Hopping back a little bit to your issues.

You had stated high pitch whistle while under load and have since found a bad exhaust manifold bolt.

I had a similar issues on some of our loaders that was caused by snapped exhaust manifold studs and the accompanying leaking gaskets. The exhaust back pressure, when under load, would whistle loudly. I fixed three of our loaders over two years with the whistle complaint (never down on power, small leak) and a new set of exhaust manifold hardware and gaskets fixed it right up.

Really fast to diagnose and repair after pulling my hair out on the first one, checking and rechecking the VVT for proper operation. Maybe you'll have good luck and having fixed that manifold leak the issue will be resolved as well.

I should know how I faired out in a few hours. The whistle I have/had was only at low rpm no load, low or no boost. It would smoke and whistle trying to take off from a dead stop. Once it would get a few psi the smoke would clear up and the whistle would go away.

A few guys have me talked into believing the possibility of the boost reference sensor being bad and causing the VVT actuator to be doing weird stuff and causing a whistle with the vane pitch.

I spent way to much time yesterday fawking with it trying to get a new tensioner idler and belts on it. Rock auto sent me the wrong tensioner. Not conveniently way wrong, just wrong enough that it bolted on, clocked the arm wrong and was sprung the wrong direction. This morning once the sun is up I’ve got new radiator hoses to put on, fill it with coolant and go see how what works and what doesn’t

This is how my truck has been sitting in the driveway for a week. Letting my neighbors know what kind of a-hole I am. Bringing down IEATRKS84 home value everywhere I go.

BTW....

At least on Craigslist in my area...used car prices are coming down...there are a few postings with stupid prices..but majority are dropping.

YMMV

Just normal 6.4 truck pic..:flipoff2::flipoff2:
I hope that doesn’t become true, if it does I’ll adjust accordingly. On my test drive now. Feeling a little dumb that I thought I had a bad turbo or two when it was just an exhaust leak and bad boost reference sensor. I won’t know sure till I latch onto a trailer and give it a pull. That was where the problem showed it’s face most.

I have 6 friends that had 6.0 and 6.4 trucks...I owned a 08 6.4 truck...

Out of ALL of them only 1 went 100k without egr or head gasket issues...2 of the 6.0 were full bulletproof and still had issues....

The one that went 100k ended up going 210k before he sold it...no major issues

Hope yours ends up being one of those..:smokin:

Out of all my diesel trucks, the 08 was the only one that left me on the side of the road with my camper and family in a trip:laughing:...had a 2002 7.3 before that with zero issues..and I liked everything about the 2008 truck more :homer:

I think any of them left on the road are past that if they were going to have problems. The majority of them were a nightmare when new no doubt. Mine hasn’t had an E G R D P F or the ability to regen since it was new. It’s spent way more of its time on this earth without it than with it. I took a gamble on the front end that voiding the warranty well before it was up would pay off in the second half when there wouldn’t be a warranty anyway. I think I was right.

A friend of mine and I bought the exact same truck at the exact same time just a coincidence not on purpose. I D worded mine right off the bat. Friend didn’t because he didn’t want to void the warranty. His truck had 101k on the ticker when it left him stranded in the middle of nowhere Utah. His son and I went and rescued him in the middle of the night. Son towed the 5th wheel camp, I loaded the superduty up on my car hauler and towed it home. He didn’t need the warranty till it was expired, I can’t remember what failed him but it was about the same amount to get him back on the road as it had cost me to D mine years prior. And I’ve made it well over 100K further down the road before needing anything.

That said, I know it isn’t going to last forever, this isn’t my last pickup. One day I’m going to have to plunk down for a newer one.

CarterKraft The CP4 replacement they are coming out with is not a new design from what I understand. It’s an existing pump that’s used in other parts of the world with success according to his video. The “custom” part is them making it mount and fit on a 6.7PSD.

I think that’s the game changer for a 6.7PSD if this works out and is reliable.

I have a close friend that fell victim to that 10k repair and I know many others that are more distant friends/acquaintances that have fallen victim to the CP4 failure. It’s enough to deter me away from a 6.7. In my small amount of experience driving one they are amazing motors…quiet, powerful, efficient, awesome transmissions to back an awesome motor. It’s got the whole package but that is the one Achilles heel in my opinion.

Anyways, in for the updates on the 6.4L. While I can afford a new 6.7 I seem to be in the camp that always ends up polishing the turds (like my 7.3) so I’m along for that and any other tech or experiences I can learn. Maybe one day I’ll learn

I kept mine stock cause warranty also:pinky:.....

My one buddy who d his got about 130k out of it towing and with a hot tune....we lifted the cab with 2 forklifts:eek:....

Replaced the gaskets and head studs....put tune back in....went 20k before we took the cab off again:lmao::lmao:....

Needed heads at that point and could only find questionable ones on ebay....he out it back together and put a mild tune on it....needed it for his business so he bought a new one in 2021

Well that took a little more effort than I anticipated but it's looking promising so far. The bad noises I thought were the turbo's are completely gone. A bunch of new parts and got the new tires on it. Ready to go back to work again… stay tuned.

I'm strongly considering the S&S DCR pump towards the end of this year/next year, once they release it for the 20+

I agree with you that the fuel system seems to be the Achilles heel on these 6.7's. I would also look at ditching the factory filtration and going with Air Dog

Used my little tractor to back fill a new sewer line trench for my BIL. It’s only about a 7K lb load but a good enough tow test. It’s not smoking anymore, no whistle whine or anything unfavorable from the turbo. And it’s not going into limp mode from trying to take off from a dead stop.

That's great news!

From what I understand, wouldn't you want to have the factory filtration after any aftermarket filters (if there is anything left of the warranty)?

Been running great. Been towing trailers around here locally. Big test coming up in a couple weeks, towing a loaded trailer 950 to Montana and back.
Good deal all around and sounds good on the Montana trip.

2100+ miles last week loaded enclosed trailer going to a race in Montana and back. No issues at all. Was really nice to have my own truck back. Looks like I won for now.

In the last month the SD’s I’d like to have are sitting on the lots for weeks now instead of disappearing the next day. Ford is getting stocked back up so the people who wanted new ones can get them. I’m sure the used ones sitting now the dealers paid to much for them taking them in on trade. Hopefully that starts the trend of used trucks becoming more realistically priced over the next couple years.

That's awesome on a trouble free test for ye ole' 6.4

I hope you are right but I listened to a pod yesterday about the state of used/new cars still and their opinion was it's still not good anytime soon.
(this is all speculation don't shoot me)

By the numbers: 30.6% of used vehicles were sold for less than $20,000 in the first quarter, down from 60.5% in the first quarter of 2018, according to car-research site Edmunds.

  • Even the average 7-year-old vehicle with 75,000 miles still sells for more than $20,000.
  • "It's earth-shattering stuff to see that your 20K's not going a long way anymore," Edmunds analyst Ivan Drury tells Axios.
Between the lines: More-expensive new vehicles translates into more-expensive used vehicles.

  • And less than 1% of new vehicles were sold for less than $20,000 in the first quarter of 2023, according to Edmunds.
Zoom in: The pandemic supercharged new-vehicle prices as supply chain bottlenecks cratered production while demand spiked.

  • Meanwhile, cheap passenger cars have fallen out of favor as SUVs and pickups — which are more expensive for consumers and more profitable for auto companies — have become more popular.
Worth noting: Used car prices surged 4.5% from March to April, according to the latest Consumer Price Index figures, and were "the main driver of core goods inflation," Bank of America economist Michael Gapen wrote in a research note.

Yes, but: Other signs point to prices finally coming down a little.

  • The average used vehicle price in the first quarter was $28,381, down 6.4% from a year earlier, according to Edmunds.
  • And Cox Automotive reported that its Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index fell 2.1% from March to April, suggesting that "the used-vehicle momentum enjoyed by the market ... is coming to an end.

  • Drury said one reason for the temporary uptick in April was likely because dealers capitalized on the influx of tax refunds for consumers.
The good news: Vehicles are lasting longer than ever, so your money goes further.
  • The average age of light vehicles on the road in the U.S. is now at an all-time high of 12.5 years, S&P Global Mobility reported.
  • "100,000 miles isn't 100,000 miles from yesteryear," Drury says. "There isn't a cliff that they hit."
The bottom line: There are signs that used car prices are cooling off, but finding one for $20,000 is not exactly easy.

I don’t doubt you. I’m reading and paying attention to every post Elwenil xr-nut and TRINDU post on the matter. They’re in the trenches every day trying to make a living a market that’s fluctuated like crazy in the last few years. XR said recently that he was losing money on vehicles because market value dropped below what he had to pay for them months ago.

I hope its all fear mongering still and the ship will get righted but talking with my buddy who owns a GMC dealership it doesn't appear like it will happen any time soon.

Think it’s for real this time. Cyl #8 has left the chat. Whatever blew out on #8 took the valve cover off the head with it. Dumped the engine oil out real quick. Filled it with oil. Unhooked it from the trailer and drove it to my grandpa’s house about 10 miles away. No knocks but smokes like a steam train. Dodge back up to the rescue.
