What's new

CJ5 wild stretch and full build (Big Booty Judy)

Just scrolled through 15 pages drooling. This thing is badass. Good luck with the rest.

Nothing like cutting up brand new parts. After I mounted the trans shifter in a decent location from the drivers seat I ran into a snag mounting the T-case shifters. Everything was in the way. I ended up making a box mount for the T-case shifters and mounted it to the roll cage for ease of mounting and to keep it rigid. Then I cut the shifter handles off, rotated them to the passenger side, and Slightly more to the rear. Now I have plenty of clearance for everything, including the tap shit feature for the transmission. Happy with it, now I can fish T-case mounting/rotation and get back to work on the center console.

Is that some kind of steering wheel cover you have? The blue thing. I stole the wheel out of another project I have and it would be nice to have some protection for it. It's an expensive Momo wheel which also has the tap shift paddles connected to it, It's way too nice/expensive to screw up, at least for now.

Thanks. Yeah, it's whatever came with the wheel, but I'm sure you could find a steering wheel protective cover on ebay or Amazon. I just wanted to try and keep it clean.

Well, I bit the bullet and modified the floor today so I could clock the transfer case back up and have room to install the cables.

might not.looke like much here, but it was a geometric shape before, now its tapered and round. Had to cut a bunch of old floor bracing out (didn't need it, seats are cage supported) and the I heated and beated a bunch with my trusty 4lb sledge.
20231208_211419.jpg
pictures don't really show how round it is.
20231208_211431.jpg
But I gained a lot of clearance! And was able to hook everything up and shift the transfer case using the cables.
20231208_211450.jpg
slick routing and easy bends on the transmission shifter cable as well.
20231208_211506.jpg
And the clocking got me back to flat on the belly with easy driveshaft clearance for the trans as well (as you can see for yourself). So everything worked out, I was just being a pansy about having to recut the floor. Everything ended up hidden inside the toolbox anyway so no one will ever see it. Time to get back on the console.

Very nice and achieved all your goals. Everything is still where you designed it to be. Well done.

When heating and beating sheetmetal.........I prefer to use the term "bumping", it just sounds all thought out and shit.:flipoff2:

:lmao:There was navy bumping involved. When I gotta break out a 4lb sledge to move sheetmetal, I was beating that shit like a red headed, non binary, gender fluid step child.

Back on the center console. I really like where it's going so far.

Since the shifters are set, mounted and operable, it was time to mave back onto this. Hole is cutout, shifters are mounted in good locations, and it looks like I can squeeze a cup holder to the right of the trans shifter for the ol lady. This area is going to get a stainless shifter bezel.

Hole knocked out for a drop in security box, so it will have storage as well as heat and Ac ducted to the rear.

I'm going to have to relocate the inner seat belt mount tabs. They're now covered by the console.

Fits well and snug with the seats/attachments/20231210_160156-jpg.783740/?hash=c5835575343d9a2a6b70eb736c2a748c

Perfect fit with both seats in place. Idea is to paint it when finished, cover with 1/8" upholstery foam, followed by black upholstery patent leather to match the seats, stainless accents and shifter plates, with solid and secure storage.

Agree on the gas pedal and clean work. I've been thinking of getting one like that for some time, just need to pull the trigger.

I frenched my seat belt mounts into the console, so there's that option if you want to go to the hassle of doing it. Makes getting the bolt in a ton of fun, but it's not like you're accessing it a ton.

I do too. I need to order a damn corvette pedal, and get the thing mounted. Console should be a cavern when it's done.

Is corvette peddle the all plastic one?

I had to switch peddles when I bought the standalone harness. The new one has a metal arm.

I have the all plastic one just sitting in a box, if that's what you need, you can have it.

I'll try to get a picture of it.

No, I have the dumb g8 all plastic pedal. I already made a clamp on metal bracket for it, but it won't work with the stand alone harness. The corvette one is the one with the metal arm so I can modify it easier anyway :lmao:. That and it was a 110 dollar upcharge on the harness for a g8 pedal connector. The corvette pedal was 75 bucks. I ordered it yesterday for the kids to give me for Christmas :grinpimp:.

Crazy how the kids always know exactly what you want.

Started on the drop in insert secure storage compartment 14ga steel.

dropped in the console like it was made for it.

got the 1/8" shifter cover plate cut to initial size

I hadn't shown a picture of the inside of the console sice i modified it for the cable shifters. They took up more room than i was hoping, but i managed to put in a cable guide/guard.

So it looks like that storage could be completely hidden. Like if someone wanted to put a gun in there. Nice!

Fuck ya Josh, stay on the gas!
Yessir! Working on it day by day. Hoping to put it in a car show by August, while it's fresh, and then start beating on it.

That's part of the idea, but wait till you see what's next.

Ok, more dumb console stuff. Stolen from another member. Who doesn't like to have a magnetic tray handy?
20231219_203137.jpg
Main lid hinges toward the rear, with secure lockable storage.
20231220_122054.jpg
box insert for the mag tray to drop into, with the uncut section toward the front so you can remove the mag tray and hide a wallet or other stuff inside with no one the wiser.
20231220_122049.jpg
mag tray dropped in. Once upholstered, it wont be as apparent. At least in my head.
20231220_122110.jpg
top cover will be upholstered and padded. It will hinge toward the front, so even if the lower compartmentvis opened, you wont see the the top lid or hinge.
20231220_122127.jpg
Like so.
20231220_122133.jpg

So the mag tray part is in the lid for the main storage compartment?

If so, if some thief lifts the top and sees a bunch of change in the mag tray, they're going to stop right there and head for the next victim.

Sort of, it doesn't protrude into the main storage compartment at all, but I won't keep the upper section locked, but it also opens backward from normal and will be latched with neodymium magnets, so it may be so frustrating they just walk off. Once upholstered you'll be hard pressed to tell it isn't just a padded lid.

More console work today. Relocated the seat belt tabs, and put the rear mounts in for the console.
20231222_142259.jpg
Much better! Now I can actually install the harnesses.
20231222_142425.jpg
No need for a cable or chain to keep it from opening too far. Almost like it was made for it.
20231222_161608.jpg
20231222_161618.jpg
Upper section flipped forward to access the removable mag tray. Handy on the trail too, whenever stuff has to come apart, extra hidden storage if you pull the tray and stuff things under the front.

20231222_162644.jpg
seats installed with good access all around.

Started on the shifter cover plate. 1/8" 316 stainless
20231222_173308.jpg
Did I mention I hate hand working stainless? But it looks so good when done.

Down shift with lots of room. Going to do an upper bezel and bootfor the shift rod.

20231222_174420.jpg
Damn sexy. Will look great when the dash plastic is off, and sanded. Stainless dash, stainless cluster, and stainless shift bezels. It'll be clean.
20231222_174848.jpg
starting to look like a cockpit.
20231222_175229.jpg

Coil tower covers in progress. Made a lower flange and used the stretcher to round the corners.
20240105_113702.jpg
Then made a duplicate for the passenger side.
20240105_114651.jpg
Made a filler panel for the rear fender tops.
20240105_121115.jpg
And another panelso I can install the rivnuts for a removeable panel on the front to service or adjust the coilovers.
20240105_134239.jpg
Front filler panel starting
20240106_092018.jpg
And bead rolled to match the taper
20240106_092858.jpg
All welded in and awaiting the front cover
20240106_115459.jpg
Need to clean up/grind all the spot welds.
20240106_115510.jpg
Made the hole large enough that I can add a bypass shock later if the coils don't give me enough high speed performance?
20240106_115808.jpg

Looking good as usual! Interesting to see the different design details as we are building the same vehicle. Our shifters and storage design is flip flopped. With my T-Rex arms I couldn’t reach the shifters in the foward position.
