What's new

Sonya Massey shooting

Apparently I don't.

What I'm really trying to figure out was why was the cop nervous about her boiling water from the get go. He obviously wasn't worried about it when he asked her to take it off the stove, so.. what changed enough to make him feel like he needed to move away from her and her boiling water at first? She give off crazy vibes we can't see on the camera?

Exactly...he screwed up. Big time. He or the other guy should have just walked over there and turned it off.

It went from laughing with her to shooting her in the face in very little time which makes no sense.

Maybe he's 10-96.

I think he made a bad tactical decision when he asked her to remove it. He may not have realized it was "boiling" until she walked over to it and started to take it off of the stove. Either way, he put a weapon (both the pot and the water) in her hand by asking her to remove it. Cops are trained to "watch the hands" because that is what can kill you (guns, knives, bats etc) Rarely does someone get kicked to death. Once she had the pot in her hand, the water wasn't the only threat. He realized it too late and instead of backing out or creating distance, he overreacted. I will say in this case he created the emergency and put himself in a situation where his brain was thinking lethal force was his only option. I understand those that say "but she had a weapon", but my response is she had a weapon because he asked her to grab the weapon. That kinda logic doesn't fly with me. If she meets him at the door with the pot over her head and swinging he gets a bit more sympathy from me.

I'm the only one who brought it up.

Just seemed odd to me that:
1. She was doing it despite that it was 1 am and she appeared in a robe and seeming like she just woke up at the beginning of the video
2. Somehow the officer thought it was a threat- both as just a regular ol boiling pot of water on the stove, and later as some sort of weapon when it was he who asked her to go take it off the stove.
If he thought it was a weapon and was worried about her using it he would have asked her to increase the distance between her and it, not the opposite. This is like super low level day 1 at the academy shit.

So either he wasn't worried about it or had something more in mind...

Shit, when we used to salt a few Meijer stores (similar to WallyWorld) people would be dragging their 2-3 YO kids into the store at 11 PM or later.
Little shit wants to say it can't go to sleep because it's sick the little shit can get dragged to Walmart to get cough syrup.

Desirable
Practical
This would get humorous when "tactical gear" gets the name changed.

That word is used way to often, while discussing cops. Part of the problem IMO
I kinda think tactics should be involved anytime someone is dealing with a situation where they may get hurt. Every decision anyone makes is ultimately tactical. What lane you drive in, where you walk, who your friends are, where you spend your money, so you don't go broke etc. Each of those decisions is tactical for the best outcome. Even building your rig. You don't just throw parts at it because you desire to or buy the practical parts and hope for the best. You research and plan the build to get the most out of your truck.

How do you have a "desirable" decision? Desirable is like hope. It does no good without solid (tactical) decision making. I think practical decision making requires both parties to want the same outcome. If you are dealing with someone who is not thinking clearly, someone has to be the one to come up with a plan (tactics) to get to a point of solution. In that process you need to have multiple plans (again tactics) in case something goes sideways.

Tactical (from the Oxford Dictionary)
2nd Definition: (of a person or their actions) showing adroit planning; aiming at an end beyond the immediate action

Tactical (form the Websters Dictionary)
2nd Defiition:
a
: of or relating to tactics: such as
(1)
: of or relating to small-scale actions serving a larger purpose
(2)
: made or carried out with only a limited or immediate end in view
b
: adroit in planning or maneuvering to accomplish a purpose

Many times, it is related to law enforcement or military, but in reality, it is something everyone does every day.

what word would you replace it with?
There is no better word. Tactical has a very specific meaning. The problem is knuckle dragging "field" guys trying to use it for all sorts of other meanings too.

In this case "tactical" absolutely is the right word for what the police were doing or not doing.

It's generally a shit adjective for anything that doesn't involve human "action" though. There is nothing tactical about a bullet proof vest or any other piece of gear.

Which one asked her to remove it from the stove, shooter or non-shooter? I thought I had heard her mention it as she walked over.
It was the non-shooter that moved away from the end of the peninsula when she went to the stove, correct?

I thought it was shooter that told her to do it, then moved away from her and she asked him where he was going, at which point he said something along the lines of "away from your hot steaming water".

The very first time I watched the video I thought that cop was crazy- why react like that when everything seemed pretty relaxed prior?

I'm sticking with my thinking that he was either crazy himself or she some started giving off some weird signals we can't see on camera when she went over there.
