What's new

Sonya Massey shooting

After seeing the first part, I can only guess the reason they wanted to enter is because the 911 call was about a potential intruder.
After they got there, it took her a long time to respond to their knocks. After she responded, it took even longer for her to open the door.
Once she made contact, she was acting sketchy and kept saying she needs help. With what? "Nothing".
After the cops enter the house, they appear to be checking to see if anyone else is in there.

Based on all that, I suspect it might be standard for cops to want to enter a house to make sure the caller isn't being held hostage or threatened by a potential intruder.

Other than that, the lack of humanity by some cops is unreal.

She doesn't try to throw the water, she's trying to set the pot down when they go nuts and start shooting at her. She comes back up with the pot and tries to set it down again when they end up killing her. Can't blame her for not just dropping boiling water all over herself while she's getting shot at.
Disagree. Go watch the YouTube video posted with the shooter cop's body cam. She drops down behind the counter and when he comes around she pops up and throws the water at him. You can tell she threw it outward because the chair inbetween she and the cop who shot her was still steaming from water being thrown on it.

That's not to say i condone the cop's actions- it should have never come to that and lethal force never should have been used even if it did, but there was also some crazy going on there on Sonya's part.

Just guessing here, but I think it's really common for someone to call the cops and when the cops show up at their door, they invite the cops in and the cops usually enter to discuss the situation inside rather than outside with busy bodies and such.
Nope. Any time the police have been to my house, we talk outside. I know enough about the law not to freely bring someone in who would normally have to get a warrant to do so... And I'm someone half of you here would call a 'bootlicker' because I don't automatically hate all LEOs

I wonder.

A pot of boiling water = great bodily harm potential?
If so, consider this thread if a random bum tried to toss boiling water onto a guy with a CCW.
Justified?

Not my place to make that call. The mic is in the hands of someone like Bonanza.

(I am not lawyering up for the cop, but simply micro-examining the lone aspect of whether or not it would be legally justified to use deadly force to defend against boiling water.)

Sure, I get it and I agree.

But if you called them specifically because of potential intruder and they wanted to make sure nobody bad is in your house holding you hostage or threatening you, you would still not let them in?

Every cop in a 100 mile radius shows up and then they stand around with their thumbs up their asses.

I'm not seeing where she "threw" anything. I think the steam some are seeing is from dropping the pot when she ducked after they drew on her.

If they were that worried about her, they shouldn't have allowed her to get that close to them as she went to take the water off the stove.

Why even have her go turn it off. Why not just go flip the burner off yourself if you're that worried about it.

Cop was large dude, armed and trained with protective gear on, she is small and old. Fair fight then!

watch the shooter's body cam.

First she leaves the pot on the counter and ducks down with oven mits on her hands

Here she's all the way down behind the counter but the pot remains:

Then when he comes around the counter she grabs the pot, jumps up and throws it at him

Right afterward, you can see the steaming water where he was standing:

You can see it all happen from 28:06 - 28:12 on this video:

I still can’t see this crossing my threshold of when I’d use deadly force, but I have to think about the consequences of if o were to shoot her as I don’t have qualified immunity

Yeah, shouldn't have moved in on her in the first place. Definitely shouldn't have provoked her by telling her he would "shoot her in the fucking face." Shoot, everything was all good until he sent her to shut off the stove.

Devil's advocate:

If I was a police officer and ran into the scenario: Lady calls 911 because she thought someone was creeping around her place, cops show up, and lady is acting strange and unhelpful when they get there. I would wonder if maybe someone had gotten into her house and was threatening her or her family with violence if she told the cops about them, so I would try to come up with some sort of "excuse" to get into her house and make sure there's nothing bad going on inside. You can see the officer who didn't shoot her peeking into other rooms when they first get in to check.

It's also possible if they had never had any contact with her that is also why they asked to see her ID- just in case she wasn't the creeper and the real Sonya wasn't tied up inside.

The way the shooter reacted to her when she dropped jesus on him, however, makes me think he knew her and had dealt with her before. If so, there was no good reason to make her pull her ID out after they were sure there wasn't some psycho killer in her house.

I only saw the pics, not the vid from his bodycam.

I see it now. But maybe she was defending herself since this dumbass drew down on her for no reason.

Everything was fine, she says stupid shit about rebuking him in the name of Jesus and he loses his shit and pulls his gun...at that point she hadn't done anything to appear aggressive.

I said it earlier and don't know if it's true, her daughter said she was schizo. And the cops were there frequently.

Actually, now that I think about it, the shooter told the sergeant she was 10-96 (mentally ill) so he did know her and her background. Didn't think about that until just now.

Hang him.

That part was strange to me too. Either the officer is just as crazy as she is,.or there were some other subtle cues that she was about to get violent that the camera didn't pick up. It would be interesting to hear the second officer's take how it all started.

...or the officer that shot her was a demon.

At what point do any actions you take become self defense after someone says they're going to shoot you in the fucking face?

For no reason...I mean she followed their directions, did what they asked her to do.

Perfectly normal response once someone has been rebuked in the name of Jesus. :flipoff2:

But yeah, I agree there. I think a normal person would have just put their hands up and complied(I know that's what I'd do if an officer pointed a gun at me), but I would imagine a crazy person's stress response would be a lot different than a normal person and it's on the officer to know that.

Not even that, from the screenshots she "threw" the water after she was shot at for no reason.
Go back and watch the video shooter's camera. He shot her when she grabbed the pot and tried to throw it on him. It'll only take about 10 seconds of your time. Maybe 20 if you watch it twice.

Just rewatched it at 1/4 speed. Shooter has his hand on his gun while she's picking the pot up, he shoots before her arms ever come up, she pulls the pot up slightly higher as if she's shielding herself with it while she's ducking. Shooter is already shooting at this point, his partner doesn't get his gun out until she's already ducking behind the counter. Shooter then steps directly in front of his partners gun, even making contact with it, to get around the side of the counter to keep shooting. You can't see her at this point, only some of the water and steam come out from behind the cabinet. You can't see her so you can't tell whether she threw it, fumbled it, knocked it over, etc. Either way if you watch from 14:01 to 14:07, the shoot pulls his gun and shoots her while she's setting it down. At no point while he's drawing and shooting at her is she even holding the pot.
