the night videos with the tracers and the range-limiting projectiles blowing up at whatever distance are pretty doggone cool

I doubt they're programmable set-range airbursty fuses, I'm betting they're just set to blow up at some fixed range to reduce the size of the fragments raining down everywhere

Story I was reading suggested that they were proximity fused with a backup fuse so they blow up when the tracer runs out.

Technically they are "tethered aerostats". The network still exists and continues to fly. Think of it as a poor-man's AWACS but it points down instead of out and up. There used to be a mission out of the Keys that beamed US radio propaganda straight into Cuba. There is a company that still makes them and sells specifically to our allies in the Middle East. They are much cheaper than satellites and easier to re-task. They have shortcomings, but Israel doesn't exactly have a space program to design, build, and launch LEO devices.

ETA: JLENS was the program that had the breakaway from APG.

As long as I been following Israeli and Iran tit for tats in the last decade and knowing Israeli intel yes they had foreknowledge of said recent attacks.

Our local aerostat has a diesel generator on board to power the electronics. Has to be lowered to be refueled periodically and a preflight inspection.

Why would they not use a really long extension cord so they don’t need an onboard genny ?

I watched a news ditty about the far west chinese region where the Uyghurs....were? China managed to very nearly wipe out the muslim culture that was there and replace it with the current traditional chinese culture in about 10 years. While the methods were questionable when viewed from western standards, the results were impressive, if not a bit spooky. The rampant terrorism the area experienced under the muslim leadership was fully eliminated. The concept of muslimism being a disease that needs elimination comes to mind.

Isreal appears to be taking the opportunity to replace a culture in Gaza. It will be interesting to see if they can do it.
