What's new

Anyone use a Garden Tractor loader?

Bet it won't seem so funny when they want to borrow it.

The rear tires are burnt off, otherwise I might. LOL

Actually had a guy try to reneg on a deal when I bought a non running car and got it running to drive up on the trailer. It got ugly.
when I bought the uhaul truck it was non running in the parking lot. they didn't even have a key. lowballed the shit out of them, probably could have offered less.
drove it 65 miles home that afternoon.

My kids have seen me drag home some pretty desperate projects over the years. But I finished every one of them and in most cases they got to enjoy them.

My oldest is smart and talented but he is scared to jump on big projects like this. Not sure why.

Might be because he's smart and talented. :flipoff2: Unlike most of us who love a project burden.

I was a mechanic a long time.
Owned my own shop.
Married with a lot of kids.
Happy with my life.
Self employed.
Come online to forums because I like to answer questions.
Usually encounter people who think experience is fixing their grandpa’s tractor once on a visit.
Ended up here because VS sucks.

Like me, don’t like me, don’t give two fucks either way.
You kicked in the door and came in here swinging your little dick around expecting to be received as a valuable source of knowledge. What you really are is an uninvited noob who came over with the plow fag migration. Some of the people on here have had internet relationships 20+ years. Everyone was fine without you before and will be fine without you when you fuck off.

This is the place where people are resourceful and fix stuff unconventionally. I look forward to you sticking around to see how some of these hillbillies fix stuff you would insist needed to go through your shop. Except they are going to fix them up with less tools and mismatched parts to avoid over paying pretentious dicks like you to talk down to them. You have no idea how much any of these people know, or what they are capable of. Tiha isn’t asking for your help. He’s sharing with us what he’s working through. Since you won’t be able to sit back and enjoy the ride, sit on the edge your seat and seethe about him exploring his options that don’t include a word of your unsolicited advice.

Havnt read every post, but if the OP is still deciding, I think a slightly larger tractor/loader will be better for your needs. My NH will do a 1000 lbs. I think it’s only rated at 900, but I’ve done a 1000 a couple times. I have water in the back tires.

I’ve since bought an mini-excavator and it will lift more, but it definitely tears up the ground a lot more.

Since you skipped the party and
missed the middle part.

New Holland is gay :flipoff2:

I bought one.

Daydreaming of ways to cobble it together now.

Looks good and maybe even a little bigger than mine.
Speaking of Gay, Yeah I hear that all the time.

It was just a random listing that popped up on marketplace. right place, right time for once. I think I got lucky. We'll see. Either way it should be a decent tractor, last longer and do more than I need it to.

He is 22. LOL

He wanted to order some flame stickers for it.

We all joke about it. My oldest was down yesterday and the two of them were giving me a hard time about it all day.

Bet it won't seem so funny when they want to borrow it.

Well then tell him to come do a halfast job painting it for you and he can borrow it when he wants. Tell him green with flames is fine

so things I learned on a 1220.
the clutch is absurdly expensive from New Holland, but a mitsubishi car clutch disc fits it.
the local NH dealer was the cheapest place for the goofy hydraulic oil. I didn't want to try the whole "this is good enough" thing since it's gonna be in there forever and I was too lazy to do a full flushing.
not too hard to split with nothing more than some HF trans jacks and some fuckery.
The glow plug timer relay is dumb expensive. A kubota one dropped right in for like $30. Glow plugs are also available not from ford but I forget the part number. Assuming you want such a thing and not plugs on a button.
there are two ford blues at the TSC. It's the paler one that matches best.

Thanks to you I finally have a service manual.

I sure hope I never have to split this thing. Split a few over the years. Not a fan.

Good to know about the clutch disc though. Great info.

guess I will look into the hydraulic oil, never crossed my mind. The company I work for is an oil distributor, I was just going to grab something off the rack, maybe I better read a little bit first.

But once I get it running I plan on putting it on the trailer, take it to work and flush everything with new filters because like you said, probably be the last time anything besides the engine oil gets changed.

I have no glow plug controller. LOL well it might be melted and laying in there some place. Need to read the manual and see how long they are supposed to cycle for, was actually looking at cheapos from ebay like kubota. Wasn't sure how long they cycle times are though. Don't want to burn them up on first try.
Also why I don't want them on a push button, have one of my grandkids hold the button down for 3 minutes. LOL

Had a Mark 7 lincoln with BMW diesel, that controller was not available. I used a relay and a 12v programmable timer. That seems over complicated compared to what I see floating around ebay and amazon.

Great info, Thank you.

you turn the key opposite of start/run to engage the plug relay. that's it. no controller just the timed relay.
on the 1220 it was on the firewall. upper left if you're looking at it from the front.
The kubota one glows for about 5-8 seconds. Works fine. The ford on used to go a little longer, but it starts reliably in 20 degree weather with the kubota one.

sadly that service manual is pretty useless. The entire section for splitting the 1220 was literally a paragraph.
"remove hoses, split tractor" is basically what it gave me.

the oil is a specific spec to the little import tractors. I assume that one is also a ford imported tractor since it's the same series.
I can't remember it. A bunch of people said to just run aw in it and it's fine, but why take the chance? It wasn't much more expensive than generic oil and it was in stock at the NH dealer.

edit:
also mine is hydrostat, so that may make it different.

I wish I had a hydrostat. The guy I bought this from said the replacement he got was hydrostat and he hates it.

Not sure what’s to hate about hydrostatic. Especially with a loader.
I think a lot of people don't understand that 30 hp on a gear box tractor is like 22hp on a hydrostat. Meaning hydrostat robs some power.

But also in his case, he was not only comparing 30hp hydrostat to 30hp gear box, he was also used to running ag tires and is now running turf tires.

He also had clamp on forklift forks mounted on the bucket and expected it to act like a real forklift.

He was running the 3pt mower off the tractor I bought on his new smaller tractor and expected the same results.

There was a lot of disconnected light switches there. Which could be why his barn burnt down.

But I agree less horsepower or not hydrostat is awesome running a loader or any function really.

I like the hydro. Less work, less wear on a clutch. Only time I ever use it is for the PTO. First one went 30 years and the disc was fine. The little dual mass springs is what failed on the hub

Unless you're pulling ground engaging implements through a field, I doubt most home gamers would ever miss the extra hp to the wheels any way.

My Deere 790 has a gear box and I'd much rather it be hydro for what I use if for. My 5045 is also manual and I don't think hydro on that size machine makes sense, I'd at least like to have the shuttle sift version, or whatever Deere calls it. If you're doing actual loader cycle work, shifting can get annoying.

Little 20hp hydrostat is enough to spin all 4 ag tires until it buries itself.
Does have a proper low\high range box.
Lacking power to the wheels isn't really a big deal on a baby machine. You'll lose traction before you lose power.

I couldn’t give two fucks less about you hillbilly fucks and how smart you think you are. I’ve read the posts. A lot of you know a little about a few things, and a lot of nothing else. You wouldn’t know a great mechanic from terrible one.
Some of guys are fucking lame.

Look at at this cat here, he can suck his own dick.

Does your arm get sore from patting yourself on the back?

Wow-- this is like watching Dr. Phil... Here is some deep insight into people that IH Man gave not too long ago.

That is a talent self-Fellatio I hear that only 1% of the male population has it -- like Ron Jeremy!

Yay it runs!

Pulled all the rest of the drains to be safe, fluids look like new.

Tried cranking it over without fuel at first. Of course had to clean the battery cables first.
First cranking had me worried, kind of turned over like it had a dead cylinder.

Anyway after it blew the dirt out I put power to the fuel solenoid. Had smoke out the exhaust right away. Did not expect that. Figured I would have to bleed air.

Didn't fire, it was 70 degrees out.

Put power to the glow plugs for about 10 seconds, fired right up and purred.

Ran it for a couple minutes. Shut it down and rechecked fluids. Topped off coolant was all.

Fired it back up and ran it till coolant was circulating and thermostat opened.

3pt works, power steering works.

I tried all the gears. Was a little worried, clutch is right at the top. Hopefully it will last a while. I'm sure there is an adjustment just hope nothing is stuck or broke in there.

At least now I can move it around. Just ordered a bunch of parts.

Hope the video uploaded right.

That kicks ass Tiha!

The only thing I can think of you’ll have to mess with wiring wise is getting the alternator hooked up correctly to charge. You could build a flat dash and simple wire it for cheap once you figure out how to excite the alt so it charges, and turns off so it doesn’t run the battery dead when it sits around

Nicely done.

I was given the service manual by another awesome member here. I need to open it up but looking at the alt I think I can just wire up the old school ford external regulator.

Or thought about a 1 wire alt conversion but that is way more alternator than this thing needs.

Until I get lights I really won't need a charging system. I will probably go with mechanical gauges, they are tried and true. Like you said, gonna make a flat dash, but two pieces, upper and lower so it will be easier to go back and add wiring and such later.

Started pulling the side panels on the dash. Surprisingly easy. Makes me rethink paint.
But it shows the heat damage didn't go too deep.

Need to check ohms on fuel sending unit so I can find a matching gauge.

Once i got the hand throttle cable off the lever worked correctly and i can still turn the tension nut so i bit the bullet and ordered the factory throttle cable for $50.

Ordered a bunch of parts, supposed to rain for a few days anyway. Want to get the cooling system sealed up and the filter/intake so I can be less concerned about water and dirt.

Got some of the old wiring out. Pretty simple, can't believe nobody wanted to try and pull a harness for me.
20240329_185713.jpg

I could smell raw diesel while I was pulling the dash and started thinking I got a leaky injector or something. Nope, looks like a tank vent or something? Don't know yet, parts manual says it should have a 17" hose. So overflow?

Ok I've had this stuck in my head. I think I ran a skid steer like this.

So you turn the key to the accessory position to run the glow plugs?

Is it spring loaded? Or will it stay set in the accessory position?

Spring loaded would be nice, no fear of burning up plugs and only use them when you need them.

Otherwise my plan was to run them every key cycle for simplicity. But it won't need glow plugs nearly that often. So I was going to add a temp switch and then we are back to being overly complicated.
