What's new

An old man’s LJ build

I also need to mention that I have had a lot of help from a lot of very good friends of mine and my crew that works for me in my excavation business i’ve always been good at fabrication but I do know my limitations I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel so that gives me a great deal of excitement
I had no intentions I’m going this far with the powerplant
but like a guy that Ihave wheel with back in the day once said “lt’s a motor sport and I want one”(Dan Dibble)
so what the hell it’s good advice

Hard to flame you for stupid things like picture order when the fab is great......
I love that vehicle rotisserie.

Thank you for the compliment!
I got that rotisserie off of a company on eBay a couple years ago when I started this project for like $900 with everything I got with it

Here’s some pictures from building the transmission mount

I checked around and could not find anybody I was comfortable with building the exhaust so I gave up and called Summit and ordered a 2 1/2 inch builder kit and and a 3 inch builder kit
But summit did not offer a collector that I felt would work right so I built my own

I know it isn't necessarily "hard core", but I really appreciate builds where guys take the time to paint and touch everything up the right way before final assembly. It never made sense to me to spend a bunch of money and time on parts and fab work just to throw it together and let it rust. I love seeing the body up on a rotisserie and the attention to detail on the bottom of the tub. Yeah, its gonna get wheeled and its gonna get rashed, but the pride in your work is outstanding. Strong work!

Man, that makes one of us! :lmao: I spent a day of my life piecing 15* pie cuts together to make the driver's side downpipe on my Hemi swapped LJ, and that was enough to make me realize I'm not an "exhaust guy".

Nice exhaust work. What oil pan is on the engine?

thank you but it was too nice of a body and living in Illinois it’s hard to find anything that is not rusted so it deserves to be taken care of

I even hid the exhaust after I was through with it....

Here’s some pics of the skid plate that we designed a buddy of mine has a very large Cmc table and he set up the program for this all it takes is C clamps a couple crescent wrenches angle finder welder and grinder

After the test fit was done and everything adjusted we secured the skid plate to the table so no warpage would occur we then formed our cross braces and attach them before final welding and when we did the final welding we attach that securely to the welding table so we would have no distortion and it worked out very well

When normal folks see this Jeep they think cool, lift and big tires. When you post a build thread here we know what has taken place to get where you are. Nice...

But, Komatsu is kinda a Toyota thing??
:flipoff2:

Keep the pics coming, we can figure out the order

Thank you for the compliment
However on the Komatsu, I have ran Deere, caterpillar and Komatsu over the years the Deere’s are a joke The Cats are really nice but extremely expensive overall to own
And the Komatsu is extremely reliable and we have a great dealership in our region compared to the caterpillar and will bury all the rest in production in my size machines and type of work

Well done on the fab work. Most build threads are lacking on photos and content, yours is not lacking. I enjoy seeing fab work by people in the shops or garages with usually just enough tooling and a lot of desire.

Do you have a source for the transmission cooling manifold? I'm planning almost a carbon copy of this build (still need an engine). Party on!

I got it from Summit Racing

Great Job so far! Just curious what you are going to use for a trans cooler and also how are you going to protect the trans pan? Loving this build!!

.

This is what everybody says will work and I hope with the radiator system electric fan that we have enough airflow to keep everything cool that might be a bug to be worked out yet

MBC100 - 19 Row Plate & Fin Fluid Cooler with Mounting Bracket Kit for 1997-2006 Jeep TJ/LJ

And the forward skid plate is planned out but it is a little ways into the future because I am concentrating right now just getting it drivable
but it will cover both pans and attached to the rear skid plate in the front frame right underneath of the shock hoops

I have pictures of the guy that the purse belongs to along with the wig that he was wearing but I’m using a great deal of restraint did not post them LOL

Here’s a few pictures from the Dana super 60
like I mentioned earlier it is not to be confused with a super duty 60
The Dana super 60 comes from the F-450 and the
F-550’s from 05 and newer I did convert it back to the 8 lug 170 mm metric pattern from the 10 lug that come from the factory
it has a GVW of 7000 pounds and has a 10 inch ring gear instead of a 9 3/4 inch that does not sound like much but when you lay them side to side it’s considerable Also it uses a 1550 series U joint which these are just stock 35 spline axles If they don’t hold up I will give Stan at Branik motorsports a call and upgrade
he has all the cool axle shelves and U joints for the super 60

one of the following pictures I have no idea what order they will be in and if you’ve been following this thread you know what I’m talking about LOL
Both are lower ball joints The one on the left is out of the super duty and the one on the right is out of the super 60

Sorry guys had to take a couple days off being an old man I had cataract surgery but just the day after I am able to see 2020 in one eye and 2520 in the other
so now I can actually see what the hell I’m working on LOL
But I did hit a mile stone over the weekend before the surgery and went from a complete wiring disaster

there are still a couple of small that have to be done but all in all I’m extremely happy with it

seriously nice build. I appreciate all the pics you took and posted..... for those still thinking/designing geometry of stuff it helps immensely. how far is the center of the trans pinion to the center of the rear axle pinion? about how long is the straight-line distance from the upper mounting points on the upper links and the lower links?

my build (taking forever) is an iron block LS3 copy, square port heads, etc parts, 6L80 trans, one of the first Atlas 4.3 cases built.

thank you again,
--Sherpa (oh, and it's really not fair seeing all that shop space, forklifts, backhoes, dozers, farm land. jealous doesn't seem to actually cover it all... lol)
