What's new

Ultimate Adventure 2022

What happened to Tim Hardy and his smashed up Samurai. I didnt mind seeing that thing multiple years.
Man, that's his name. He is the reason that had my shopping for my Samurai when I bought it. :smokin:

That's the video that did it for me.

Clampy once
Tug, rubiwagon, tube sock for sure more than once.
Not sure about summer camp

I knew there was one I was missing. The jk body on the Cummins chassis.

Did the avalanche ever go more than once?

Edit: was also wondering what happened to Tim hardy.

The rules of UA used to be you had to bring a new vehicle every year. The cronies and sponsors slowly stopped doing that. Hell even Fred has gone in the same vehicle a couple of times now.

I don't ever remember that, unless it's just the vehicle the magazine built, that one had to be a new one every year. Pretty sure Tim's sammi was on 8 of the first ten adventures or something crazy like that. And ORD has been on almost all of them I think, and only had what, 4 different rigs the whole time?

Also old or rare bodies slapped on a JK chassis/drivetrain falls back in the boring category..

I see the appeal but at the end of the day it feels like a JK with a different wrapper.

I was pleased to see a UA build this year that didn't have an r2.8 cummins so im not totally cynical... 😄

I remember a rumor about someone running low on patience with the frequency of having to wait on Hardy's required mechanical repairs on the samurai but I could be wrong.

I can't recall for certain.

last day was pretty cool. so of the end comments are a bit funny, we did everything (several esposide before bypassing and lots of winching). Not withstanding still looked to be a great trip for all.

Just watched 1 1/2 ish hrs of the 5 episodes M.T. released, of ua22
aka "commercial fest" ....
For a run with a claimed 26 rigs, it was kinda thin on wheeling content.
It was pleasant to not have the sponsors rammed down your throat however.
Poor ifs rigs trying to complete (compete) was something tho.

Haha the group helping get that thing through didn't look thrilled multiple times. But blame it on trent/ Christian for allowing him to bring it in the first place.

So since this got lost in the crash i wanted to bring it back up.

I am genuinely interested, i really might submit my ride next year, but i cant say ive ever done anything quite like UA. So i wonder, for those that did get to go, what did you guys do, or didnt do, that you wish you did? Or vice-versa? Anything you packed you didnt need, or something you wish you had? I dont know whats considered 'required equipment', other than the snippet i caught in Dave's video. Im pretty sure a roll cage is required so id have to build one. I know what spare parts i usually bring, and what i think i would bring for a week-long trip but i also wonder about the whole camping aspect of it since youre moving camp every day. Any specific gear you bought, or wish you bought? Im sure i have more questions  Living in PA im used to being just an hour or two from the trailhead and it has definitely impacted my wheeling style and what i bring with me, so something like UA (or the Irate Adventure) is way different than anything ive ever done.

you would need a cage. If you do get selected for UA, you usually have 6 weeks, maybe a bit longer to get your shit together. but they didn't give the location till the trip was a couple weeks out. I went from having a truck that was sorta ready.....got the call and then made it super ready to go. Chances are, you are comfortable driving your rig off road, so to prepare, I would recommend you force yourself out of your comfort zone and go on some long road trips in your rig. That's when you may notice the areas that need improvement. Think we did 300? miles one day, so get ready for that kind of road miles.

As far as camping, I had a tent, a sleeping bag and a pillow. kept it lightweight and simple. the guys that have gone on the trip a number of times were in tent cots or hammocks, they may know something I don't.

Have to admit, after watching the coverage this year on the YouTubes, I reached out to Christian Hazel and applied for next year.

I dont expect to make it as I've made the dirty dozen twice, and they just filled their need for a maroon hybrid caged Toyota for what is likely the rest of UA's existence. But it looked like there was some life breathed back into UA this year, and as misplaced as my faith may be, it doesn't look like it's quite as sponsor focused. See what happens next year.

I only got to hang out with the UA folks 1 day last year in Texas, but best I can tell, the trip itself has always been great, but the coverage hasn't always shown that. Even this year, the videos were great, but there's no way a video can show everything or just show how good of a time it is.

300 miles in one day is a lot  Holy crap, id need to pack extra gas for a trip that long! Ive driven mine for an hour or so down back roads in the mountains in the middle of summer and it cruises along just fine. I drive it to work once a month or so just to keep it moving, but i have a shake at 65 i havent been able to find. But 300 miles! That's some serious mileage for one day! I only have a 16 gal tank; with fuel mileage in the single digits id need extra fuel or frequent stops!

You only have to make it 150 miles between gas stops. If you can do more great, but that is the minimum.

Hmm. i actually cant  16x6.5 = 104 miles/tank  :shaking: Guess at the very least id have to add a cage, and put in a bigger gas tank. I need rattle_snake to work out the bugs in the 460/6R80 conversion so i can copy him and gain some mpgs

I agree, drive your rig on the highway and make sure your comfortable doing it.

I did several 350-1000 mile road trips on 40s before applying because I knew I’d run 40s on UA.

The road days can be tougher on your rig then the trail days. On UA I saw people have issues with overheating trans, worn out suspension joints causing issues at highway speed, oil consumption issues. All those things may not be an issue on the trail but are on the highway

The TN guys and me may or may not be planning a UA style trip in VA and WV in the fall next year, have your POS actually running by then!!:flipoff2:

Levi and I were on the phone yesterday and we gave you a target date to hit the trails of the march AOP trip, didn't know when he was going to tell you, but now you know LOL!!

I've watched the first 4 episodes. The videos from 2022 made it look fun. Still too many rigs for my taste.

That Toyota with the IFS should never have been allowed on the trip. There were probably much better applicants than that rig.

I remember watching some briefly in the past, and it was stupid hot or something one year. They must have gone in July or August. FAWK that. It seems like they must have gone in late September this year? It looked cool early a few mornings based on people wearing hoodies etc, but the leaves were not quite changing yet.

The trips until a year or so ago were around 4th of July. Typically the week before or after.

The guy with the Toyota wanted to bring his crawler, but Christian the editor of 4WOR (or whatever it’s called now ) only let him come if he would take the pre-runner with IFS. It was not his choice.
