amps in welding class when we did uphill on the thinner 3/32 rod. I seemed to do better going slow with most welding.
 
So this whole tig learning thing is cuz our oldest kid is gonna build a tiny house in a box van. I happen to be able to get a lot of cheap/free aluminum from my previous employer so we can build out cabinet frames, and shelving and walls and keep the cost/weight down.
Anywho. I figured I'd turn the previous triangle abortion into a little something to hang on the kitchen wall.

I like watching this guy Tig. This video sucks for seeing but you can see his rate of travel. I know this was last weeks issue but I want to see you get frustrated this week.

 
Ok then. Question: People here said i needed to shorten my tungsten WAY up. so i did. and it seemed to help. but then I see that dude with his tungsten out like 1/2" ?
Whats up with that?
I did order some larger/smaller cups and those gas lens things to try out.
