Major Bridge in Baltimore Collapses After Being Struck by Cargo Ship

Looks like they have no shortage of cranes there now.

My buddy also said he heard they were only removing 100 containers from the ship, not unloading the whole thing.
Must be that once those 100 are cleared (the damaged stacks that had the bridge land on them?) and the bridge chunks are off, they think it will refloat so they can get it out and back to the dock to unload the rest and patch the bow enough to get it to a drydock.

Naw. I've seen barges like that when loading bunker fuel. They flooded the rear holds for ballast to pick heavy loads. You think those guys don't know what they're not doing? Didn't click on that yesterday .

The body of a fifth victim of the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse has been recovered.
Authorities said the body of Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, 49, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, was recovered on Wednesday.
Unified Command salvage teams said its teams had earlier found one of the construction vehicles reported missing when the bridge collapsed in March and notified the Maryland Department of State Police.
The Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the FBI recovered Gonzalez's body in a red truck, officials said.
"We remain dedicated to the ongoing recovery operations while knowing behind each person lost in this tragedy lies a loving family," Colonel Roland L. Butler, Jr., Superintendent of the Maryland Department of State Police, said in a statement. "Along with our local, state and federal partners, we ask that everyone extend their deepest sympathies and support to the families during this difficult time."
The bodies of Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, and Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, 38, were previously recovered. At the request of the family, authorities have not released the name of the fourth victim, whose body was recovered last month.

Surreal pic. Are you on that boat?
The seas were angry that day....

Black jacket, hat on, calling pressure. We were seeing sustained 22 knots with shots to 30. Downwind was quite the ride at about 18-20 knots of boat speed.

We race inside the harbor between the bridge and Ft. McHenry every Tuesday evening.

Mark Hergren is the photographer, he goes by Deadrise Marine Photography on FB and IG. Gives an almost daily photo update.

Mark races a boat also, but keeps it outside the bridge at his house so he can't get in. Takes photos instead.

Some pretty amazing shots in that video that show the scale of everything. I had the same question he had, why not rig those pieces they're cutting instead of dropping them in the channel and dredging up later?

Those are big loads. Cranes dont like dynamic loads. Even if you pull up tight, the operator is guessing the actual load prior to being cut loose. To little and the load drops before the crane has it, too much and it sproings up. And if you goof the rigging and not get the weight center right, it will take off swinging in a super dangerous fashion. Cranes on barges move up and down a lot as the barge bouyancy has to take on the pick load. The cranes are way too expensive to take those risks. Let it drop and once stable, go to picking it up in a better controlled manner.

The article mentions the Dali is aground, I remember some speculation about that in a YT video posted before but never heard it confirmed. So I guess that one youtube guy was right. It also mentioned it will get repaired to reenter commercial service.

I've seen that reported on national newscasts several times.
