What's new

Anyone use a Garden Tractor loader?

If you can find the gauges and wiring harness for a reasonable price it would be smart to get it close to factory. When you go to sell it whenever that is someone will pay over double for a tractor with factory gauges and such then they will pay for a cobbled together dash. Even if the tractors operate the same. Remember most people aren’t very capable and don’t have $100k of tools.

Are teh Ferds and New Hollands the same in the Dash department? I didn't spend much time looking at different years, but the ones I found showed the NH 1720's dash looking identical to a Ford 13/15/16/1720.

These guys have had a few, but all OOS now, but if those models are all the same, it might expand the search criteria.

To my recollection, they are.
My new holland key switch is accessories, one right turn. Glow plugs, another right turn, wait for the light on the dash, about 5 seconds, then one more right for ignition. Rarely need a pause for the glow plugs.

Ford and New holland are exactly the same.

I only checked 2 yards and gave up, but really I was focused on getting it running.

There are like at least 10 tractor salvage yards in Iowa. But most of them are not online.

Just need to sit down and start making calls.

Oem is great for my kids to fix in the future. Got it cheap enough resale really means nothing to me.

But I get it. Nice to have factory over some abomination.

Whole tractor just seems over complicated.

I'm sure if you're patient, you can do better than this, but here's one available right now.

Also - if you can figure out if the 13/15/1620 harness is the same, this is a decent price

Fuck all the electrical stuff. Rig up glow plugs, ignition, and alternator. Mechanical fuel off/on and a Mechanical temp guage. One of these days im going to rip every wire out of my diesel john deere mower and do exactly that. There is no reason to over complicate a tool.

With that said id also figure out how to run a full size car/truck batterey and a solid alternator.... possibly the cheapest parts store 1 wire. Id love my little tractor to easily be able to jump start every other turd I have.

Simple is great for longevity I think.

sounds like a non-green tractor problem. even though they're trash and the parts availability is a myth, my deere 870 and 4200 would hold a group 31 deep cycle with room to spare. the F935 fits a group 24/27 but its a squeeze

the little 1220 holds a regular sized battery. not huge, but readily parts store available.
it has jump started a half ton chevy with a LS.

That is crazy as much time as I spent on ebay the last week those never popped up.

I think he might be too stupid to realize hes being made fun of. He will need to consult his years of experience to make sure.

Or he just thinks you’re a bunch of young bucks that like to pound keys.

Maybe you need laid? I hear Felix likes to suck cock.

1 wire was always kind on my plan too. But really an old school ford regulator is only 3 wire.

It does use a big battery. Look like a group 31.

I wanted to shoot the exhaust straight down but don't think I can with the loader on.

Right I marked 4 gauges, mechanical oil and temp. Volt and fuel. That is only $40. Going to be hard to justify factory stuff if I can't find cheaper dash setup.
That certainly makes me lean towards simplicity.

I think at least in Iowa here more people would be able to figure out a simple tractor than ones that would need an op manual.
Those types of people would not buy a 30 year old tractor anyway.

What no deep dive into the generational divide? I'm disappointed.

Underslung exhaust was an option on that tractor.
I saw one parts diagram that didn't look right, I bet that is what it was.

The standard horizontal or vertical will not clear the loader if I point it down

Usually underslung used a different manifold. It would work with a Ford loader. You can find pictures online of them with a loader and underslung exhaust.

Very few instances I would want underslung. Only if working in orchards or barns. Otherwise it’s problematic.

Here’s pictures of one with a loader and horizontal exhaust. I guess it’s not really what I’d call “underslung”.

Well fuck. Now it's not only the number of companies you've owned, the amount of equipment you've rented, and the cost of your tool collection, but age also determines your qualifications to repair tractors?

Yeah. But it isn’t required.
it is if you want it to turn off automatically and be idiot proof like the OP wants. It's also not a terrible thing to wire it up, including an indicator light so you know it's working.

I would figure a master tractor tech like yourself would know how trivial a glow plug relay is to wire in and the benefits it may have.

12SI and jumper it for "one wire" operation is going to be cheaper than sourcing a 1-wire.

there's probably nothing wrong with the alternator that's on it.

and it's likely a 40A single wire alternator.
