The TRACTOR thread

How hard is adding a thumb to a backhoe?

Depends on your definition of hard and how you want to do it. This is the one I made, Case 580SE. The control valve is sectional, so not terribly hard to add another section if you can find one. If you have a regular hoe just use the mounting holes and operating gear for an exhoe machine. If you have the exhoe like mine it take some more work to shoehorn it in. Can't find the pictures or recall exactly what was involved, but there was some fab work and a fair bit of cussing. IIRC I basically shifted the valve body right (looking aft) 1/2" or so (limited by angle of the operating rods and maybe clearance with something else), added the new valve on left and drilled mounting holes accordingly, Getting various hard lines to line back up was challenging. Control is a new lever on same pivot as the other control levers linked via a lower crank assembly to transfer inside the control tower. It's a bit clunky but works fairly well.

Biggest thing I struggle with is routing hoses. At the moment it's a all rubber hose run in a loop through swing tower and up the boom, but it eats hoses fairly frequently. I started working on making hard lines for the boom section, but that doesn't help any with getting hoses through the swing area, and may make it worse.

It is an incredibly useful addition

Read the fine print. :flipoff2: First is the loader valve with 3rd spool and return to dig function. 2nd link is the main backhoe valve off an exhoe machine. There's a sperate 2 spool valve for stabilizers.

I didn't know **** about **** in old case equipment if that wasn't obvious.

Found this on accident and didn’t know where to put it..

Never heard of it before, but apparently it’s electric and autonomous..

Does that mean it can plow my snow on its own while I sit indoors? Like a giant Roomba?

Input requested..

So I’m thinking of getting a blade for the tractor.. ssqa loader mounted.. for pushing snow.

Like this

My concerns are:

Will I damage my loader or accelerate wear running at an angle a lot? It’s just a small imported ag tractor.. not a skid steer.

And or will it suck because my little tractor doesn’t have enough mass (6k) and hp (40ish) to work well?

We get fairly large amounts of heavy snow, I have a pretty good idea of what I can push straight ahead.. probably have to buy it to try it. There’s a few similar used ones for sale locally, but they asking for more than new $$

Joined the tractor gang unfortunately. Grandparents finally moved to town after a peaceful 15 years enjoying retirement out in the sticks in their cabin. Last tractor gramps bought after a lifetime of farming, sappiness got the best of me and I didn't want to let the little guy go somewhere else. Little 1244 massey runs like a top, just need to fix a few mild leaks.

Why?

I was looking at adding a fixed thumb to my Kubota. I don't have the ability to add any other type though. My idea for it's use was to grab a 8-10"diameter log so I can buck them while they are off the ground.
In my experience they are almost always in the wrong position. So you move them and then wherever you move it do will **** you 5 minutes later. No thumb is less annoying than solid mount thumb.

Are you going to be digging and moving stuff at the same time? If not, I'd look at a free swinging grapple to hang on the end to grab stuff with over a fixed thumb

What do y'all think?

L4310 HST 1200 hours asking $13,500 🤔

I got 25 acres, now about 1/3 to 1/2, half mile gravel driveway.

I have an old MF165 perkins diesel I bought for $2,500 - literally everything is broken but the motor. Total death trap. Wanting something with a loader the wife can operate.

Really don't want to give up my 6ft cutter or box scraper, so hesitant on the L2501. I'd love a machine that could move round bales, but I don't want to spend more than 25k or so.

I've also considered going with the l2501 for small pasture mowing and utility chores then trying to pick up an older construction hoe, etc.

I currently move round bales with a bale buggy trailer which actually works fine and I'd continue to do that if needed. These are the big 6ft 1200lb bales we get from neighbors. They'll lift the Massey's front tires off the ground if I'm low on fuel.
