Rapey Snap-On Tools

I know one thing about my Snap On tools, they made me a lot of money and put a lot of food on the table.
And you know the investment.

But what you can’t say is you would have made one extra dime that you wouldn’t with a good set of SK, vintage Craftsman, modern Icon or Wiha, or any other German or US made tools.

Because you did without somewhere to pay the Snap On premium.

You arent a mechanic, are you?

Was a fleet mechanic for a rental yard.

But not in years.

I had truck accounts on Cornwell, Mac, and Snap-On. (We weren’t on a Matco Route)

But even then i knew math.

I still have a lot of Cornwell from then.

I was making good money, I wanted the best and that’s what I bought.
I never bought any Matco, Mac or Cornwell,
I started with Craftsman when I was 15 years old then when I started working in a shop is when I switched to Snappy and replaced the Craftsman stuff. Back then Craftsman was the best bang for the buck and was easy to warranty and a Snap On dealer showed up every week.
Then when ebay started I would buy used Snap On stuff for typically half of new. I don’t have any regrets for buying Snap On.

Cornwell isnt much cheaper. I have a lot of it, too. SK and Sunex are great but really hard to warranty.

No one is on a Matco route :lmao:

I carried a couple Matco tools in my car for a year until I ran into a Matco truck to get them exchanged.

Matco is hard to find here now. Last Matco guy sucked a bus fill of dicks too. I have a bunch of stuff and have to have it warranted by my friends at dealerships.

Their impact universal sockets are hands the best on the business though. They use a cross instead of a pin.

When it was tool buying time at school, the snap on, Mac, and matco guys were all there. I think I only say the matco guy twice after that :homer:

snap on and Mac guys were around at least every couple weeks. gotta fleece the young dumb students for everything you can you know

Marco sucks ass. I have some Matco tools from the late 80’s. When they screwed me on my less than year old Matco tool box I stopped buying anything Matco. I’ve replaced most of my Matco tools over the years with snap on tools. I think I have two sets of wrenches left in my box now and maybe an odd ball thing here and there.

What I’m trying to say is, FUCK matco tools with a meat grinder. I’m not bitter about it really as I full on stuck with snap on after the tool box deal and never looked back. So in a sense it was the best thing Matco did for me in 1990.

One of the reasons I have mostly snapon is that the snapon guy always showed up, always had what I needed and never gave me a hard time about warranty. He also frequently had used/tradein/repo stuff for 1/4-1/2 price if you had cash.

I question whether someone that suggests "vintage craftsman tools" and HF as a substitute for snapon has ever used a wrench. The craftsman weren't that great, just better than the newer Chinese stuff, they arent getting warrantied anywhere around here if at all.

That is a big part of it. And why I started buying Wright tools instead of Snapon:lmao:

Our guy would bitch about warranty stuff. The last straw for me...I needed a metric wrench set, and he would not sell them to me. Wanted me to wait a couple weeks until there was a sale on them. ..While I appreciate the heads up, I needed that shit now:laughing:

Motherfucker if you are so concerned about my money, give me the wrench set now and bill me in two weeks :homer:.

It blew me away.

Was a decent size set of wrenches. 8-24 or something. I'm not making payments, here's my card.... He would not take my money. Refused to sell them to me. "I'll put em in the back. And on such n such date. Drive across town to this parking lot and we are having a big tool sale. Get them from me then":shaking:

I'm probably going to buy my metric set from ebay. I just can't decide if I should get a ½ drive socket set or the wrenches next.

Maybe he knows you’re a tightwad and bitch about his tool prices all the time, so he was just looking out for your interest :flipoff2:

no:laughing:

I see matco and snap on go by the shop every week. Cornwell every once in a while
I think they tagged you as a non buying high maintenance customer, who wants to deal with that nonsense? :flipoff2:

Just buy both and be done with it, it’ll only hurt for a little while :flipoff2:

Go to swap meets, you can find snap in tools there cheap usually too

Didnt even know how much there were. Nor did I care.

Might come as a surprise to you. But you dont need all that many tools to build drivelines:flipoff2: I have most the salesmen trained up that if I need somethin I'll call. No need to swing by. Enough shops around here, that they are normally nearby

I have some other stuff that needs to be taken care of first.

Swap meets in my area suck, just a bunch of Chinese bolt on crap.

Picked up this set of torx screw drivers for $10. Old school handles from the 80’s.

I used to work for a guy like you. Then HF opened up locally and his truck was there about once a week.

We all operate on different budgets/needs.

I pay attention to work outcome vs tools used. Way too many hacks out there with higher end tools.

US Craftsman had its place, nowadays Tekton/Gearwrench/HF are carrying that torch.

I look at warranties as a big maybe - false sense of security. Lots of these companies can/will fold within 20yrs or less or they will quit making product lines which effectively voids the warranty.
Perhaps it is different in SnapOn case but I only have a small number of their tools, being a home wrench tool truck warranty means little to me. I doubt tools will break before I kick the bucket...

Should I come across a screaming estate sale you can bet I will buy up a bunch of SO, for now it will remain on a per need basis. I don't seek out estate sales so its a moot point really:laughing:
