What's new

The Snowmobile Thread

I'd find reverse if you can. I find it really nice. Parking under a carport? Backing out is awesome etc.

Newer pull starts are not bad to start. Younger kids maybe not. But my daughter at 12 could pull a 500cc fine.

It's crazy the number of newer sleds I see broke down on the trail compared to the old iron.

And by old iron I mean anything where the entire hood hinges open exposing the entire engine.

You see full cowl hood sleds on the trail?

Quite a few. I personally haven't owned anything newer than '03. But that's just because I'm lucky to get a few hundred miles per season. If I was into trailering and putting on thousands of miles I would definitely drop the cash on something newer.

Yep lots of Indy’s just not ever a triple lol. But we live close to the mountain and trail system and most just ride right out of the back yard and down to the lake. When they go on trips they are on their nice sleds

I’ll be paying more attention this year. Up north it’s got to be 150-200:1

Never had a trailing arm sled and the ones I rode never made me have to have one.

If a triple triple of any variety 1996-2002 were to come available, I might have to adopt it.

What's the planned riding area? Back forty field and woods while pulling kids around on sleds? Or, occasional real trail use, two up rides for lunch?

Old leaf springers are more fum IMO for just beating around on, usually light enough to not worry too much about needing reverse. An early 80's yamaha Et 340/Excel III are fun sleds that had electric start, generally reliable.
This. I have more fun beating the trials on my leaf spring exciter than any of the new stuff. I can hold my own in the twistys with the newer stuff. In the straights and lakes I get smoked.

Any of you volunteer and do trail work, maintenance or grooming for the clubs that you belong to?

I like the Yamaha and Arctic cats 440 fan engines both have parts available cat used the spirit engines from the 70’s into the 90’s on the fan series. With a 2 up sled you could find yourself with the odd ball track size such as a 133.5 l’ve squeezed 136 in one before not a big issue just figured I’d mention it .

My Indy has the 133.5 that's been discontinued for 25 years.
One of these days I'm going to see if it takes anything more than big wheels to run a 136/137.

But that day will only come when that track falls off it.

No, only because they are six hours away.
I do make sure to buy a membership for the clubs where we ride though.
same. always buy a membership. but 3.5 hours to drive and thats if i dont have kid shit to do. wish they didnt have the meetings on Wednesdays

maybe snow next week!! i should go up sometime and see if the battery in the 4 stroke rev is still charged. probably wont be able to. but just maybe after thanksgiving ill go up for the weekend since im kid free.

I had to install smaller drivers it worked out anti- ratchets with bigger rear wheels on a 95 Polaris sks Indy 500 was a decent little beater climbed turnagain pass

No local clubs to belong to, but volunteer with the state park and do maintenance beyond what they do. (non-groomed trail) Local trails have had a pitiful amount of usable snow the last few years. :frown:

No surprise with a tcat at 22K and a 2up pantera at 19k I"d go with a sxs that can get used a lot more . The same reason Yamaha shut down there sled line I could see cat doing the same thing permanently.

Yamaha sleds were arctic cat since 2014. They just had a motor with their name on it so they sold arctic cats and called them yammers. In other words, yamaha had been winding they're sled manufacturing down since 2014, by relying on arctic cat. This is the only reason they were able to stay afloat this long.

Far as I've heard, the yamaha motor will still be supplied and available to arctic cat.

When arctic cat came out with the catalyst, they finally made something other than the procross (which is what the yammers are). Then yamaha had to either buck up to get onboard or flop.

I blame ski doo for everything.

The latest Yamaha was the ascender.

I think they did their own QC or at least made cat actually do QC on the blue sleds

Yamaha bet on the 4t sled market. They sold like crazy. By the time the nitro was out it was very apparent that they were only good at spring chute climbing. Then sales all but stopped.
I got to ride an rx1 with titanium everything and a turbo. It still would nose dive into the powder the instant you lifted off the gas.
Then a turbo nitro, same thing.

I rarely see anyone with a Yamaha before the spring now. Snow has to be packed down and heavy. The guy that invested $25k+ upgrading his Yamahas is now riding a bone stock lynx and excited about all the places he can go now.

It's probably very different in the flat states. As I live in the mountains it's 99% long tracks here and 2t. There is a reason the dealerships here don't even bring in any 4t unless it's paid for at time of order.
