What's new

What did you do for your ford today?

Made a hole template for the patch plate.

Made the inside plate (pictured on outside for convenience)

Made the outside channel and crammed it over.

And tomorrow I get to transfer all the holes and cuts to another plate and channel so I can stiffen up the passenger rail.

I don’t have the time or motivation to learn how to setup gears so it’ll have to wait. I’ll probably end up ordering a built third member and swap it out. Seems cheaper and easier than having someone rebuild this one.

I’m hoping it will be fine for the few local trips to the beach and burger joints until then.

Setting up a 9" is stupid easy.

Unless you're gunna get some kind of deal with a package setup ready to go, no way I'd ever pay someone to do it on that.

Having access to a press is a big help though.

Gunna drop the tranny pan and pull the 1-2 accumulator, expecting to find broken springs (hoping to), so I can get my 1-2 shift functioning properly. Right now it just absolutely bangs into 2nd no matter where I set line pressure.

Grabbed a white board and started writing down things I need/want to do this winter, most of it cheap/easy, couple things not so much.

Mostly just enjoying drinking in the garage with the stereo up.

I think some/all of my pressure drop on my fuel pressure was uncovering the fuel pump, its way in the front of the tank, and I was at around 1/4 tank of gas, no baffles at all in the stock tank, and no sump type fuel pump module.

Holley and aeromotive both sell "modules" I can use to drop in anywhere in my tank, but considering the cost of them I'm not sure if I should bother or just go right to a fuel cell that I'm going to end up going to eventually anyways.

Well, no such luck on the broken 1-2 accumulator springs.

Getting info on these newer 4r's is all over the place, trying to figure out where to go from here. I feel like I should put J-mod approved springs in since I have it out but the Internet is all over the place on newer model transmissions.

Ummduh does the attached 4r100 rebuild guide help out at all?

not sure what exactly you are looking for or what you have already got for reading material :rasta:

Well it doesn't help much with this particular issue, but it's definitely being saved for future reference!

My main research is around a harsh 1-2 shift. Lots of J-mod info, but it's hayday was like pre-97, and a lot of improvements went into the trans from the factory after that time period. So many of the J-mod points are obsolete on newer transmissions, but the dude that developed it has gone into ghost mode so it's kinda a free for all now, afaict.

Got my 351 out of the 85 F150 on the stand. Due to weather and no shop, work on the frame is ground to a halt, but I can put in a few hours here and there on washing and resealing this pig. Also broke that one water pump bolt of course so looks like timing cover has to come off to fix that. whoopee!

Agree. That was the first diff I ever set up. Possibly the easiest one on the planet to do.

I wrote this close to 30 years ago, pre-digital cameras (although I had a scanner).
Crappy article, and I'm sure there is much better out there now.

I broke two water pump bolts when I replaced mine.
One on each end of the pump.

Which bolt broke on yours; the one at 12 o'clock or 3 o'clock?

So far it's snowed 6" overnight/this morning.

What I managed to do on a 3.5 mile to and from Walmart trip:
1) Countless rooster tails.
2) Overshot/oversteered turn into Walmart parking lot hopping the curb while going 1.375 MPH.
3) Overshot/oversteered turn into parking section hopping another curb hitting a square pole while going .5MPH.
4) Overshot/oversteered turn onto my street hopping yet another curb barely missing another square pole and a large metal green box thingy while going 1.5MPH.

Unfortunately not unexpected;
HMMWV tires absolutely sucks in cold weather/wet weather.
The front tires are BFG Baja HMMWVs; which have even larger solid tread blocks than the rear GY HMMWVs.

I have snow chains for front and rear tires but only one pair have been mod'ed from 33" to 37".
Current weather is supposed to stick around for a good week with highs in the upper 20s; which means snow and ice are going to hang around.
If I have to go out again I'm seriously considering putting the two mod'ed snow chains on the front for traction.
I drove 20 to 25MPH the whole way today, so using snow chains shouldn't be a problem.

I might have to invest in mod'ing the two remaining snow chains.
Also; I'm only 2WD with the rear locked.

The long one circled in red. I knew it was going to go, I was trying like fuck to spin back and forth and be patient but I lost it in the end. It's whatever though, easy fix. Pretty sure it's stuck in the timing cover moreso than the block.

The threads leak/weep coolant into the bore of the cover. I've been having pretty good luck using rtv on the threads of those bolts to keep the bores dry. Way less corrosion when you have to pull it apart

Ah yes.
Half of that bolt broke off on me as well.

Since said bolt is long; I just used a shorter bolt/good enough.
Been working, going on 4 years now.:grinpimp:

Yeah, I was thinking either that or packing the cavity with grease or anti-seize or something. If RTV works for you I'll give that a shot.

I always pull the timing cover to reseal when doing a water pump. I've had to go back every time I didn't and do it again anyways. I really hate (some aspects of) the Windsor Ford design, lol. (And the 385 for that matter damnit)

Edit: last time I tried to not do it, after about a year, it blew about a 2" chunk of the the gasket out around the pass side port between the timing cover and block, about 200mi away from home, towing a 5th wheel. Lucked the fuck out that some of that head gasket stop leak sealed it up enough to get home, was going through 6 gallons of water in 6 miles, and businesses won't let you just use their hoses anymore, fuckers.

Finally got the bed back on the truck and the aft fuel filler neck installed. Bought a new filler neck for the front tank but it is for a gasser. Anyone know where I can get a diesel filler neck for a 97 F250?

rockauto and LMC Truck are usually pretty dang good. who'd you get the current one from?

I bought it off ebay. I just found a fuel tank vent mod that shows how to take them apart. I am gonna try to take the old one apart and replace the internal hose with the new one. If not I found I think a diesel one on ebay.

You mentioned some where that you had them modified to fit your tires. Is that something you do yourself or is there some place you take them? And what size chains did you start with? For a 35" tire for example?

I'd like to get a set of chains for my 40x13.5's (required to have them in CA some times or they won't let you up the mountain) but haven't found any.

Went to lunch today; slid/oversteered while turning into Burger King's driveway.
Was going about 1.5MPH when I oversteered and jumped the curb (again) in the driveway.

Yeah; HMMWV tires suck in cold weather.:shaking::homer:
