What's new

New Ford Duallys are 6+ months out?

Bumped into a guy with a 2022 f450 a few days ago. He likes it and is getting 15mpg around town. It’s a beautiful truck. I should have just done the 450 when I had the chance.

He HATES the dealer he bought it from. I bought the f350 from the same dealer. Got some advice on where to go for service.

Big news….

After nearly a year of dealing with the spring perch recall, I dropped the truck off on Thursday at a dealer 90 miles away… I won’t share what Ford did to convince me until it’s final.

Dealer called me today. Truck is “fixed.” A Friggin year of dealing with this crap… and this dealer pulled it off (according to the dealer) in 48 hours.

Will review and pick up on Monday.

Picked up. Welds not bad looking. Fixed a couple of other little things and the wiper recall.

Service guy said he and the tech couldn't figure out why no one wanted to touch it. Guess it took less time to fix the perches than do the wipers, oil and fuel filters.

Waiting on some things Ford promised for the hassle

Good deal you got it fixed and got to retain the warranty part..

Hope Ford takes care of you.

Stopped by local Ford dealer Friday to talk about ordering a 23 SD.
The sales rep was old school and limited BS. Said the order banks were still closed, but I could place my order whenever I wanted to. My order would go literally at the the bottom of the SD pile on her desk. When it was my turn so to speak, she'd call me and see if I wanted to proceed. Said it might be end of Feb or early March when the ordering starts back up.
They offered me very fair for my current truck.
She did say the XL, XLT and Lariats will be ordered first. The KR, Limited and Platinums are still up in the air as far as when they will be available for order.
If you are ordering anyway you might try securing a X plan pin.
I think you might be able to get a stock ownership pin still, my dealer sales manager thought it was still available.

Some dealers will deal so you don't have to get one but it makes it a little simpler IMO.

That's the plan. They take X Plan, I made sure to ask
I wanna tow with a 7.3 truck before I order one. Just to make sure I like how it handles 10k

If all else fails, join the Mustang Club of America for $25 and get the X Plan. That's what I did.

I just checked the local (and largest in GA) Ford dealer.

They only have 9 F350s in stock. 1 dually, 1 long bed fleetside and 7 short beds.
They are priced at msrp. A month ago they were $7-800 over msrp.

No 2023s.

They have 58 F250s in stock. All short beds. All at MSRP. Cheapest one is $54,424 (4x4 XL). The most expensive is $95,898 (Lariat).

Who is ordering all these short bed trucks

The dealer for floor stock. Most people just carry golf clubs in their truck beds I guess.

I ordered an F150 from them in 2013. They had one hundred and fifty F150s on the lot. All short beds. I ordered a 6.5' bed (longest bed available with a CC).
I've driven long beds for years now. No doubt a short bed looks better. But with the combo of a tool box (actually has useful items inside) and a GN ball, there ain't much room left with a short.
Aesthetics aside, the longer bed is a better choice for me as well

IMO, a fullsize truck with a CC and a short bed looks goofy. Like Matt Roloff.

You wont even know its back there. I have the 4.30 gears and pulling my 30' gooseneck with 2 jeeps (about 16,900lbs) it does great.

Put some knock-off A7310 Torklift Stabeloads on the truck a few weekends ago.

The suspension is setup on most trucks these days to be "loaded" when the headlights are in the trees. Outside of air suspension I am not really sure there is a better way, maybe auto adjusting healights like the luxury cars have?

The bitch is you have to drill the main overload leaf springs... I have heard that is not a fun task with a hand drill so I used my mag drill and a carbide annular cutter. Hot knife through butter.

I hope this will replace my previous attempt at upper overload spacers. They worked awesome at stabilizing the load and adding the overload much sooner in the travel but are a pain in the ass to install and remove. They aren't hard technically but you are wrenching over the top of the tires and that made me not remove them when I get where I am going = rough as fuck unloaded.
If it was raining or muddy you can for sure forget about removing them on vacation and then having to reinstall them.

I have a idea for a "Selectable" upper overload stop. It would allow me to have normal overload distance and a shortened distance for towing.

Seems like airbags would have been a better choice, if you are not wanting to reach over the tires in shitty conditions and/or forget about height control. Yeah, they have more parts and pieces than what you installed. But they are pretty trouble free IME and everything can be controlled from the driver's seat. JMHO.

I have a F350 CC LB 4x4, 7.3 with 4.30's and tow about that weight. It does fine with that weight in my towing conditions, mountains from 7,500' to 10k. I never understood people saying you won't even know it's back there because I've always been aware of the trailers I've towed no matter the weight. It's will downshift appropriately on the climbs, or you can manually lock it in a gear, and it pulls all the hills I've done so far with out too much trouble. It will go down to 6th gear on the long steep pulls at about 4kRPM, but it's not slowing down at all. The most I've towed is about 8,500# trailer with a full IBC tote in the bed and it felt fine to me. On long mountain grades I just lock it in a lower gear and let it pull and it does fine...except the mileage drops to 7-9MPG. It doesn't pull the steep inclines in a triple OD like a diesel but it's also 8k cheaper than a diesel and gas is $1.75/gal cheaper too.

Not on any of my trucks, I'm not an airbag fan.
That's not fair to say but I am not a fan add-on air bags. In theory it's all great but IMO there is more trouble than its worth.

This is going to be like a brand discussion, you do you and I'll do me.
This kit was $76 and can be enabled in under a minute.
Literally nothing to loose except my labor to install. I'll let you know if it was worth it, I really have no idea.
I suggested them to my father in law on his '19 SRW F-350 and he put the real ones (almost $400) aside from having to drill the leaf springs he said they work like they are supposed to. Keeps the truck level and adds "support".

Not bashing at all on what you chose to install, just thinking that airbags would do the same thing and you don't have to reach under the truck to adjust them. Sounds like for $76 and some time they might be the way to go, if they work like you want them to. My current tow rig (01 F350 CC longbed dually v10) has airbags on it and they work great. I can adjust them going down the road, if I want/need to. They are infinitely adjustable, depending on what kind of tongue weight/bed weight I am dealing with. But there are a lot more parts to go bad than what you installed.
Maybe the best of both worlds would be for someone to install airbags and what you installed. Then they could choose which one they wanted to use...or if something went wrong with the airbag setup, they could use what you use to control ride height.

i pulled my 2" blocks and put 5" on my single wheel 350. it didn't hit the over load till it was squatted real bad. didn't change the ride at all. i really didn't need more spring, sway was not my problem. but i may want something like that if i get a cab over.

For sure they offer the ideal setup of adjustability, I think they are awesome and I am sure I could install a set/compressor etc. that would make me happy but the cost and time expense would increase by orders of magnitude.
The combo of sxs/rack and bumper pull toyhauler puts a decent payload on the truck, we'll see how these do.

A buddy of mine (after fighting with air bags for years on several trucks) just goes and gets 2 leaves added to his trucks now that he pulls heavy with. Doesn't even use the overloads but probably rides much rougher than the previous configuration. It's always a balance.
These main overload shims only have an effect when installed, ZERO effect when swung out. That seems ideal for a solution.

CarterKraft

personally i put airbags on every truck i tow with, never ever had a problem. i also have the sxs rack and a travel trailer when on vacaction.

but thought i'd mention.... see that contact pad for the top over load spring? I think you'd be better off and just as cheap to take that pad off and install a bumpstop with a single stud there so it engages that spring earlier in travel. i did it once on an f350 that i was towing with before the airbag kit showed up and it worked as i wanted and wasn't at all noticeable when unladed.

i just looked thu my amazon history, and i believe these are the ones i used. the truck i used them on was a srw cclb f350 '10.

edit* also just because i thought i'd share. i just got back from a trip with a buddy we went ~3000mi round trip. S Glamis, N Glamis, and Havasu. one sxs on the rack and one in the trailer. all of our sand tires and extra shit. towed with his truck an f450 6.7, 6-speed trans. fully deleted, i think he said the tune claimed +100hp over stock. we would've saved a bit on fuel if we would have used my 6.2 gasser. towing mostly at 67-70mph. we ended the trip at 6.9mpg on the dash. $2,135 in fuel for the truck (anouther $700 in 91 gas for the buggies) i think the low gearing of the 450 hurt the mpg. we got the same when towing his massive 3axle momentum fifth wheel that was much heavier.

my 6.2 gasser 4.3 gears, i tow the same setup, and its a tiny bit slower over all, 65-70mph, but it always claims 7.5-8mpg. and with gas being cheaper and all, i'm happy to stick with gas.

What's you empty fuel mileage?
I get around 17 avaerage empty and 11-12 towing. So your towing numbers aren't far off at all. Especially with the cost of diesel these days.

I have just over 7k on my new f250 with the 7.3 and 4.30 gears and I am getting 13.1 empty on a trip and when loaded towing 17k about 8.5mpg @ 78mph. Combined city and some highway I'm at 10.9 not great but I didn't buy this truck for the mileage. Now if I'm on the highway and keep it under 70 I can get 14mpg but I hate going that slow. :-)

Buys $80k truck while talking about ordering another $80k truck immediately... complains about price of airbags? :flipoff2:
