The Snowmobile Thread

Forecast is looking good while we are here riding. Other than the potential high winds.

I've been following along, and decided to share a few pics from my son's first ride on his own (out of the yard). About 35 miles on his 200 that night. He was rewarded with chicken wings from our favorite bar stop along the trail.

He's young (9) and has been riding sleds since he was 5 (Had a 120 for a few years), the 200 tops out at 32 mph on a super cold groomed trail night. We've rode twice in the past few days, in fresh snow ( a few inches) 24-27 mph is about it. I'm looking to get him on a skidoo 380, or a Polaris 550.

The size is nice, he can ride it well, but he literally rides it wide open everywhere he goes, they are pretty pricey though.

The only reason I have it was due to a buddies son out growing it, I built a jeep for him, and it was a partial payment on my labor.

I think I’m going to snow check a mxz 600 for my 13 yo daughter. Shes 100% into sledding and can ride her own next year. The next year I’ll upgrade my Renegade.

Fired up the old 97 Skidoo 670 Summit today, supposed to get some more snow again Tuesday. Got a tiny hosebarb and a barbecue/fryer injector and cut the line from the primer to the intake and injected a starting fluid cap full of gas and it fired right up. It has no choke, only the primer and the primer dries up in the off season so this was a pretty good work around. Once it started the primer line was easy to fill up.The fuel line from the shutoff to the fuel pump had cracked near the valve but i was able to reroute it shorter with the crack cut off and it worked fine after that. I will redo that line next week. Ready to buy a sticker now, come on snow. There are several places nearby I could already take it but the more snow the better.

Worst snow I've ever seen at Cooke City. Had to watch for rocks where the snow is normally 20'+ deep. One of the guys hit a rock that was under 2" of snow and twisted his bulkhead and broke the sub-frame in 4 places. Had to tow him out, 1 ski was 6" forward of the other so that was a rodeo.
Weather was nice, almost too warm and blue sky's. Hero snow caused a few extra fun stucks. We were going places nobody else could get stopped on too help you if you got stuck.

And as always, big avalanche danger. Big wind loaded slopes ready to slide and idiots from other groups are out there because "there's no tracks!" Had to tell bunches of people that's how you kill yourself and maybe your buddies. It's mind blowing how many die every year because they won't pay attention to what the snow is telling them.

I'll add to the adventures. Left south eastern WI. yesterday a.m., picked up my cousin in Rhinelander, WI. Drove to Searchmont, Ontario for the start of a 7 day sled trip. We unloaded this a.m. from there and rode to Lively, Ontario. (Just south of Sudbury) 305 miles for the day. Doing a big loop for the trip.

What kind of fuel mileage do the trail sleds get?

I was getting about 5mpg on a na 800, maybe 15-25 miles of trail a day and 25-35 off trail. On trail is a part throttle 25mph cruise, off trail is generally holding it too the bars or sliding down a hill. 8-10 gallon fill-ups in 50-60 mile days.

Tuesday's ride was from Lively, Ontario up to Capreol for a fuel stop. Then up to Shining Tree for more fuel and a soda. Headed east over to New Liskeard for the night. Another 300 mile day. Was a awesome day riding. Sunny skies and very scenic.

I run a Ski-Doo Renegade, 137" track. 600 E-tec motor. Seems to get between 18-20 mpg. Sips injection oil to. Cousin runs a Ski-Doo 900 ACE 4-stroke with a turbo. He seems to be in the 17- 19 mpg. When we gas up, we are usually within a gallon of each other.

My 800 etec gets about 15-18 mpg when we are just trail riding at 30-40 mph average. If we are crossing a lot of lakes and riding 70+ mph you can watch the gas gauge drop.

Mountain sleds get more smiles per gallon than trail sleds.:grinpimp:
Isn't that the truth!

There is something magical about 45mph track speed while you're only traveling 10mph with the skis in the air and the throttle pinned to the bars in snow deep enough you're just steering with your feet.

But damn is it hard on the bank account at $4.50/gallon for 91.

End of day 3 riding. 210 miles today. Rode from New Liskeard up through Kirkland Lake, Val Gagne, and ending in Cochrane for the night. 6+ inches of fresh powder today to add to the feet upon feet of snow they already have up here!

Day 4 of riding consisted of leaving Cochrane and riding a loop up to Abitibi Canyon. Rode over the hydro dam up there and back down a power line trail to Smooth Rock Falls. Fueled up and headed west to the town of Kapuskasing. 215 miles for the day.

Anyone need a sweat ice fishing/cabin cruiser? Decided to sell my wide track. 87 Yamaha vk540. Comes with another 87 VK and a 440 motor to make it a running sled and a 92 VK parts sled. PM for more details.

We left Kapuskasing this a.m. with a temp of -36 with the wind chill factor. Headed to Hearst for fuel, past Calstock, then down to Hornepayne for more fuel. Ended the night in Dubreuilville. 280 miles total today.

I put this together for this season, Only got to ride twice before the snow went to crap. Was hesitant at first to get a 2-stroke, but it was awesome even at 10k feet.

Havw you ridden a 4 stroke? If so, how does the 2 stoke compare to a 4 stroke on the snow?

I sold my snow bike last year to put the funds toward other things. I recently bought a 2018 ktm 450 sx for snow bike duties. But I bought a used track kit that was missing a few parts and lost motivation to assemble it. So I haven't been on the snow for the last 2 winters. 🥶:frown:

Last day of riding we left Dubreuilville, headed to Wawa for fuel, then stopping at the Half Way Haven for fuel, and a soda. Then down to Searchmont to end the trip. 215 miles for the day, loaded up sleds and drove 10+ hrs / 600 miles home.

6 days on a sled and 1520 miles total.

I used to have a 2016 FC450 with an ARO 120 kit on it. I rode that one from 3,500 to 6k elevation. That was a lot of fun too, but I like 2-strokes more.

I rode the KTM with a guy that was on a KX 450 and kept up with him just fine.

I snow checked 2 units today. A MXZ Sport and a Renegade Enduro. As of now they are fairly confident the spring orders will be in this fall. Some of last year's orders are just showing up now.

New Polaris is out with a 9R motor for the mountain boys only this year. $22k snowmobiles:homer:
