What's new

Pick an engine, 66 Fairlane edition

Doesn’t look like much progress but a lot of mock up and measuring to locate the upper strut mounts. The camber plates sit at a compound angle which is a challenge. Think I’ve got it to where I can start running tubes through the firewall

Unless I get something dropped in my lap, if it gets a mod motor I'll bite the bullet and go for a gen 1 or gen 2 coyote out of a f150 and put a t45 or tr3650 behind it.

Coyote is the direction I'm leaning right now. Even though I love turbos it would be plenty of fun NA for the time being, and that would offset some of the cost.
Stop fawkin around and go buy the damn thing. Write down what you get for heads and rotating assembly and it will make sense. Take outs are the new crate engines. It's the small details that will make it unique , not the engine swap.

Plenty of work to do still before I'm ready for an engine. It'll just be in my way until this thing is a roller.

No, they're not. A buick straight 8 would be cool & retro. A ho-hum economy motor who's only selling point was reliability will never be cool. So what if you turbo it, It's just a turbo strapped to a turd. You want people to be interested & impressed when you pop the hood, not mildly amused and wondering why you bothered.

Can you be a bigger douche? Its not always about the most fire breathing thing you can do. An inline 6 would have been an option in this car. Its like an old charger with a slant 6. Its never gonna be a hemi, but its different, and often, different is cool. That slant 6 charger will draw a bigger crowd at a car show than any big block car because of it. OP never said he wanted the biggest fastest thing out there.

Got a tube punched through the firewall. Need to come up with a good way to hang the camber plate off it. It’s going to be awkward with the compound angle. Probably do a vertical tube on the firewall side like I have mocked up

In what world is a 220hp v6 out of a Taurus "the most fire breathing thing"? It's cool to look at because it has a nest of snakes intake on top. And it's a rare swap so it would definitely be different. Same thing with the v10, 310hp isn't earth shattering, but the sound would be different than anything else and again, not a common swap.

Only a douche would advocate for putting a pathetic 300 six in an otherwise cool car. Any work that goes into hotrodding a 300 would give half again more of a return if put into a better engine. If you love an inline, build a GM 4200. A turbo on that is going to make 200hp more than the same setup on a 300, and weigh hundreds of lbs less.

GMC big-cube V6
the 305 and 428 cubic inch one

they aren't good engines, but they are something neat that you barely ever see any more
Those are on my short list of cool old engineering dead ends I want to own along with a 60s wedge head Ford and 50s Chrysler Hy-drive.

Had a buddy in high school with an early '60s GMC with one. He put flowmasters on it and it sounded weirdly good

Those and a 4-53 or 6v53 are something that I always wanted to put in something. This isn't it. Maybe this things crusty 1 ton big brother, but not this

if you like I6 configuration, and like to push boost till you get the power number you are after, why not import a Barra from Australia? Keeps it ford powered too.

yeah kinda figured it wasn't right for it
what with the cage and all lol

This rusty old thing isn’t worth all that work. I do like the I6 though. Just don’t want something too obscure to find parts

that's aluminum heads on a 460 kinda money
or procharger on an iron headed 460 kinda money
I’ve got one that’s got an f250 rusting apart around it. Considered liberating it but the truck is way too useful still.

no shit? they were just 500 bucks with a C6 and a 205 like a couple years ago
Yup. All 1k now for just the engine as a runner at least around here. Can get a rusted out needs work yard truck with one for that.

Not sure why.

Just slap the 460 in it and enjoy the many much horsetorques.:flipoff2: Don't let the cheap skate twats talk you out of it. 5k ain't sheeeit these days and will net many much smiles per gallon.

Just looked on FBMP, there are 2 460 big block trucks running and driving 4x4 auto trans for sub 2K. One was a $1300 unit!

Absolutely, Kansas City area. Not Ohio rust, but not South OK either.

Owned a missouri since new XJ once.
that's an accurate assessment. Was "rust free" to me. I mean, two holes in the quarters under the bumper caps? lol. I drive shit with nothing but carpet between me and the pavement.

Adam LZ on YouTube put one in a modern gt350 and finally got it running right. It a ripper. 9s with a sequential 6 speed. Car he got had an engine fire.
