Tow Rig / DD / Plow Rig Tires

:flipoff2:

I wish they made those wheels in 18"

What's your initial impressions?

They roll unbeleavably smooth and drives nicer then it ever has. Steering while stopped or slow is maybe 10% heavier feeling... not hard or bad... just different.

When I first took them out for a test drive the howl (almost like a whistle) from the tires was pretty much unbearable over 60mph.
Yesterday I checked the tire pressure and the rears were at 120 and fronts were high 60s. I changed them all to 85 and the noise is tolerable now... about 50% of what it was. I may try 100 all the way around and then 70 and see what it does.

They dont seem any worse in the sand at my house then my old all terrains but have a shiton of grip on the street. Went to do an easy rolling burnout messing around and they just hooked where no other tire ive ran would have.

They have always worked good for me. Alignment and rotations and I have seen several trucks get 60-70k out of them (10k+ lb duallys).

Not sure hell love the wear life. I run the same tires on my F550 at work during the winter. They drive, wear and sound like swampers. The fronts will cup in a few thousand miles.

Hopefully he has better results. Tires are rated for 6400 ea, so good for bdl's
At a fraction the truck weight and being driven by the owner, not an employee, I bet he gets good life out of them.

Just like you know my trucks wieght rating better than me?

You think his front axle is any different wieght than mine? Bet you his is very close to mine.

I also love how people think just cause it's not my truck, I just drive it like shit.

I have a cdl, and have to abide by dot rules, I'm not out here just sideshowing my work truck. Not even sure how I could wear the front tires better or worse anyway.

90% of the driving is 60mph around here, and colder temps. Meanwhile 2bb like to run at 85 mph :flipoff2: and lives in a much hotter climate.

I've dealt with a lot of these trucks running 19.5s and never seen one get great tread wear. Been the guy taking them in for a set of $3k tires because the boss is done with issues, then still seen them wear out in 15k miles. had them blowout on me, ect. Not just talking out my ass. I post this stuff because I hate seeing guys blow money on stuff that may not work well for them, because someone else said they got 70k miles out of theirs, but failed to mention they were highway rib tires with zero offroad traction. Not all 19.5s are the same.

I hope his lighter truck gets good life out of them. But I'll be surprised. Luckily he didn't pay retail for the tires as that's about $6k in wheels and tires.

Milked what i could out of factory goodyears, 49k miles. Left front had 3 patches in it and crept up to leaking 8 psi a day. Might could have gotten another 5k out of them. Previous owner put two in that tire, I put one and found the other two. Bought truck with 33k and they looked near bald then.

Went up a size to 295/70R18 Falken AT4 $1,560 installed local tire shop. Very happy so far. Running 60 front 50 rear for now, will adjust as necessary.

You weren’t right about the axle rating, either. People paying for tires drive more gently that people whose boss paid for them.

Funny you mention that, I almost posted my story about putting m55s on my truck. They were so bad I sold them at a huge loss after like 5k miles.

M55 is closer tread pattern than the m608s

I think people in the southern states hate them for tread squirm. We like them because they work in the cold.

So the only other agressive 19.5s ive ran were the michelin whatever ones.... I lived pretty deep in the mountains and would get 35k miles out of them on an f550.

Meaniwhile on this truck ive went through at least 6 or 7 sets of tires and the falken ats I just took off are the only tires to break 30k miles. If I get 30k out of these ill be pretty happy..... actually if I get another 30k out of the truck ill be happy.

I can't obviously speak directly to 19.5s on a srw truck, or that wider size. But I'd think you should make 30k.

I just don't get all the "they'll last 100k mile comments"

Either way you got a screaming deal.

Anybody else tried the BFG HD terrains? I’m about to put a new set of tires on my work truck and would like for those to be a decent option.

I liked the looks of them and the specifics when they came out. I just haven't gotten the lifespan out of the BFG ATs on the K2500 that I've gotten on lighter vehicles so the HD tire seemed like a good bet. But then Wade's experience last year scared me off...

So update to this. Discount Tire treated me very well throughout this deal. The rebalanced them twice and still couldn't get them to run true. They ended up replacing them with KO2 and refunding the difference. the KT took 5+ ounces to balance on the two that I watched the kid balance. The KO2 took .75-1.25 oz on the two I watched. (they were double teaming it on two tire machines/balancers)

I'm still hoping that it was a matter of ironing out initial production kinks, but I haven't seen any updates from other people I'd fully trust buying them.

I'm not seeing a lot of reviews of them. I did find a couple guys over here that have 10K or so miles on them, but the updates stopped in March 2024: BFGoodrich HD-Terrain T/A KT review

I suppose that is a good sign as they'd likely update if they encountered a problem, but you sort of stop thinking about things that just keep working. The one guy with the flatbed at least looks like he actually uses his truck. Nobody is mentioning balancing issues, which I take to be a good sign. They do mention road noise and decreased mileage as drawbacks.

The srw 19.5 set up seems to be getting quiter as the wear ... or break into my setup, or whatever. Either way I am more of a fan the more I run them. Over 1000 miles so far.

And then this happened on my trailer

Over 100k miles on these tires with almost no wear and 0 problems, however the date code was from 2002. Figured if one just came apart the others will probably soon.

So bought these

Im really hoping for what they cost they also give me a ton of trouble free miles.

Nice. I assume you carry plenty of spares?
Usually one for the truck and one for the trailer. If I go on out of state trips ill carry 2 trailer tires.

This was the first blowout ive had in 170k miles of towing with this truck though.. truck or any trailer ive towed with it.

In the future though my spares will be 16" rim for the trailer (the good ones I pull off) so at least my spare wheels will be common.

I also rarely tow so heavy that I couldnt run on 1 wheel for a short distance if I had to. This will hold more true now that my tires should be good for 6k each

Knocking on 40k on the Toyo Open Country RT Trails in a 37/12/.5/17 on my DD/tow rig Ram 2500.

Getting a little noisier but not horrible. Looks like I can probably get another 10k or so out of them.

Did you regear to tow on 37s?

Yeah it's not horrible but I also don't push it too much, 65-75 max, nice and easy on the acceleration, 9-11 mpg towing, 15-17 on the highway.

End of year update on my Falken Wildpeak AT3W's on the dually. 4 years, 51k miles on the set and I'm at 7/32 of tread depth. Noiser compared to new but not bad. New tread depth was 13/32, so I should get right around 70k on this set with good rotations. Hard to complain about that tire life on a heavily loaded dually. 30k of the 51k miles have been hooked to my enclosed gooseneck according to the trailer odometer.

I had a set on my service truck and they did good until I smashed a sidewall at 52k. Plenty of tread but I got a tumor from the broken/shifted belts.

Of course the 3s are discontinued and they're onto a at4w that so far isn't lasting as well. Still great traction for a cheap AT.
