Yes, they are called "soil nails" Once those are all in place (1000's) they fasten those precast fancy slabs to them that form the walls on the sides of highways.

From our side it's the only thing that regularly breaches the fog line when the rest if the skyline is covered.
EDIT2 for correctness. For those that don't live here, the biggest building in view is Salesforce tower. The iconic Trans America Pyramidis behind the freeway sign just to the lesft if I am guessing my freeways correctly.

Finally got the boat out for a shakedown cruise. Ran perfectly for 2 hours. Ten minutes from the dock the motor started throwing codes then went into limp mode. Not happy.

Everything in that yard was clapped out. The two larger dozers were in good shape. Never seen a D-8L before, was pretty much a 8R without differential steering.Killdozer heaven!
