What's new

All you fuckers living in rusty places

The southerners have rust free shit and don't post dumb threads like this. This is probably a coping mechanism for stepping in poo or getting robbed or whatever else goes on in those west coast states.

I work on rusty shit all the time, I'm in Michigan and a lot of the trucks around here also live on dirt roads so those are double fucked. I hate fucking rust.
It cracks me up how people seem to think rust is a natural phenomenon.

Rust belt mechanics are better than non rust belt. It's like a sixth sense before something snaps
How do you figure? They just scrap everything out or snap all the bolts and replace with high end new parts. nothing is getting rebuilt up there :flipoff2:

I think living on a dirt road and driving is worse on a vehicle than driving it through a winter, in fact I know it is, these trucks I work on that go down dirt roads daily are some of the most fucked up shit to work on. The dirt road destroys the suspension, especially worse on small cars, the exhaust system and throws dirt in everywhere that will hold it and rots those spots away.

And the gravel chips the paint making it more susceptible to future salt. Particularly on shit that's just lightly painted vs dipped like the body is. Suspension components, random brackets, bolt heads and shit like that.

Now that we've had it be the norm for a few years I've switched to thinking the liquid de-icer is actually better than the salt because it doesn't chip paint as much.

Kroil. Lots and lots of Kroil on hand.

These threads always annoy me. Last job on my truck was a wheel bearing and it took 10 minutes of full blown sledging to remove the hub/bearing assembly.

Ehh, maybe. I've lived and hobby-wrenched in Ak since 91, and never seen a brake line rust out. Not that we don't get rust, but it doesn't eat entire cars like back east.

My folks live off-grid, and drive plenty of gravel. It definitely is rough on stuff, but their junk just needs more maintenance. It's not eaten.

No. Dirt roads suck, but it's not even on the same planet as northeast road salt.

I grew up on a dirt road that was 98% orange clay and 2% rock. It was slide around orange goo 200 days out of the year. And while it definitely killed shocks, balljoints and steering components and made things a PITA to work on, it didn't rust everything out like New England.

I'm in Michigan, I lived on a dirt road for 10 years before it was paved. Around here dirt roads are worse the the salt.
I work on plenty of dirt road vehicles and I'll never buy a vehicle that lived on a dirt road.
Everytime it rains that dirt road turns to mud and people that live on dirt roads have no choice but to drive it. The paint is fucked up on those vehicles, the interiors are full of dirt, they are a dusty mess under the hood.
I have a 7.3 truck here that lived on a dirt road, the rubber turbo inlet hose split so it was sucking dusty air, it dusted the engine and it's fucked. Dirt roads suck.

Agree 1000% dirt roads suck, im living on one right now after swearing to the Great Flying Spagetti Monster at age 19 i would never live on a dirt road again. But i promise you the 30yr old southern truck that spent it's life on a muddy dirt road is not in the same class as the 30yr old MIchigan truck that spent it's life on the pavement.

I can't confirm, but it's my understanding that some places in MN use both rocks/sand/"grit" AND salt.

I think we need less salt and more actual drivers.

Or fuckin develope an actual good replacement for it and fuck the cost. One of the few things I'd willingly pay more for.

The majority of salt usage is on roads. With money like that at stake the lobbyists will raise hell to prevent any alternative. Also everyone who has anything to do with infrastructure stands to make more money if it doesn't last as long.

IIRC beet juice is way less corrosive but the temp range is narrower.

I'll raise your dusted 7.3.

Guy had to stop using his 7.3 in a plow truck because you could see the valve train with the covers on. Yes, the heads were rusted completely through.

he shoulda slathered jb weld on there with some fiberglass cloth
it'd probably still leak, but keep most of it inside

doubtless it was on its second or third oil pan
damn things rusted out way early, whatever alloy of steel they stamped them out of...

I reached out to my local rep about ending salt usage and it got shot down with safety BS.
Hit them with the environment angle. .Gov doesn't care about the money angle. More money that passes through them the more they can skim.

That's a fuel pump plate in a 2000 Rav4. Oh that's under the back seat in a access hole. No way I'm picking it up, the rockers crumble if you touch them.
