What's new

New Ford Duallys are 6+ months out?

I thought there is an electric heater in the DEF tanks on these trucks?
I looked for a bit to educate myself and it looks too me the def heater is a 12v/DC heater not a AC 120v deal. Have you seen otherwise?

I just bought a 2019 3500 Denali dually. Finding a hitch for this thing and camper tiedowns is really stressing me out.

We go on vacation in two weeks. Everything is back-ordered for what I need.

I honestly much prefer the 6 speed to the 10.
The 10 speeds we own in trucks, I can't stand them.

Seems to not be a big deal in the Exploders
I just traded in my '17 F450 for a new '22 F450 in January. I hate the 10spd compared to the 6spd in the old truck. Superbusy and always searching for the right gear. Lots of extreme downshifting too. Once I found out that the trans design was a collaboration with Alison/GM it mad a lot of sense, BC the last duramax truck I owned shifted similar, and I hated it too. I find myself in manual mode a lot. The truck has almost 30K miles on it now and ita about to have to go back to the dealer because the 6-5 downshift is so hard when towing a loaded trailer, it feels like the truck was just rear ended. Its the only thing I dont like about the truck

I was in the market for a truck and went with a 19 GM with l5P engine and 6 speed. The 10 speeds don't have enough street cred yet.

I had an 03 Dmax with the 5 speed. The transmission never had a single issue.

It was funny, GM thought the Allison transmission venture/ Collab and name was going to boost them way up and jump them in front of everyone. Turns out either Allison transmissions were never worth a shit in the first place or there's nothing that GMs terrible build quality and shitty engineering can't tarnish beyond repair.

Dodges truck transmissions took a bad reputation from the second gens, but since then they stepped up in a big way. The Aisin in the Ram 1 ton is damn near perfect. Let's hope they stuck with the 6 speed and shun the 10 speed stupidity

Happy I still have my 05 Ram. :flipoff2:

I loved my 05. But it has its problems. The AC and cooling system were really not big enough so I augmented with electric fans and that fixed it. The 6 speed hand shaker was badass. Had a last minute WTF moment and almost kept it right before I sold it with 285k on the clock

But in all honesty, my '17 is twice the truck that one was and then some. Dodge dialed in the DEF system and it's just not a big deal to add the Def.

I will say the 10spd in this '23 ford is great. no skip shifting, smooth as can be. Hasnt hunted for gears that i could tell

Might just need a relearn done on the adaptive Trans learning..

I haven't had any issues with the 10 speed. I locked out gears as needed through the mountains, even out on the interstate into the headwind. Didn't technically need to but I am pretty attentive to how engines are pulling lugging etc. so it just made sense to lock out some gears when there was no need for that ground speed / engine RPM.

if I'm heavy i just lock out 8th, 9th and 10th. but im gas so i need more rpms. but i have had it feel funky a time or two.

My 2019 6 speed F550 has been doing the gear slam thing for about a year. I'm waiting for the transmission to blow up to find out what's wrong with it.

I can confirm that syndrome riding with another tech going to lunch, thought we were rear ended no doubt.
His is still kicking too.

My 2020 7.3 f250 only has 17k miles on it. Not sure if worth getting rid of.

So this is a brand new truck, few months old and it needs to go back to the dealer for a half dozen items? Just trying to follow along
At work we have a 22 F350 in our group that’s sitting down at ford with the transmission in the bed. 15,000 miles on it and the transmission took a shit. It’s been there for 5 weeks already and there’s no ETA on getting a trans in. It’s bull shit

I have had a '19 Ram since December of '19 and it just passed 100,000 miles. I live in frozen hell where it will stay for months below zero. Going through 4 winters I have a few tips for def in the winter. These are all my PERSONAL experience. This is a company truck so no delete. But in 4 years it has been to the dealer more for radio updates :shaking: than DEF issues. And I am not gentle to this girl. In 4 years she has never been plugged in, fires up fine at -40. She is driven daily except if I go on vacation. Gets parked outside no mater the weather. Boss has a hard on for idling so no letting her run on cold days. I am nice and give her new oil every 5000 miles and fuel filters every 10,000 miles.

As for the DEF:
  • NEVER fill the def tank over half way if its going to freeze. It will fuck up the level sensor and you will get a trip to the dealer for a reset.
  • Block heaters don't help a DEF tank. DEF Tank heater only works when the truck is running and only thaws the line to the exhaust and the very bottom of the def tank.
  • If you have driven 5000 miles and your DEF level has not changed, don't add more because you "think" you need it. She will be just fine until it thaws.
  • If you get the dreaded DEF level warning and add DEF and the level doesn't change, find a warm shop to park it in for the night and she will be all happy in the morning.
  • If you get the DEF level warning and add DEF and you are 500 miles from home, just keep driving. As long as you don't shut the truck off, it will keep driving as normal.

Like I said, this is just my personal experience. Not one of our fleet trucks. Or a friends truck. Of the 100,000ish miles on it, less than 500 have been driven by someone other than me.

I will say I have a coworker that has a '20 F350 and lives the same place I do and he treats it the same way and has only been to the dealer once for DEF issues:flipoff2:

Afraid of the 7.3 horror stories I read online. I bought it as a forever truck, single cam pushrod etc, and if it randomly blows up, not sure I want to take that risk.
By the end of the year we will have 150k on the 7.3s in the fleet. Only bad experience I had was a oil filter leaking in bfe. I don’t have any complaints besides 10 speed being semi irritating, however it turns less than 2k rpms at 80mph so hard to beat that.

I wouldn’t buy into the noise, if you’re worried get the extended warranty. Worst comes to worst it’s looks like it’s a hell of a lot easier to change out a long block 7.3 than a 6.7.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with gear slamming issues. Surprised the 6 speed trucks also did it. Just bought a 99 7.3 automatic service truck to keep miles off my 22.

There are really good deals on Ford ESP plans from certain dealers.
If I was faced with selling at a loss I would really consider one to ease piece of mind.

You can read those stories about any brand. Pretty sure it comes down to luck of the draw and to a certain degree maintenance.
