What's new

The TRACTOR thread

And done with the front section. The mounts rub the hood just a little when opening and closing but not a big deal.

now please come do mine:usa:

The rear is a challenge, the roof hangs out around 14 inches with minimal mounting and bracing options.

For Anyone thinking about getting a grapple. Do it!

The ground is just starting to get dry enough to combine the small piles.

That fitting is still seeping out from that thin portion of the valve body. I used gasolia soft thread sealer. That lock tight above should seal it up?

+1 on a grapple. probably my favorite attachment for mine.

too late. Curious to see how this works anyways
they're pretty meh
stuff as many extra strands of wire in there as you can fit, otherwise it won't tighten up on the wire good
grease it all up real good too, both in the wire end and the other end because they corrode bad

Depends what bucket... but short answer is they do if you pick anything super heavy.
If you have the bolt on cutting edge you can really push them. I keep all my random shit on pallets stuffed in the corners and out of the way. Generator, cement mixer, hotsey. Ect. They work great for that or just as something larger then the bucket for brush.

How do those not bend the F out of the bucket?

They do. If you're stupid.

And I am stupid.

My 790 came with a set of bolt-on forks from the PO. I bent the shit out of my bucket doing stupid things with them. Finally smartened up and built an SSQA adapter for the loader and now have a set of real forks. Of course I've also bought other forklifts so I rarely need to use the tractor for lifting any more.

Failure mode on the flail mower. Cast hammers have a way of breaking like this after a lot of thrashing. Can instantly tell when one lets go it starts shaking. Hammer on the right is forged.

?
Its still cheap.to replace?

Well my luck finally ran out treating my compact tractor like a dozer last weekend.

a tree root kicked up and snapped off the primary hydraulic housing ( very similar to a thermostat housing cast out of pot metal) and the ground is very well lubricated with several gallons of hydraulic fluid:

Fortunately it's available but the price point doesnt feel great:

walmart fluid actually meets the deere spec at 50% off the price point of deere Hy-gard fluid:

from the deere service manual:

so with that, I'll get out of this fiasco for under $300 with an unplanned hydraulic fluid and filter service and a week's downtime. ( I despise my local deere dealer franchise so i ordered parts on ebay for a few bucks more that their online part price just to avoid giving them my business, and that likely cost me a day or 2)

so what i need to do is stop abusing this thing, and i'll definitely be taking it a little easier on the old girl until this memory and the dent in my wallet fades. but what I'd probably be wise to do is build a belly pan skid plate in the meantime.

while waiting for parts this week i've been slicing trees by hand like a peasant.

My take on the bolt on pallet fork. The biggest downfall is adjusting the width between the forks. I had to add a second set of brackets to bolt the forks too for different spacing on some pallets I have.

Tractor supply has the universal stuff for $49 right now
Generally, the cheap stuff doesn't meet the J20-c Deere spec as far as I can tell. The supertech was the lowest price/gal that I could locate which clearly had the spec. in a hydrostatic tractor with under 500 hrs, I'm not ready to throw that spec out of consideration.

edit, upon zooming in on the label, their premium fluid does appear to have the spec and is $1 cheaper a bucket, but the 2 gal is $2 more, so wally world won by a dollar on my 7 gal capacity:

You want J20D in a compact tractor.

i have been unfortunately rough with my 5ft shredder, Ive balled up approx 50-75 ft of old trash barbed wire several times in areas that I thought the wire had been pulled up...about an hour with side dikes each time to clear everything out and go somewhere else to cut. i have the post driller on right now and have been working on the shredder in the meantime. I swapped in the correct pins for the 3 point lift arms so it doesnt flop around as it did , now the box blade needs the same mod...fortunately I found a pair in the shop that had been purchased brand new and were never used. I need to stop losing lynch pins or start buying by the dozen...

i see these 4 and 5 ft shredders on FB marketplace for as little as $100 regularly. heck, I saw a pallet of 5 for $250 a couple weeks ago...my next shredder purchase will be a 6ft on 3pt mount.

Deere didn't do a good job stating that low viscosity hygard spec is J20D. The thicker J20C takes more HP to operate the tractor over J20D. Yes both could be used.

Ok thanks for clearing that up, that info sent me down a rabbit-hole searching for a cost effective j20d, which doesn’t exist in less than 55gal drum quantities; anything with the j20d spec is more expensive than the OEM Deere fluid.

After sorting through a bunch of fudd/ boomer postings on oil and tractor forums. There was ultimately compelling evidence to skip the cheapest of the cheap j20c fluids supertech( Warren lube king rebadged) and traveller because they’re inferior additive packages etc.

So I found that mobile delvac has the lowest viscosity of the ‘meets or exceeds’ j20c options that’s still appreciably cheaper than Deere ( 50% less if I remember to submit rebate claims :homer:).

If I didn’t hate my local Deere dealer with a passion that would probably have tilted the scales toot; shipping made the OEM fluid even more pricey.
