What's new

Patey's Scrappy

Wow, that's a LOT of monkey-motion!

I guess it'll get significantly better maintenance than your average Audi/VW, though...

Man that guys work ethic and attention to detail puts all of us to shame. I wonder how many people he has hired on the back end to help him with this project. He has to have 3-4 guys doing the sourcing, cad work /programming, assembly and machining.

This is so much more entertaining than the never-ending mini one. I geek out on the engineering that went into this.

Difference is Patey has a CNC factory he can use to make parts along with his engineering staff.
Project Binky is just the two of them, they also have real jobs they have to work, it's like "The Outsider's" cabin build he has been working on it for 7 years, but then you find out he and his dad can only get out there 1 maybe 2 days a week

I wouldn't call a 30 year old Fadal a cnc factory. He's lucky that pos still runs.

He was talking about keeping the skins temperature matched while doing the holes, then went on to say that rivets after 15yrs chip the paint and whatnot.

I would think that regardless of what hole tolerances he has, it'll still happen because after countless extreme temp cycles coupled with bush landings.

Still, cool to see how precise everything came together.

Yeah, something's fucky with IBB. I just tried to post a YT link of a video I was watching, and got that ^.

Go back a page- all the videos in this thread say that too. Maybe YT disabled hotlinking?

Austin ?

I thought he was bad ass when he was doing the fuselage build but damn he turned it up on the wings when all the parts can be CNC'ed.
I almost wish this doesn't end.

Well he did buy another plane that is the same as what Draco started as, so I'd bet that as soon as Scrappy is done he will be talking about Draco 2.0.

Sure 'nuf. Seems to have happened to every YouTube linked video. They may have changed some thing on their end, I'll look into it

This guy man. Absolutely insane yet again, I can't believe how smooth the motion is in all the control surfaces. It sounds like he's got some other videos lined up as well, hopefully that means we still get a Saturday video too. I can't wait to see the contraptions on the leading edge hehe

Eaa is next weekend hopefully he flies it there :flipoff2: I will definitely be looking for it.

I don't know much about the event, but I think the first time I saw a video of Draco was him next to it at OshKosh talking about all the custom stuff he had done. I knew nothing about it or experimental aircraft at that point (I still don't know shit), but that distinctly opened my eyes.

Silver, EAA is the Experimental Aircraft Association. And they have some yearly events, I believe the one coming up is in Oshkosh and is a huge gathering with events and spectating. From what I've gathered, it's like KOH in our world.

I think this is the first video where I was introduced to Mike and Draco, in Oshkosh

Absolutely one of the most awesome shows I have ever been to. Everytime I go I am amazed at all the cool shit to see. You would need most of the week to see it all. We hit the military exhibits the two sat air shows maybe take a helicopter ride the day we go. By that time the kids are dead.

It’s crazy how that week that airport becomes the busiest runway in the world. They control over 25,000 movements over the course of the show.

Scrappy and Mike are scheduled to be at the Garmin exhibit/booth/tent whatever, at Oshkosh 2021, I noticed that Garmin has a blurb about it posted on their site.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but at the beginning of the vid he said he had his air worthiness cert, doesn't that mean that the plane has already been in the air, you know to prove airworthiness.

Also from reading the Comments of the newest video, and there was some comments about Flightchops letting the cat out of the bag and Mike being a sand bagger, but ni details so I'm not real sure what that's about.
Unless it pertains to my question above which makes sense considering Scrappy is scheduled to be in Oshkosh which that starts in 4 days.

In other vids, it’s been alluded to being months between actual build and posting the videos.

That's very interesting, but I could absolutely see it. With the push on the frequency of videos here, it seems like he's getting caught up on his attempt to fly it to the event. But I don't know enough about what's involved for those approvals he mentioned to know if that implies it's flying at this point. If that's the case, hell yeah and huge congrats to him. I can't wait to see the rest of the updates trickle in, but it makes me smile knowing he's already flying the thing.

I was hoping I could see it at High Sierra Fly in at Deadcow but Im going to bet he's going to make Oshkosh. Man so impressive...

I've watched every one of his build videos, hes inspiring and discouraging at the same time cause of how much he can accomplish. Id give anything to have that kind of focus.

I wish I had the cash that he used to build scrappy. Mike said he had over 1,000,000 into draco not including his time. He’s got to have 3-4x that into scrappy. Then the time to build this putting off the stuff you do to make a living.

I really hope he makes it to the eaa. I will make it a point to go visit it if it’s there.

From the Garmin website!!!!!

4) Garmin ambassador Mike Patey and “Scrappy.”

Be one of the first to see Mike Patey’s latest creation, “Scrappy.” Based on the popular Cub Crafters Carbon Cub airframe, Patey and his team enlarged the fuselage, beefed up the frame, installed a massive 780 cubic-inch piston engine and added plenty of custom features. And naturally, we’re partial to the panel. Our Team X group of pilots and experimental engineers worked with Mike to develop a unique Garmin panel for “Scrappy.” Mike will be spending time at our exhibit with “Scrappy” answering your questions, taking pictures and signing autographs. You won’t want to miss it.

Now I’m super pumped!!!

Bought two more Wilgas, plus Draco.

Will be interesting to see how much of the Scrappy build/ideas transition into the new Draco V2.
