My '68 C1100 2wd to 4wd ****box Build

Im not a chevy guy, vaguely know about big block heads, oval port and rectangle. Does you average truck engine have oval? small valves? choke point?

Im not too versed in them as well. This one will be getting a set of aftermarket aluminum heads to help it breathe a little bit better. From my research, there are some stock iron heads that breathe really well, so that will be my second option. This one will get heads, air gap intake, and a cam to wake it up some.

Pulled the front clip without breaking any bolts to test fit the 454 into the IH yesterday. Had to take some metal out of the engine crossmember, but it sits nice and low. I could even go lower, but dont want the transfer case hanging down too much below the frame.

Front part of the sump hit here. It was close but would send the back of the valve covers into the firewall.

Pulled the engine back out and cut out some of the ford engine crossmember. Ill add some steel back once i have the engine in.

After the notch, i was able to drop the engine down a few inches and put the valve covers about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from the firewall.

Bought a set of these engine mounts to replace the stock clamshell mounts i wanted to use. The drivers side of engine crossmember is shaped differently than the passenger side for front axle diff clearance so these custom ones will make it easier to mount up. Some tabs and plate welded and done.

The transmission isnt bolted up to the engine, just the bellhousing is to check clearances to the firewall. I have so much room up top, but will try to place the engine as low as possible for a nice COG. This thing is already going to be tall. Oil pan rear sump is behind the front axle and i have plenty of room up front for the radiator and shroud. Still undecided on the clutch fan or a e-fan. And the best part is i have plenty of room for an 8-71 blower and still keep it under the hood. :) Kidding....maybe. Cant wait to see how much the springs compress once i get this heavy drivetrain bolted down.

Lots of good work over the end of last week and yesterday. Drivetrain is full mounted and off the jack stands. Whipped up (took me the entire day yesterday) a transmission crossmember. Its a bolt in unit using the factory ford bolt locations on the side of the frame plus one more on the bottom rail for good measure. As it sits, the trans crossmember will not come out of the frame once i added the side plates. I will have to cut it into two pieces and flange it, but that will happen later.

Some simple tabs for the engine mounts. The came in the kit from amazon. Cant complain about them for what they cost. I will box them in and add some gussets once i take the engine back out.

Trans crossmember. Some 2x3 box tubing and some plates i whipped out on the plasma table. Simple.

Pretty happy with the engine/trans/t-case placement. Its entirely above the frame rails. Should make for an easy skid plate down the road. Need to get an ORD slip yoke eliminator for the 241. Exhaust should have plenty of room on each side for them twice pipes.

Apparently the early super duty uses the same flanges as the 241 so im going to see if this used shaft from a friends junk pile will bolt up. May need to shorten it.

Thats it for now. Ill keep tinkering with it while i keep an eye out for used BBC performance parts on markeplace.

Exhausting work this weekend. Ordered some K30 longtube headers and those hung down way too much. So i got lucky and found some long tubes for a first gen camaro. Apparently they are similar shaped as the k30 units but dont hang down as far. Its a lowered c10 trick to save 5-6 inches. Well, that didnt work either as i couldnt keep the collector out of the front driveshaft when at no lift ride height. I could probably make them work if/when i lift the truck. So i ordered a shorty header to see if i can make those work. Exhaust will cross under the trans and run parallel on the passenger side.

Terrible pic but these are the k30 long tubes from Summit.

Had to notch the engine crossmember to get the camaro headers to bolt up and when they did, the collector still hit the driveshaft. So i cut it off and it did give me more room but not enough to clear the driveshaft at ride height. Pic shows it at full droop. The shorty units should help and flow better than stock manifolds.

The donor truck for the chassis was apparently flooded at one point and i always assumed the diffs were full of water based on the outside appearance of everything else. So i popped the cover and was surprised it wasnt a chocolate milkshake inside. The gears looked nice.

I think ill be swapping out the suspension to a take-off setup from a late model Tremor truck. Apparently its a 2" lift over stock and are cheap and easy to find on marketplace. Should hopefully be a nicer ride than the clapped out 06 stuff on there now.

And every fiber of my being is wanting me to buy this travelette 2wd and use its body vs the stepside single cab. Im fighting the urge so badly.

You know it's ok to own/build more than one IH at a time. Look at me I do it all the time.
Isn't that a requirement to be an International owner? If you have just one it will get lonely, so you have to get it a companion. And those two might not get along so you get a third, but you can't have just three because then it's two against one so you get a fourth. My wife says I have a sickness but I feel fine. :lmao:

If only I had the space!

is that the one that popped up on FB for $3k or so? Looks solid for the price and like a no-brainer if you're local and have the room

Third times a charm with exhaust headers. These mid/shorty length chinese units clear the crossmember and give me plenty of room above the diff to route exhaust to the passenger side. Time to start tearing it down some to get the engine cleaned up in prep for the cam swap. I can now finalize the cab mounts and finish weld the cut down frame and get it cleaned up and painted.

You are a truck building machine dude. Something in the water out there west of Houston has you boys supercharged. Nice addition to the fleet.

Big thing with the BBC is if it has normal oval ports or what people call peanut ports. Very easy to spot the difference with intake off. I will say for a truck with a manual trans that you aren't looking to drag race I wouldn't spend the money on high dollar heads and cam and instead throw just a cleaned up set of normal oval ports, a summit racing cheapie cam and one of the small superchargers on it, instant torque and plenty of power.
