Real time shit weld updates.
Thank goodness for rubberized undercoating it's going to hide a multitude of sins. Won't even have to grind!

Do it again, but clean and prep the surfaces for paint afterwards?

no pitchers, but spent part of the day burning some ancient lincoln ferroweld rods
The packaging says they deposit mild steel and to use as little heat as possible, dcep preferred
I find them in basically every lot of rods I end up with so I finally decided to try some
they've got a white and mushy flux that falls off really easy, so you gotta trim the ends off, or long arc them a bit if they're particularly "good" on their flux coverage

Piece of ancient gray iron from before scrap melting was a thing, so it is the ironiest iron I'll likely ever weld.
With some preheat and a lot of peening they seemed to do halfass okay, after grinding the whole area is a complete mess of cracks now, but the broke off foot is still attached so far... We'll see tomorrow when I stand it up.

I like the 55% nickel rods a LOT better, I think I'm just gonna use up the rest of these as handheld filler when bridging gaps with normal steel rod
As an aside, I don't really like the 99% nickel rods at all, they burn back and blob out way too fast while the flux makes a mess, kinda like the aluminum stick rods

Looks fine from here, the first pass real cold thus the second?

you can preheat with fire to make it wet out in one pass, even with a dinky little 140a mig machine

I did a bevel on outside of the legs, left about 1/8 root face on ends of legs. So root pass and big fat cap. I should have .035 wire in the mig , the .030 only gets so hot. Its a 211i lincoln, new to me but seems to have plenty of power.

Its for compressing a chrysler overdrive spring in a 47rh, if that thing fails that spring might take my head off. Drum and the gizmo go in a press and you squeeze it enough to get the snap ring out, and let it up very carefully.

The direct spring tool is like $50-60. Used to be $$, but they are available all over now. Hell IGA probably had a few next to the Fruittie Pebbles and Old Roy dogs food.

Wtf is this "weld"...

That's the ever famous string of tacks. When someone who can't run a bead wants the stack of dimes look.

It's a terrible thing to do because there wont be any penetration. It's all cold.
I'll do "tacks" on thin material but it's more like pulse welding than actual tacks.
That isn't thin either, it's at least 1/8"

I think I got the hammer forming part down… I think I need 023 wire and a new drive roll

030 blows goats for sheet metal
A grinder and high build paint will make me the body man I ain’t!

welder machine makes a difference also. For sheetmetal, I usually skip the 240v machines and dig the 110 buzzbox out of the cabinet that only holds 023 wire and only gets used for sheetmetal.

I only own a 240v tapped Lincoln
“B” and wire speed 4 seemed to work. I ground it down and found some holes so I went back over the butt joint.

Edit: looks like I missed a spot 😂 🤦

Can you get behind it with a copper backing block? A simple flattened piece of copper plumbing pipe helps a lot.

I have these: Grip-on® Plugweld Locking Pliers

I unbolted the copper end to hold up in there but it’s only about 1” of contact area and it would have been easier on a long handle as I couldn’t really see what I was tacking. It’s a good excuse to buy a copper spoon as I have a bunch of welds to do

some if you fuckers need to be ashamed of yourselves. i mean really. :shaking:
