So Putin is putting Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert. What are the odds he strikes first, knowing of MAD?

Really? So youre speaking of strictly of military personell right? Thats probably an issue.
Many USCs have dual citizenship and there is nothing in US law that prevents them from having dual citizenship or as a citizen of a foreign country, fighting for that country.
In other words.
Billy Bob "Hi Ukraine Im Billy Bob Jones from the US Im here to volunteer to fight".
Ukraine "Hi Billy Bob! Here is your Ukrainian citizenship papers and your AK. Enjoy killing Commies". USCs with dual citizenship in countries that have military requirements serve in those other countries all the time. Look at the Jewish military many USC Jews go back to serve

Isn’t Ukraine is on the wrong side of Russia to be nuking it? Won’t the prevailing winds just blow the fallout into Russia?

I said earlier that Russians aren’t known to bluff. But knowing how unpopular this invasion is among his own people, I wonder if he’d nuke his own country in addition to nuking everyone else at the same time. He knows he’s finished, and backed up against a wall, so I could see him thinking that if he’s going out, he’s taking the world with him.

It’s been a fun ride. I hope the next civilization learns how to power up hard drives and pull data off of them so they can enjoy all the decades of porn that’s out there.

that isn't as big a deal as it seems, firstly because ukraine is large and also not all nukes are super mega grand dragon wizard.

i'd argue there is a substantial lack of targets in ukraine for nukes. Russia has been trying to claim that they are military target focused, and they also seem to be holding to that as even Ukraine is reporting low non-military deaths and few non-military structure damage. The UN seems to agree and puts numbers even lower than ukraine, though higher than russias none.

if russia were to go nuclear, would they not ramp up the conventional attack first? Again, this isn't even to a level of what they were doing in Syria, and that was mostly just using the air force to drop bombs. Russia in ukraine is down right surgical compared to russia in syria

Air burst produces significantly less fallout, while also producing greater damage. Most modern nuclear weapons air burst around 1k Meters above ground these days. But yes, that’s a valid concern.

sure, you could say that. At least the russian narrative follows a line of thinking, regardless of feelings of right or wrong, it is a narrative being spun that actually is followable. nukes don't fit in to that even a little.

Oh...screw it. Nothing I can do about that here in NC. If dip-shit decides to blow up the world....it's been fun.

I would certainly think that somewhere, someone in Russia would be thinking....."Uh, OK, our president just basically threatened the whole world with nuclear strikes. That will end badly for ALL of us....should we maybe, uh, look into a solution for this?"

He could nuke every city in Ukraine just out of spite. And since they’re not in NATO, it puts the NATO countries into a predicament: do they retaliate with nukes? Doing that would give Putin an actual cause to nuke the rest of the west. Or does NATO order a conventional war/invasion of Russia, risking a nuclear retaliation?

People keep talking about how Putin is playing chess while Biden is playing checkers. Anyone who plays chess understands that sometimes you need to sacrifice your best piece if it means an assured victory. If Putin is a chess player like pretty much all Russians are, this is a good cause for concern.
