I swear the Matco ratchets are built by Apex (gearwrench). They look and feel very similar…TBH I don't own any 80s from them. I have Matco 88s and absolutely love them. The head is thinner and smaller than anything else I own.
I put a Gearwench head in my 3/8's 88 before, it works kinda but it's not the same. The Gearwrench fine tooth I have is like a Matco 88 if ordered off wish Giant head, flexy handle, breaks frequently. I honestly hardly use it cause it's not reliable and the head is huge in comparison.I swear the Matco ratchets are built by Apex (gearwrench). They look and feel very similar…
I like them until they break the pawl. My 1/2 Matco has about the same size pawl as my 1/4 SO
Have these in snappy flavor. Anyone who hasnt used them is in for a real treat. I wont go anywhere I might run into a wire without them. Those are the shit, I’ve only ever bought them on sale/clearance of odd colors though.
Carlyle(NAPA) has an almost identical tool.
On monthly special for $25
Have you have hood luck with any? I've long since considered them to be expendable. Only one that haven't been a issue for me are my giant ones with hardened replaceable tips. Smaller ones all break or bend eventually.
I like snap on fine tooth ratchets but I own several sets of gearwrench ratchets and love to use them if not more than the snap on ones.Snap on is still the best but you can get serviceable tools from Sunex, knipex, cobalt, etc. I suggest that people that can afford it get snapon ratchets, screwdrivers and combination wrenches. My Sunex impact sockets have held up as well as snapon, for example.
There are a lot of snapon specialty tools that will save time, money and fingers too.
YepI'd agree with this, basically. If you are a dabbler, or starting out and not getting the whatever percent off for being a student, go get the best you can afford. If you are going to make it your life's work, start trading it for the best. The best isn't always tool truck, but for your most-used tools you can bet that SO or Matco (not sure I'd put MAC in that basket these days) is an easy way to get shit that lasts.
I'd still say that...
-Grey Pneumatic should be where you get impact sockets, they are 90% as good as tool truck for 1/4 the price.
-Knipex for most pliers/cutters are 90-110% tool truck at 1/3-1/2 the price.
-The Gearwrench ratcheting wrenches are good enough for the intended use at 1/4-1/8th the price (though they aren't what they used to be.
-Milwaukee/DeWalt/Makita is as good or better than the tool truck cordless stuff at 1/2-1/4 of the price.
-Lisle corp./OTC is good enough for most "specialty tools" (especially since they build many of the tool truck's specialty tools)
-None of the tool truck OBD tools are the end-all, be-all tool that will solve all your problems (no matter what the rep tells you) and Autel/Launch/others sell plenty good stuff.
I'd also say that most of the APEX or Tekton stuff is good enough to get you started in the business, and good enough for most people's hobbies.
The tool trucks may be pricey, but I also can't say that they are "overpriced" considering they are basically the only ones keeping American tool manufacturing afloat and (if your franchisee isn't a complete asshole) will allow you to own your tools forever via warranty.
Didn't know those existed. Now I have to buy another tool
I imagine it’s tough collecting money from people who have truck accounts eh?I used to be a rapist, i mean snapon dealer…. Luckily i was a second franchise for another dealer. Worst job i ever had.
I beg to differ. These new needle nose pliers are the bomb. Pick up change flat off the floor by the rim of the coin, or you can do chin ups with just the tips.Their pliers suck, I use channelock or knipex
Guess I’m spending about $100 CAD on a set of pliers 😂Have these in snappy flavor. Anyone who hasnt used them is in for a real treat. I wont go anywhere I might run into a wire without them.
They really beat a set of traditional crimpers. Having the crimp on the front makes it real easy to get in and crimp in tighter spots with them when available wire is limited. A god send when running wiring in a boat and under dashes. If I could only keep a handful of snappy tools these would be top of the list for sure.Guess I’m spending about $100 CAD on a set of pliers 😂
I’ve gave away basically all my others. I still have the flat plate Blue Points, mostly for my kids to use when fucking around in the shopThey really beat a set of traditional crimpers. Get 'er doneSo Napa/Carlyle stuff is 20% off today if you spend $125 and ship it to your house. Someone tell me I don't need wrenches
That is the other side of this, most of us have our fathers Snap on tools and they still work great, speaks volumes.Vintage strap-on you say? I have 2 in 1/4" flavor and 2 in 3/8". Somewhere I have a pair of them I. 1/2" as well but I'm not sure where they ran off to in the last few years.
Story I got was Vietnam era sold as-is no warranty to uncle sam. The only 2 that don't skip are the 1/4" that I use on RC shit.

every transaction mediated in dollars has a little percentage of rape includedBtw, calling a voluntary transaction “rapey” is snowflake/renter talk.

of course, just look at how happy people are to be getting some small percentage back of what was taken from themIf you throw the victim a $20, would that knock the percentage down?
Did you miss the part where is said 4 out of 6 ratchets are junk that I only keep around because I haven't turned them into shifter handles yet? That is the other side of this, most of us have our fathers Snap on tools and they still work great, speaks volumes.
Last shop had a big set of Mac's. They held up great.
I've got a couple pairs of reversible ones from Matco right now. They hold up better than those knipex did, but are a solid meh I dont reuse snaprings much, so anymore if anything is being stubborn, I hit it with fire
Pretty sure these are the big ones I have that held up well. I wish the smaller ones held up as well.
