The 2024 Firewood Thread

if they fought...

3 ton fir log vs Stihl MS170....

and the winner is.....
the log

MS170 log.jpg

was cutting branches and brush to work around the log.
30" diameter x 30ft long section
saw was running and the log slowly rolled onto it mashing it into the ground.
died on contact.
cut a 32" section of the log out with my other saw so I could take the corpse home.
got it out and it fired right up. just need a new chain brake handle and saw handle and she will be fine.

3 of the 6 logs I am working on to bring home this week.
counted just over 200 cuts made

My small saw is a ms170 also. Tough little guy. Has cut all my firewood for 10 years going - before i got a big saw.

I use it all over the yard and for limbing all the trees.
I really was afraid I killed it and was mad because I cannot buy it any longer in California. :shaking:

having my daughter pick one up for me in Boise this month so I have a spare.

imagine a world where you have such a crazy state that instead of bootlegging alcohol, guns, drugs, etc.....you gotta bootleg chainsaws....

oh yeh, we have california...:lmao::mad3:

I still can't upload the pics from the Amish logs I bought, maybe someday
Anyway, a logger that I know called me Thursday and I met him at the landing, he said I can have all the blocks I want, nice Oak!
I couldn't do any of this without my trusty L2501 and grapple :)
First load today from the landing, about 4 miles from my house, right beside the road in a field :)
I didn't get a pic of the second load as it was pouring down rain at the time. I'm planning on going back tomorrow for more.

it is back together and idling fine right now.

if at first you don't succeed...try try again.

ran a few tanks through it and it got worse and worse.
would spin freely then almost lock up.
took the cylinder off and the crank would spin easily a few turns then stop.
took the case apart and one of the bearings was shot.
the cage that holds the balls was gone.
crank and case are fine.

bearing.jpg

got new bearing and seals last week.
don't have the correct tools to put them on the crank or in the case as they are a press fit.

put the crank in the freezer and heat the bearing and drop it on. then crank and bearing into the freezer and heat the case and it drops right in.

all back together and running again.
will take it out tomorrow after I have run a tank through it again on some small logs in the yard.

Had some free time to work in the wood yard on splitting firewood. Will be put in totes and stored for winter of 25 or 26. Still need a couple more days to finish the pile of mixed wood, and the separate 3 cord pile of red oak.
Had a basswood tree lose its top in a storm so that was separated and split for kindling.

The scale lady at the dump wasn't too happy when some branches wacked her in the face as I pulled away 🤣

Next round went in my burn dumpster.

Holy shit potato internet tonight. Took 15 mins to load those 2 pics.

Speaking of splitters, are any of the box store ones worth a fuck? Trying to stay under $2k. I hand split most everything but I've got a tree worth of Hemlock to get through and that stuff just laughs at hand tools, might as well be hitting it with a hammer.

I’d say most are fine.. especially if it’s just wood for yourself.

I’ve run my TSC splitter pretty heavy for awhile now.. needs a lil TLC once in awhile, but still kicking. I’m dabbling with the idea of selling some wood and a better splitter will be part of that program if I decide it’s worth the trouble.

Looks actually thought out. Large rod = fast return.

It have a pilot operated bypass valve so the return oil doesn't go through the hand valve?
my plan is to add an auto cycle valve, a dump valve and a second filter on the return. I did switch to a 28gpm pump right off the bat. There's tons of customizing info on these Ruggedmade splitters, and tons of info on the fagbook page.

Loading up the KB-8 with some hardwood to haul up to my parents. They burn a bit over 3 cords a winter and have a 3 shed system so it dries 2 years before burning. Basically no creosote in the chimney when I clean it in the spring.

More pics of that truck please.

It was a scrapyard rescue. Used to be a tanker for a fire department, still has a big driveline PTO box to run a pump. It leaks oil like a sieve and sticks up under the bed but I'd have to redo the driveshafts to eliminate it. It's an odd spec with a Red 450. Big alternator with a selenium rectifier.

Engine was seized solid when I got it. Filled the cyls with tranny fluid and let it sit a couple weeks. Had to hole saw an access port into the bellhousing to get a prybar square on the ring gear teeth to crack it loose. Dropped the pan and scraped the sludge off the bottom. Flushed the trans with diesel and scooped the grease out of the rear diff. I think it probably hadn't run in 40 years so the lubricants had all gone through state changes. It runs pretty good. I haven't fixed the brakes yet, it's a hydra-vac and the master is seized solid.

The plan is to make the 14' flatbed I put on it dump.

One hitched the majority of this winters wood this afternoon. standing dead large White Ash and snapped off mostly dead Beech.

Jack is a little loaded up and slobbering from idling too long waiting on me in the second video.

Spent a couple hours this morning bucking up some poplar for shoulder season wood. I dropped 9 poplar trees in the front yard that were at the point of starting to die. Didn’t want them to fall and hit our really old apple tree. Didn’t want to waste the wood, so anything bigger than 8” dia got cut for firewood, and smaller than 8” went through the chipper.
