What's new

The TRACTOR thread

Rough terrain sometimes. Every summer a real estate broker I mow for seems to have at least 2-3 plots that haven't been mowed in years. Be nice to have a forestry mulcher but it's not in the cards right now. I have turned him down on a couple lots but he keeps coming back to me. Must work too cheap, 100$ per hour.
Between my stuff and his I stay pretty busy In the summer.

And put it back to work for a couple weeks. Along with the lower glass guards I'll make guards for the transmission and hydraulic filters.
Just trying to guard up the places I've had trouble with in the past.

I use this stupid little tractor a lot more than I ever imagined.

Showed it some more love yesterday. Another fluid change, did one when I got it last spring, so it wasn't actually due, but wanted to be sure it was good to go in case I need it this winter,

Actually made enough room to get it in my barn. Soon I hope to pull the hood and paint it, Then start on some lights.

Fixed my low oil pressure problem.

The line to the gauge was leaking where it connects on the block. I had slid a chunk of rubber fuel line over it to keep the plastic from running or melting through where it connects to the block so I could never see it leaking before.

And it sure doesn't have to leak much to throw the gauge off.

OK I am coming up empty on finding anything for this turbo. Ideally I would like to put new bearings it in if possible but I am not sure what numbers on teh housing are the part number..

I have searched Garret M10, 92 and 46. nothing comes up

Deere website shows part #RE53173 for new and SE50220 for rebuilt.
update to this. Been using the tractor sparingly and the turbo is leaking oil so my Ebay turbo rebuild kit didnt work. While doing some googling today I found this website that lists the turbo with a direct part cross reference..

Neighbor had a bunch of galvanized pipe that he gave me. Started building an enclosure/cage, think I got the proportions pretty good. Looking at picking up a snow blower for it. Have around $450 into everything. Tires ($200), engine ($75), magneto ($165), misc hardware.

Am I fucking dense?

My old Kubota runs well.

The oil idiot light has been on and off again as I used it last few times. I decided I'd pop a oil pressure gauge (nib) I had in my bin of stuff on the tractor. Make sure I don't blow the old girl up. Figure being a 78' wiring and sensors are probably suspect from sitting out and age.

Gathered the adapters and fittings, put in on with copper line. Mind you the tractor is full of oil, fresh oil. No reading on gauge. Its a Equis gauge I got at O'Reilly's for one of the jeeps.

Pull gauge off, bump it with air, it works. Huh, line must be clogged. Pull the line off, bump the copper line and shoot oil out. Huh.

Crank tractor up with nothing hooked to the adapter at the block, it shoots a strong stream of oil out. Well what the fuck.:homer:

What am I missing? Is the standard copper tubing for automotive gauges not a large enough diameter?

I had other things I'd coulda been doing but a simple gauge install....:shaking:

might just be that you ain't got no oil pressure
try another gauge, just screw it right into the block

does it come up any up at governed rpm?
This, or does it drop even lower at rated? Like something sucked up against the pickup screen.

Just spent some time reading on these old L series oil pressure problems over on orange tractor talks. Probably got some work ahead of me. :homer:
What does the internet say is the common problem?

Oil flow =/= oil pressure. Try some really thick oil or pull the pan and inspect the bearings.

Can't get a gauge directly screwed in on block. Port is right against the starter. I have several nib gauge sets from swap meets, probably try another tomorrow, they're in a shed about 30 minutes away. Can't get there today.

Negative, gauge doesn't move from idle up to 2k.

Gauge stays at zero even with flow through copper tubing. It only drips out the tubing though, it spurts stronger right at the sensor port with nothing attached.

Other forums say on this series, there is a camshaft plug that falls out on the front end of the cam. It was a press fit from factory. :shaking:

It usually ends up in the oil pan. Tractor will still fill the filter and build low end oil pressure, like 7psi idle, 20ish at throttle.
Way low according to specs online.

You need to tear down the front end, pop in a new plug and tack weld it. Its well within my capabilities, but I have a ton of shit going on, just don't feel like tearing it down, pulling the front axle etc. No shop here. Its getting cool, I wanted to work it every weekend not on it.

or even which engine are we talking about, lol

"it's a kubota" like you're a blonde talking about her green saturn
Its a gray market L2201DT. Not sure on year, 78 or 80.

Supposedly super close to North American L245DT. Most all stickers on mine are gone, what's left are in Japanese.

I've tried to decipher block stampings, there is stamp on the injection pump, but my internet searching hasn't given me a specific model number yet. Just that its a 3 cylinder, 25hp engine.

little bit of google says it should be a d1101 but who knows

don't go killing it with neglect, they ain't cheap engines

Well I pulled the pan as suggested. Had to pull the drive shaft which hadn't probably been off in forever. Had to drop the loader main bracket, and loader to get the shaft out.

Regardless, pulled the pan and pickup tube/screen. No sludge or sparkles in pan. But the cam plug was in it.

I need to pull a bearing cap but soon as I saw the plug I figure its probably my issue.

Again none of this is hard but I'm 50, laying in dirt, and the tractor is a cranky bitch too. It all takes forever. :shaking::homer:

So ordering some stuff from Messicks, get the pan back on hopefully this week and start on the cam plug repair.

So have you identified where that plug came from?

Didn't tear into front yet, but from other tractor forum threads, its from the front of the cam. Part number 38 in this diagram.

I'm going to get the pan back on once I get the gasket hopefully one night this week. Then dig in the front.
