Pick an engine, 66 Fairlane edition

$3500 for powertrain combo, and then get to deal with tranny problems, no free lunch:homer:

The turbo ls is the proven 3k 500hp option but he doesn't want it. The last sbf was the most improved, and is a sweet swap into old Fords. It's cheap, like way cheap and reliable 300hp and 20mpg. China turbo and reasonable tranny work to 500hp, then you gotta pay to play

I really like the hemi, but I really hate all their transmissions. Maybe if you could 4l80 it inexpensively, but I doubt it's inexpensive to do.

Everyone thinks they need 1k hp now a days.

I'm at about 550 now in theory in the above mentioned explorer 5.0 and it's fucking stupid. Without some real thinking while driving, it is stupid easy to get in trouble.
This! But that really stems from the OEM's. It has always been an unwritten rule to have more power than any oem configuration.
Troof be told Street cars need just enough power to break the tires loose at 3/4 throttle. It will give you the big chest because you still have to respect it and have restraint, Yet there is enough to FAFO for a smoke show. Dual purpose cars, another story.

I can honestly say that without some major chassis work I don't want more powa in my setup.
X2 most people don’t realize what 500-550hp will do . My last car was just over 500hp and could be downright dangerous for an inexperienced driver with any sort of moisture on the road and we’re not even talking rain lol … the slightest amount means you go to pass someone like you normally would and do a standing burnout lol

If you want cheap and not an SBF throw rods and a turbo at a 2v 4.6 and add boost till it's fast enough. Engines are dime a dozen and once the rotating assembly is up to it they can make good power, stock rods tend to leave the chat around 400hp. If it fits in a Fox/SN95 it'll fit in a Fairlane.

If it were mine it would get something 302 based, good heads (AFR) are pretty fucking cheap and it's something native to the platform so there's parts that fit it readily available. Me personally I enjoy carburetors but there's no shortage of EFI options for the SBF if that's what you want.

yup
moving enough fuel and air for 500 in the rusted out foxbody LTD and it is absolutely terrifying
that chassis does most of the steering for you, and it doesn't want to stay on the road when it is doing the driving

Th400 and a gear vendors overdrive :grinpimp:

I'm surprised a ford CAMMER hasn't been mentioned yet.....hah

What about a Barra inline 6 from aussieland?

Whatever you choose, a tear drop hood is a must!

Better than any GM engine

Hold up. Is a Dodge V10 out of the question? I dont know how different the truck engines are vs the Viper, but I bet its not crazy to build a truck engine to Viper specs.

The barra bit of this. Are they available easily over there yet?

I've got a K member and SN95 front suspension/brakes/etc for it. Already started chassis work on it with subframe connectors and whatnot

Talk me out of a mod motor though. They are plentiful and aside from the size why not?
.

They're not bad motors once you delete the cam phasers and do timing chains as preventative maintenance :flipoff2:

The easiest, longest lasting, and cheapest to own is the LS. So do a small block Ford. :flipoff2:

I don’t have a horsepower goal. I know what 800 wheel feels like and that’s unnecessary for this thing right now

It’ll never see a dyno. I’m going to hack my way through street tuning it so there will be power left on the table. 400 to the tire would be just fine

300 I6 with a snail.
I just can’t get over the terrible non cross flow head

2JZ with manual trans and turbo
I need to research that, but I’m more into the atlas if I go inline 6
The one that makes the most sense is to buy a 95-01 explorer or mountaineer with 5.0 4r70w and 31spl 8.8 disc for the rear

Gt40 intake and heads, gtp 98 and up.

You buy the whole thing for like $700 then add boost as needed. The factory cam and "headers" leave a lot to be desired, but it's the fastest cheapest way to get to 300hp and lockup overdrive.

Not nearly as wild as the rest of the stuff out there, but turn key and go
if I get impatient when it’s time for an engine this may happen.

And about the V10 idea. Yup I’m intrigued. Take outs seem expensive though. I don’t want to put myself through a miserable build and ownership just to be different. A fairlane isn’t a big car like some of you think, it’s basically a boxy mustang.

They are actually very good motors. The issues with any 'real' Jags were Lucas electrical and electronics, and dumb-ass long-way-around-the-block Englishman design of peripheral components.
And if you have a fuckhuge engine bay and are willing to put up with that shit there's no reason not to go V12.

or an EFI 300 with a 240 head and some kinda junkyard turbo, E-85 because high compression plus boost means you're gonna be pulling a lot of timing regardless
240 head gains you nothing over the EFI head other than easier to port and easier to add big valves. Compression ratio is exactly the same. Ports are the same.

Since it's not 1993 anymore the "right" answer is to slap a snail on it.

That's not how it works anymore old man. A runner is $1500+ these days thanks in no small part to people like you who spent years swindling people out of running vehicles and then selling one door card before scrapping the rest for a cool $100 profit.

Seems to go pretty good

Only one mod motor variety has those and it's probably not the one he'd pick. The 4.6 in both flavors didn't get get them and neither did the two or 4 valve flavors of 5.4. Also you do know gm engines also have them they just don't usually get to fail before the lifters do or it chucks the bottom end out through the oil pan. Also like most gm owners you never did learn to read in that trailer park of yours since page one literally says no ls. So go back to fixing your mullet and chugging bud light:flipoff2:

what about the honda v6’s everyone throws in sandrails and the aussies boost to the moon to get around displacement rules?

Barra if you can get one.

This thing has the 3.7 V6.
