Toterhome Build Dreams/Reality Check

Back from the dead. I'm in talks with the owner of the aforementioned toyhauler thanks ridered3

After sitting down with the wife we lined some 1-5-10 year goals out and a steel building/barndo is in the 1-5 range for our growing family (have a toddler and one cooking now), we own the dually outright, and the Dune Sport should fit both rigs and be a much better built trailer to keep for more than 3 years.

After talking with a few friends who own newer toyhaulers (2020+) and my good friend who owns an RV lot it is confirmed that all the newer brands while extremely nice are not lasting, and value is dropping 50-60% in 3 years. So not only is a new trailer a bad investment for money, its going to suck my time which is something i cant afford.

The Peterbilt is still a dream i hope to realize soon, but for now that's another project, and realistically another 20-30k once i get a trailer/flatbed built.

So onto this house on wheels.

When i moved to my current place i loaded a 71 k10, the can-am, and the ramcharger on a 40' gooseneck. there was some space in front and behind the k10 (6-18" total), i could've sucked the x3 down a bit more and drove the ramcharger over it a few more inches BUT the ramcharger was hanging off the rear.

Working backwards the k10 is 15'8" bumper to bumper, meaning i fit the can-am and rig in 25'4"+the 18-24" of overhang. The trailer has 24' from wall to wall. Thinking of some sort of ramps for the rear of the x3 so i can drive the rig farther in.

I'd just pull the two together and measure a few different ways but i currently have the front axle down to spindles waiting on caliper brackets from BKO because i got sent the wrong ones.

That thing is badass, any idea what it's going to weigh loaded? I'm guessing it's got to be pushing what 24,000 lb?

14k empty. ramcharger is 5ish, can-am is 1800ish. So there's 21 before water, fuel, food, crotch gremlins shit.

Id bet every bit of 24k.

Based on the wheel location and the depth of the garage id bet 4500+ in pin weight.

Ok not to be a party pooper but here I am:stirthepot:

It's 14k empty with 21k of axle, leaving 7k of cargo, you really think you can get under that? I don't know how the pin factors in to the toys, I am imagining the toys are not adding to pin weight but if anything they will be removing it, loading the axles pretty directly.

My buddy has a 45' voltage with a 4 seat CannedHam and he's broken springs, hangers etc. on last 2 out of 4 trips. It has a gross of 24k If I remember correctly.

Does this thing have some sort of non RV specific frame/suspension?

I tried to find some Dune Sport construction details but came up empty.

They could be 8k axles.

I'd also Imagine it's got a ton of pin wieght with no toys. Like 4k. So it's more like 11-14k of capacity?

The ad says 7k, and my gut feeling is they are using the same components lippert sells to every RV company (not great)

While I agree it's gonna have a killer pin weight the toys (ram charger) is pretty extreme over those axles or worse when behind them.

My only point was is this REALLY a better RV than a RV?

True, it's asking a lot of that type of platform.

Correct on triple 7k axles, but no clue on the components portion of the axles. If I recall correctly, they only had one issue with a trailer tire after years of use lugging around a trail bouncer (4500-5k) and a 2 seat SxS. He was pretty meticulous in pre-trip maintenance, which I am sure helped avoid issues when towing.

Having been around/in it a few times, I'd say it is built much better than a comparable, mass produced, toy hauler setup from a big name manufacturer, assuming you can find one big enough to fit all the toys. Interior walls of the Dune Sport, don't compress/push in like other toy haulers/5th wheels I've walked around in over the years.

When I originally posted I was thinking I was gonna find a bunch of videos "why dune sport is better" but when I didn't find them it kind of made me nervous.

I only bring it up because I've seen first hand what happened to brands like "work & play" that started as niche built toy haulers but where eventually hollowed out by acquisition and are now as generic as the rest.

As long as the OP is happy go for it, it's still cheaper than a Voltage/Cyclone/Seismic etc. at that size.

Just get a full on tractor trailer, set the trailer up with living quarters and plenty of room to haul stuff with tools in tow. AKA Big Rich and Shelley setup.

Makes sense all around there, especially considering the history of Work and Play.

It absolutely is, id also imagine 70% of the time its just going to have a SxS and some quads 30% it'll have the big toys.

Welcome to the conversation :flipoff2: read a few posts prior, time is the biggest asset I'm leveraging right now. Building a toter is 100% what i want to do, but current life paths don't allow for that kind of project.

Therein lies my primary concerns. Grand Design builds momentum trailers, my buddies 2016 fit and finish as well as overall construction was 10x that of the 2020 i owned. They got bought out between then and building practices were changed.

I don't think you see a ton of reviews for the same reason you don't see ATC trailer reviews. They're all custom order and pretty much everyone keeps them or sells them to the buddy that said "if you ever want to get rid of this" so there's really no used market to be reviewed. At least that's my hope :grinpimp:

There's a handful of 2019-2021 toyhauler's in the 4028 flavor (attitudes and genesis both have 28' of toy parking with 24' to the first cabinet) around CA for 10k less give or take. So basically the same floor plan but they have more camper amenities and lipstick on the pig. They also cant fit the truck due to width/payload.

It's all relative, picking your poison kind of deal.

IDK if that will help you decide 75RamRunner but I have seen that specific Dune Sport trailer in person.
I'm not at versed into the RV world as ridered3 is, but I can attest that it is the best toy hauler I've ever seen or visited. Ever.

The owners are extremely meticulous, kept it clean and well maintained.
I don't think you'd regret buying it.

Plenty of us haul that same proportional weight on 3500lb car trailer axles. I know that's not an awesome justification but if the tires are half decent, and the pin weight is in the range we all think it is, i think the axles are in the perfect spot for the truck. If you look at the side profile picture they're significantly farther back than most 46' toy haulers we see.

I'd bet a few cold ones the trucks front axle lands on the front most triple. the can-am would be backed in so the center of mass there is another 8' in front front of that axle.

It's all speculation right now. Wont know until someone is dumb enough to try it :flipoff2:

I continue to hear this from a lot of people. Granted you're all strangers on the innerwebs but the owners seem to be well known on that side of the country and respected. Reputation goes a long ways in my line of work, i tend to take that at a lot higher value than most

I read through this whole thread last night. This seems like a lot of money and work for something that I think you said would only be needed 2-3 times/year (sleeping/living setup for family and hauling the Ram + SxS). Maybe I misunderstood that part. Someone else mentioned renting cabins/houses those 2-3 times a year. That sure does seem like the cheaper and easier way to go.

Have you had it on a scale? I would've guessed its close to 6k than 5.

I like to lie to myself sometimes. She's fat pig for sure, i do need to actually scale her sooner than later its somewhere between 5-6. Hopefully......

We enjoy the trailer camping, its an environment thing that my family has done since I was little and I want to continue with my little ones. I'd be pulling a trailer anyways to get anywhere with the toys, so trying to cram a weeks worth of clothes, car seats, 4 dogs, and food in the backseat of a truck just doesn't really appeal to me. Some form of camper/class a/toy hauler was always in the cards of all the options. I got rid of a trailer to buy another trailer, not like I'm coming out all in one to buy it all

Pretty locked into the Dune Sport right now, flying out on 10/11 to drive it back, my dads going to drive my dually out there since ill be in Austin, Tx on business 10/8-10 and then me and a buddy are going to meet in New Orleans and haul that house on wheels back. I'll keep the thread updated, we have a trip to Sand Mountain planned for the following weekend so I'm going to get real familiar real fast.

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Well slight update with unsettled feelings

The Dune Sport has a true 23'8" of cargo, 7' door height and a true 102" opening

Ramcharger touching the can-am with no modifications is 26'10"

Ramcharger is 6'10" to top of cage and 96" wide.

The ad said a couple times built for a 120" WB buggy and a RZR, i thought sweet I'm 120 on the dot! Well she's got another 2 1/2' of ass behind that. :homer:

Pretty sure if I rip the tires off the front of the can-am ill be able to pull forward until the nose hits the truck front axle, which is something like 24-28" (currently the bottom of the truck bumper is touching is the top of the front plastics)

I don't see some magic happening and me finding 3' to get rid of though:shaking:. Also the RZR is a 1' shorter overall than an X3 so there's that.

The dune sport still solves my Ramcharger trips to MOAB/KOH of trying to get a wheeling rig and camping gear to the same spot

It also still solves my need for open floor plan future toys (x3 and some bikes/quads) as the family grows for sand trips.

Its also about 10-15k less than a new comparable toyhauler's of similar garage space that can only haul SxS and quads/bikes. And from everything I keep reading has a much higher build quality as far as the bones of the trailer goes (skin/axles/frame)

My mind says its still the best buy, what does irate say?

Don't force it, sometimes the universe tells you something.
