What's new

new 7.3 gas ford

^^^ claims to run clapped out shit, doesn't use rigs over 10 years old :shaking: :shaking:

:flipoff2:

all my friends are richer than me:flipoff2:

clapped out by the standards of me, and who i run with. nothing older than 2010, and not under 200k mi in my case.

that old 2010 5.4 owes me nothing, and was the back up rig that everyone else used when their new new shit didn't work. they hated it, xl model shit box. but it did the job, their 450 platinum/ duramax, cumings..... couldn't. (okay i'll admit only the ferd 6.7 and dmax borrowed my shit. cumings guy i think is too proud. whatever i only make on 3/4 of the trips. i'm poor folk in the crowd ive been running with)

point being its can only be so clapped out at such an age.... i knew the second my last rig decided to clap out out. and just weeks earlier i was in st george utah. running to the floor the entire way there and back. right along side a f450 platinum 6.7... i paid less in fuel.:flipoff2:

yeah i'd expect a 2010 to do pretty damn well. i'm not comparing to anything build this century, all my 8 mpg stuff is from when people thought the year 2000 would bring flying cars and skateboards without wheels and shit :flipoff2:

10-15 should be reasonable to expect loaded/unloaded for a big block with a 8 or 10 spd or whatever they are putting in them these days.

maybe i'm just expecting too much from the 7.3 because of fanboiness, but in my head and on paper it should be a solid upgrade from the V10 it replaced in every way

i mean i'd guess trying to keep up with your buddies towing at 85 in a small block gasser probably doesn't lend itself to long lifespans... In the interest of keeping My 20+ yr old tow rigs alive & in tact, towing above 70 isn't a territory i know all that well.

i havent kept up with the entirety of either 7.3 threads just curious to get a quick update on how theyre doing, any problems? how long have they been on the road now? 2 years?

havent' had or been around anyone, in a comparative way, that has had a new 7.3 gasser. but had a bunch of recent-ish clapped out tow pigs. as far as i'm concerned. efficiency wise, its all lies. ease and comfort, are all there is to gain. and btw that 450 platinum rides like shit, i'd rather ride in my overloaded xl f350 (the one that i think is dead, or at least i'm done trying to figure out for now... got an xlt 6.2 now) sure the motor and who knows wha telse dont make the weird/scary noises all the time.... but that 450 effing sucks to ride in. even whe we get there him and his fam take/ took my pos everywhere over the fancy shit. bench seat and all, more comfy.... especially unloaded.

i'm also the guy that dgaf about 4wd, for a tow rig. the 2 times i year i might need 4wd, i dont play dumb and use air pressure and the locker do the work. never had a problem getting to a sand camp yet. from idaho to so-cal.

that last 5.4 cclb i had $6k into, i dont care to get more vintage than that. there is no price advantage to go older. i cant drive less then 70mph if i can help it. the worst itme i remember in the 'ol 5.4 was the high plains in nevada the 'lonely highway' 300 miles without a turn.. my buddy was driving and i was trying to sleep... had a stick to hold the peddle down:lmao: and the effer wouldn't go past 75mph... then started wah wah harmonic sort of noise........
that was the first time i thought for sure it was the end.

since then, gone to glamis twice, st anthoney's 4times and st george once... before i chose to part it out. got a '13 6.2 with 200k on it now. i hope to tell the same type of tales of. i expect more o fthe 6.2. i had one before this one, but... effing kids cant hang in an ex cab, puke, lots of puking. in the crew cab they good. learned my lesson. i'm not good with puke... i puke too. its not pretty. i pressure washed the cab interior one to many times. ONE to many, and went crew cab.

oh yah the dude i got my new to me rig from, sold it 'cuz he got delivery of his new truck. its a 7.3 ccsb 2wd w/ 4.3 gears.... he said he'd call when he puts int he order for a new truck again. :smokin: i asked to please order a long bed next time around:lmao:

i'm not even sure what hwy we where on, a little out of sorts as it had been 16hrs on the road... look down and we're goin 95mph:eek: downhill of course... cant getter there on 5.4 alone. we still missed the gate at sand hollow. some nice dude let us in once we started the bbq in line at the front gate.

he looked at us and said 'your not leaving?' us 'nope just found out how to get here, no point in sitting on the shoulder when we'll be up before the gate opens anyway?' it was a dumb utv event, got luvky, free passes and had a good time. buddy had to buy a cage to hit the huck it event. didn't win but went the biggest while still being able to drive the next day. 20+ft bigger than robby g. wouldn't have happened if utv trends didn't give him a smoking deal on a cage. and they replaced all the crap he wrecked no charge. i was surprised.

not hating; smoke em if you got em:smokin: that sounds like a good time.

How long does it take beating the shit outta them superdutys until you develop confidence it'll actually make it home from whatever outing you're heading out on?

well in the trucks defense it doesn't have 500 miles on it yet. I will keep this updated as I have to pick up a military Unimog next week. it is a nice plush bitch, I am pretty happy with it. but hell yes I would like 20 mpg, but that will never happen with the way I drive. and I have the 3;73 gears in mine.

btw that 450 platinum rides like shit,
Your not the first one I've heard that from but my new lariat rides very well. So I don't know if I'm just used to it from years of driving service trucks. Others that have rode with me have said that it rides well.

well the week i got that 5.4 it was just at 200k mi.

i took the service body off, put my flatbed on. put the camper on the bed, hitched the trailer with toys and headed to glamis. 26hrs peddle to the floor, first trip of many. that was a good break in trip. me and a buddy took turns driving and sleeping. after that i was confident enough to haul the family with on every outing.

it only just quit on me with close to 270k and it was kind enough to wait until we where home. 90% of driving that truck was out of state, or headed out of state.

i trust each rig to a point. but i trust those i travel with most.

lariet 450? or does it ride on tires that aren't bricks?

i think thats the biggest contributing factor. the 19.5 or what they are tires at 100psi have no give. even a load E at 90psi is a rock. the wife use's the truck as a kid hauler/ grocery getter from time to time and i always air them all down to around 40-50psi makes a big difference in the amount of complaints i receive about wishing she was driving the burban.

also about the 450/550's i always assumed any of those tires where so hard they would tow the same. well, he fought wander and trailer wag for too many trips and finally bit the bullet and changed the slightly mud pattern tires for a more typical pattern and it all went away. no wander and no wag anymore. spensive lesson. now easier to tow faster and spend more on fuel:homer:.

probably the 10sp trans?

i hadn a f350 w/ 6.2 and 6speed with the 3.73 and convinced myself i need to gear it. i had gone to 35" tires and decided on 4.56gears. i wasn't any happier after the gear swap. engine noises where better in the mountians while towing and that was about it. i really didn't like the 456 for the around town duties.

got the same mpg towing and slightly worse unloaded after the gearing. i imagine the differance would be harder to notice with a 10sp

the 10 sped is pretty smooth so far, I could not convince myself to get the 4;30s . I think the top 3 gears are over drive so I have no problem dropping a few gears to get a sweet spot. hell I towed with a 454 and no od with 4;10s back in the day and thought it was a monster.

lariet 450?
Sorry yes F450

My 10 speed is having some shifting issues when down shifting. At first I thought it was the stack up of tolerances going from a 3" receiver down to a 2". I reset the adaptive shifting tables and it seems to be better but the dealer may need to go into it and clean the shift valves.

People want the 450 because it's the biggest pickup, but when you have a 10k lb or whatever payload capacity and yep, those 19.5s, but only weigh ~8k lbs empty...... Even my father in laws 17 drw F350 is pretty rough.

My buddy just got a new srw ram 3500 with the air rid stuff. I kinda hope that catches on, seems like a sweet system.

75-80 usually.

You can get air ride in those F450 pick ups, too.

I love how the guy who posts the most in this thread, doesn't have what the thread is about. :flipoff2:

I don't have one either let me throw my two cents in:flipoff2:

15 f450 ccdrw on 17's Rode to fl a few years ago with 2k in the bed. I could feel the rear axle pulling the rear down after hitting a bump. That shit is heavy.

Is it similar to ram with lighter leafs and auto level?

I post to much everywhere, why would this thread be special? :flipoff2:
