Major Bridge in Baltimore Collapses After Being Struck by Cargo Ship

Cyber attack on a physical structure? Please, continue. Oh, you really are going to keep talking...?

Could 695 be used by some traffic as an alternative route? Sure. But why is it, do you suppose, I-95 runs directly through and along nearly every cargo terminal?
Bridge shut down for 3-5 years? Not unpossible.
Channel shut down for 3-5 years? Not a chance

Not directed at you xr-nut, Lara is fucking idiot.
I would bet they are already cutting steel to get it clear.

Wonder if they will replace it with a tunnel? Probably not the fastest way to go.

No matter what goes back there our tax money will end up paying for it and then they will make us pay for it again with tolls...

Alright so I have a few questions. So ships this big turn super slow correct? All the stuff we have seen video wise shows the power issues just before the ship hit the bridge. Have we seen a timeline showing when the ship first reported power issues? I know they called in a distress signal before the collision with enough time to stop car traffic. But a ship that big seems like it had been off course for many minutes before hitting the bridge. So how long would it take a ship that big to get that far pff course?
#tinfoil. The ship was hacked and they had to cycle all the power in an attempt to regain control. Mistakes were made and they didn’t drop all anchors when they originally lost control. In a last ditch attempt to not hit the bridge they threw it in full reverse, rolling coal, but it was too late.
All wind and tide related, with that much sail area on both port and starboard, it wouldn't take much more than a breeze to get that thing moving given enough time and distance.

4 minutes prior to collision.

Thoughts are the generator is what turned the lights back on but not propulsion or steering.

Apparently they never regained propulsion and the smoke is from attempting to air start the main engine.
According to the Internet
Most of those huge diesels use something called "bunker fuel or HFO" for fuel in their diesels. VERY dirty fuel that emits huge amounts of smoke on start up.

I've also read reports that the channel is rated for 2 ships that size to use at the same time.
It is. On the tracker website, there is two lanes even under the bridge. In satellite views on maps you can see the darker areas due to the depth of the channel and it's just as wide, if not wider, under the bridge. I don't know shit from fuck about large ship rules and etiquette, so I'm not sure if they advise against running two ships under a bridge that wide, don't care, it's against the rules, whatever. Hell, that ship could fit through there sides ways like an Indian guy analling Sasha Grey.

Yes.

It was on course and heading directly where it was supposed to, perpendicular to the bridge. If you've only watched the short clips of the collision and think it was angling in, that's due to perspective because of camera angle.

Has to be run by the Chinese, or Biden wouldn't be foaming at the mouth for the US fed to pay for the rebuild.

Buttigieg Praises Cargo Ship For Helping Dismantle Racism In American Roads

BALTIMORE, MD — As crews continued to deal with the aftermath of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg praised the cargo ship Dali for helping dismantle racism in American roads.
With the investigation into the cause of the disaster still in progress and the rebuilding of the bridge expected to be a long and complicated process, Buttigieg hailed the collapse as a step in the right direction to root out the deep-seated systemic racism and oppressive ideology that formed the foundation of the nation's roads and bridges.
"This catastrophe is a beautiful turning point," Buttigieg told reporters. "Gone are the days when we will allow these symbols of discrimination to continue to stand. Thank you, cargo ship Dali, for taking such bold action to dismantle these oppressive structures. Also, I'm gay."
The collapse of the bridge resulted in the closure of the Baltimore port, raising speculation that shipping delays and supply line issues will lead to more economic challenges across the country. Biden administration officials say this is a small price to pay to cleanse the U.S. transportation system of its bigotry. "Sacrifices need to be made," Buttigieg said. "If crippling the national economy and making it more difficult to obtain goods and maintain commerce is what it takes to absolve us of the sins of our racist bridges and roads, so be it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to catch a flight for my vacation. Chasten is taking me to Turks & Caicos! Eeek!"
At publishing time, Buttigieg had commissioned a life-sized bronze statue of the cargo ship Dali to be placed in the Patapsco River.

Trying to cut apart the bridge and lift it out is going to be a messed up gig, talk about hazard pay. They will have to dive and cut the bridge up, then hoist it out in small bits. That's going to be super hazardous work for the divers with all the twisted frame.

It's not like they have to worry about not damaging anything or blocking the ship channel. I'd bet they'll use big demo shears and chop up as much as they can down to chunks they can lift or drag out of the way. With the amount of money being held up by this, I'm expecting to see some massive lifting rigs getting moved in very soon.

I’d be surprised if they go in there and just start cutting away all willy nilly, there’s still an investigation to be performed, and the integrity of the containers/ ship is a concern.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they attempt to float sections to help move them out of the way as well.

Fun fact; boats use laminated glass too :dustin:

I don't think there's much investigation to do in the physical bridge. They already know the root cause of the collapse and that is 100% in the ship's engines, electrical systems and whatever else failed that lead to the loss of power. I really can't see them caring much about anything related to the bridge, outside maybe directly at the pier that was struck and failed first.

I remember when they demo'd the Cooper River bridge in Charleston. They just blasted the main span and dropped it in the water and the fished the scrap out with grapples and clamshells. Granted, it was already "cut" in to more manageable pieces.

I can't imagine the risk of sending divers down to cut up steel that's got unknown stresses on it...not knowing what way it's going to fuck off when it releases. That's scary enough on the ground where you have a little more mobility.

I see them using whatever mechanical means they can find to chop the thing up and avoid putting anyone near it. As far as freeing the ship, they can "easily" put a long arm shear on a barge and whittle away the steal hanging off either side. Leave the rest on the bow to deal with when they get it to whatever port is going to repair it. As far as I've heard, the shit is slightly aground, but there's not serious damage below the water line.

Navy divers and something that goes boom. They get the practice cutting bridge stuff with plastic explosive and the bridge gets cut into smaller pieces.
