What's new

new 7.3 gas ford

Hmn, I may want to use that gas fuel sending unit in the new tank I bought for my F550 based 1944 G506.

more stats to post, I went up to the panhandle to pick up a skid steer yesterday. read out said 10.6 MPG, hand calculated out to 10.8, pleasant surprise. it gets pretty hilly up north of Childress, it was talking on the way back home. so it ended up 12 hrs of driving, 2 hours of loading. then I stopped and picked up a battery for the skid on the way home. skid steer fired up just fine but the bucket controls are locked. I ran out of energy, went in the house and took a shower and called it a night.

Any reason you are locking out the ODs when loaded? Seems like it should be stout enough when cruising and not in the mountains to maintain using them

What you consider "stout enough to use overdrive" is not what people who buy a truck worth more than my house consider "stout enough to use overdrive".

That's what I'm curious about, doesn't ford consider it stout enough?

Sure de tuned engine and 6spd combo, but the gas class a motorhomes are heavy pigs and run od all day long. Figures the 10 spd would have enough options in gearing that it wouldn't try to pull a grade in 10th and would be rather quick to shift.

I dunno, just curious if it was a break in period thing, ford recommended thing or just a holdover from a bygone Era of big gear splits.

Id like to see what happens with MPG if you took 10mph off the travel speed.

It's this.

Just put it in tow/haul and let it do its thing.
it gets irritating kicking down all the time, if I leave it in 7th very little down shifting. and this whole trip is kind of hilly. I left from Azle to Jacksboro then to Olney, then Megargal to Mabelle to Quanna. then did 287 to Childress to Canadian. no interstate at all this trip, truck does fine in 10th with 5k behind it, not so much with 12k plus.

If its like a 5.0 10 speed, yes it will downshift when needed, but you have to put your foot farther into it to make this happen and it gets really irritating.. It seems less concentration is required by locking out a few gears in that type terrain and slightly rolling into the throttle.

Is 7th actually a 1:1 or is it 1.05 or whatever like the 6r140?

I'm curious about how an older diesel would do with these newer transmissions. A 7.3 or 12v with a 10spd would be very interesting once these trucks are 10+ years old.

On the flip side, I'd live to see someone drop a 7.3 in a Zf6 truck also.

I know ford has kept the manual transmision an option up till at least 2019 for foreign markets

I've also found in other gassers by keeping it locked in gear, it gets the same mpg as if it were jacking off.

Less irritating and has to be better for the trans, engine, etc.

There are some hills around jacksboro that would be a PITA

I have no clue about the new stuff, but any older gas truck with 4 or 5 speed auto there is zero reason to run OD towing. Any brand, you're not going to get a single drop better fuel milage.

(by towing, I mean something substantial... obviously the jet skis or utility trailer with the 400 Foreman doesn't count)

Does the superduty even sell outside the US?

Pretty sure the rest of the world thinks fullsize trucks are ridiculous.
Yes. Middle east and maybe a couple other places. Europe taxes themselves to hard to afford nice stuff anyway.

went down to Hico yesterday, headwind most of the way down there, 10.5 mpg, coming back with a 02 1500 truck on the trailer 10.4. but honestly I bet I was traveling a bit slower. I got home and unloaded the truck and disconnected the trailer, felt like I had a hot rod. the trailer has been hooked to it for almost 2000 miles.

If you want to see some real numbers check out Palm Beach Dyno on Youtube. He's got one in his personal truck that he's worked on and then dyno's it. Ford is also working on a 6.8 version of this engine supposedly for F150's.

The chart I saw said it was 1:1
A old engine with the 6r140 would be awesome, the 10 would be even better

I guess im the oddball that prefers the 6R over the 10. this is coming from someone that has alot of miles on a stock 5.0 6 speed, stock 3.5 10 speed, stock 5.0 10 speed, stock 6.7 6 speed, tuned 6.7 6 speed and stock 6.7 10 speed.

I had a 5.0/6 speed/3.73 gears and have a 5.0/10 speed/3.23 gears? Prefer the 6 speed combination. It just doesn't make sense to have all the extra gears unless I'm towing daily (which I don't). I might change my mind if the current truck had 3.55 or 3.73 gears.

i'm pretty excited about doing a 6r swap in my pickup, but it will be even better later once i can get more than 150hp out of the poor old v8.

Nobody is making a stand alone controller for the 10 speed that i've been able to find, but US Shift claims they are working on it :smokin:

Why I opted for 3.55 gears in my ordered 6.7
It has enough torque down low to pull the tall gear (I think)

A 6R140 behind a 7.3PS with some 4.10 gears would be awesome I think.

Reset on Friday around town this weekend no highway mix of 55mpg county roads and residential with traffic here and there.

That's about what my CTD gets.

On another note, I read on another forum that the Ford 2023 Super Duty order book opens this month and it should fill fast.

Similar mpg to a diesel with lower overall cost of ownership. I have a few diesels I can use if I need to bdl something but I generally only tow once or twice a month and its less than 15k.

It does. I have 3:55's in my 6.7. I pulled an 18k backhoe with a cab down the interstate with no issues. That cab stands tall and catches a lot of wind.
