Co-defendant in Trump's Georgia election case seeks to disqualify DA, alleging romantic relationship with prosecutor

One of former president Donald Trump's co-defendants in his Georgia election interference case is seeking to dismiss the indictment against him and disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, alleging that she "engaged in a personal, romantic relationship" with one of the top prosecutors she brought in to work on the case, which allegedly resulted in financial gain for both of them.

In a court filing Monday, former Trump campaign staff member Michael Roman accuses Willis of having potentially committed "an act to defraud the public of honest services" based on her "intentional failure" to disclose to alleged relationship that she allegedly "personally benefitted from."

"Accordingly, the district attorney and the special prosecutor have violated laws regulating the use of public monies, suffer from irreparable conflicts of interest, and have violated their oaths of office under the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct and should be disqualified from prosecuting this matter," the 127-page filing from Roman's attorney, Ashleigh Merchant, said.


A spokesperson for the Fulton County DA said in a statement to ABC News that the office would "respond through appropriate court filings."

The filing alleges that, based on "discussions with individuals with knowledge," Willis and a special prosecutor she brought in to lead the case, Nathan Wade, were "romantically involved" prior to her bringing him on to the case and continued their relationship during it, and accuses Willis of bringing Wade on as a special prosecutor without getting proper government authorization to appoint him as such.

"Sources close to both the special prosecutor and the district attorney have confirmed they had an ongoing, personal relationship during the pendency of the special prosecutor's divorce proceedings," the filing says.

The filing claims that Wade had a "lack of relevant experience" but that he has been paid approximately $650,000 in legal fees since being appointed to the role -- which the filing claims was a "self-serving arrangement."


"Willis has benefitted substantially and directly, and continues to benefit, from this litigation because Wade is being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to prosecute this case on her behalf," the filing claims. "In turn, Wade is taking Willis on, and paying for vacations across the world with money he is being paid by the Fulton County taxpayers and authorized solely by Willis."

Trump seized on the allegations in the filing, writing on social media, "ALL CHARGES AGAINST ME, AND OTHERS, SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY DROPPED, WITH APOLOGIES, AND MONETARY DAMAGES FOR THE ILLEGAL AND HIGHLY POLITICAL PERSECUTION OF INNOCENT PEOPLE."

Chris Timmons, a former Georgia prosecutor who is now an ABC News contributor, said that, "After preliminary review, I don't think it puts the indictment in jeopardy -- but it might result in some disqualification of prosecutors moving forward."

Roman, Trump, and 17 others pleaded not guilty in August to all charges in a sweeping racketeering indictment for alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state of Georgia. Defendants Kenneth Chesebro, Sidney Powell, Jena Ellis and Scott Hall subsequently took plea deals in exchange for agreeing to testify against other defendants.

The former president has blasted the district attorney's investigation as being politically motivated.

Sure, the CIA could knock him off but then the NSA would out them and they'd lose some power and influence.

The .gov is a bunch of silos that are constantly in power struggle with each other. And "The System" has been free from competition for so long that it no longer has the ability to coordinate amongst itself because times have been so plentiful for them that the various parts have not really had to be practiced at coordinating with each other to pull one over on any other part.
 
The question that should be asked, then answered, then acted upon in addition to the potential graft is Why The Fuck (another WTF) is Fulton County hiring an outside DA to do anything ? If Fulton County doesn't have the staff or resources for political bullshit, they shouldn't start their shit show.

If they would have left him alone. Let him babble on street corners and look deranged, he would be nothing but a guy with a cult following capable of grabbing 10 million votes or so as a third party. J6 wasn't good optics and the news coverage should have sealed him. But then the BS J6 Committee, all the charges, video being released, etc. People saw a witch hunt for what it is/was.

They went all Banana Republic on him, showed what inept and corrupt trash they were, and ignited a passion of people to see not just Trump defeat that shit, but to have the persecutors squashed.

I think that there are similar parallels to the woke bullshit and especially the trans stuff. If they would have just been low key, they would be winning. They dedided to go "in your face" and people rejected that. Americans, for the most part, don't like to be told what to think. Yeah, you can but Covid but I really think that is a major exception to the rule.

The Left vastly overplayed their hand and they created a monster that they can't contain now. Only shot are the courts. I'd imagine he loses in NY, toss up in Florida and Georgia. Florida and Maine nonsense gets overruled by the SC 9-0 or 8-1 with Sotomayor being the one vote. She is that dumb and the most partisan.

They think they are brilliant and everyone including their voters are beneath them. They are 100% shocked that they haven't accomplished their task of destroying him. They don't want him to be a martyr they want him to be humiliated along with his supporters.

They didn't overplay their hand they simply revealed it. They are commie pigs at heart.

Yes, he's able to be described as "conservative" in some light, but what that means can not be more obvious; his platform is that of a progressive from a couple decades ago

He's not dead yet because they don't want to make him a martyr. A final verification that everything Trump has said is true.

They have to try and discredit and humiliate him first. Legal disqualification is good for the Dem base, they can stretch it out, keep the J6 " insurrection " in the news, they can all get rich investigating and investigating and paying their lovers to investigate with tax payer money ( cough Fanni Willis).

I think they are overplaying their hand and the increased popularity backfired so far. He's making huge gains with the blacks and Hispanics.

What the Dems also didn't plan well is Biden is fading so fast and is universally disliked as well as Kamala.

If they can't legally sideline him by next labor day, I think they go nuclear. But only as a last resort m they will never ever let him be president again. That's the only thing I do know for sure

The extinction burst is going to be epic, and as their desperation grows, will likely be dangerous. There will actually be an attempt to stop the election this year. That is my prediction.

How exactly and when did Trump help bail out the banks ? His net worth is far fa far less than the whatever bank crisis you are talking about. He is not in any way empowered to legislate or advance any public funds. Did he donate his life savings or what exactly ? I just dont want to be blind.
