What's new
  • Forums will go offline Wednesday Dec 4th at 5PM CST for updates. It's a big update, so the site may be offline for a bit.

Spin off: fastest you have ever been in a car on public roadways.

130 in my old 68 GTO back in the early 70's. Got a Mazda Rx3 up to 125 and the front wheels started to leave the ground so that was fast enough.

130 in a 77 280z with a turbo motor in it from a newer z. popped over a hill in alabama on I59 and saw the top of a police car in the median. all in the brakes, he clocked me at 80. made me sit in his car while he ran my license. I miss that car it was alot of fun.

On dirt, 115 mph or so. Rear end of the rally car got a little “floaty” at that speed, so was more interested in the avoidance of trees and rocks than looking at the speedo.

On pavement, bouncing off the rev limiter in a rented BMW 530d @ sustained 155 mph. Had a couple of hours to kill between customer meetings and the flughafen, was the fastest round-trip between Munich and Garmisch I’ve ever done. A bit of a white- knuckle ride, as it was Winter(ish), and the Autobahn was a bit wet in places. Wish I would have taken some camera footage of that one…..

155 riding the governor on a 2004 e55, could have pulled to redline easy because the engine was nowhere close to being done, but air suspension sucks so its probably wise to keep the 155 limiter.

My 87 E30 BMW 325i MTechnic ran out of gear at 155 mph. I ran on the limiter numerous times on the autobahn.:flipoff2:

Honorable mentions: 125 in a Ford Ka. 115 in an 87 4Runner with a 3" lift on 31" A/Ts (engnbldr 270/430 cam, ported head and intake, exhaust work, EGR delete)

Holy shit

I had been on a wheeling trip about an hour away, tornado sirens going off and radio described it close to home. Couldn't reach my wife. It was freaky, nobody on the highways at all for 10+ miles. Saw a few mobilized fire departments responding. Tornado missed our home by 100s of feet, went directly over the house and landed in the next block, the wife and kids were in the basement. Not exact on the speed, estimated based on RPM, the 85 MPH speedo was beyond pegged.

And I almost forgot, been at a 150+ a foot off the highway in a helicopter. Does that count?
OP never said anything about helicopters. :homer:

I hit 106 in Baja trying to beat the race car to the next pit. I was driving a one ton Dodge 6.7 with a trailer on.
Thats funny!

Fucking gnarly. You win.

120 in a 94 LS400 Lexus on a farm area backroad pissing rain.

120 in a 400 whp 05 STI. Crashed that car after 3 months of ownership.

Guess 120 is where my limiter is/was. I'd love to hit 200 some day though. :homer:

/Thread

Please dont tell me a Ratchet rear locker too:cool2:?

A lot of "slow" numbers in this thread. Kind of surprising for a bunch of gear heads. I've owned multiple bikes that I've stuck the speedo down, I know this thread isnt about bikes, but 160+ on a bike is something else.

First big number was in my bil fox body. It was a big motor build with a blower. Watched from the passenger seat one night (possibly fleeing and eluding) it buried the motorsport speedo at 165 and was still pulling. there may be 3 back seat witnesses.

2nd big number was also with my dumbass bil in his zr1. late night post wedding party run home. I saw 171 on the dash. About 145ish the windows "sucked" out and it got noisy in the car.

Last really big number was in a c6 z06 I had here on the lot. It had heads, cam and a blower. It put 711 to the rear tires. The rider I had with me that day said he saw 177. I didnt see it, I was trying to keep it between the lines. I had no more courage to go any faster in that car. It had a lot left. Fastest car I've ever been in hands down.

I run in the mid 100s just about every time I get my shop truck out. Very easy to put the 120 speedo down on the bottom and keep pulling. It'll run high 140s easy and comfortably.

Reading my own post, I should slow down some. :lmao:
