Major Bridge in Baltimore Collapses After Being Struck by Cargo Ship

I also thought she died a few months ago, it was something weird like turning around in a circle driveway and ended up in a pond or something like that. Stereotype does check out

Feb 11, close enough to a couple months. Sure wasn't 6 days.

I havent followed shit about this event or know shit about ships but dont all these things have huge redundant electrical systems built in? Are the engines diesel? Seems like they would have multiple automatic transfer switches with generator and ups battery backup systems in place to prevent even the smallest loss in power. At least to the critical systems relevant to steering and navigation.

Last I saw was the power was out for 4 minutes before the hit...seems like some sort of backup system would have kicked on in that amount of time. At least for steerage.

That seems like forever. Its typical for there to be a delay where you will see a loss for a transfer to happen but that can also be offset by a ups that will carry the load for a few seconds until the transfer happens. In that case you wouldnt even see a blip.

Watch the video in post #330. Power wasn't out for 4 minutes straight.

I’m sorry for the crew and others lost in this incident.
RIP. Terrible and sad.
I’ve been doing electrical work on a few bridges for a long time and have had some close calls being next to traffic in a bucket truck or up on the structure at night. Having a vessel hit a pier is a whole new level of what the fuck. I can empathize with them.
You can’t close the river to marine traffic to patch and stripe or fix lights, but good luck getting people to man the already risky work. I have very few people who are willing to work with me on these jobs. Sure, part of it is because I’m a dick, but some just have more sense.
This incident reminds me of when I had just finished a shift at a paper mill and was up the road watching hockey in my motel room when this happened:

I won’t even start with the navy stories.

Fawkkkk. The contractor on the bridge fixing potholes is a family friend. As in shows up to the family christmas party. BIL says he's a mess. Understandable. Not a huge company, they're weaseled into a niche state highway maintenance contracts for small stuff. Murph lost his childhood friend/business partner 2 years ago. This is gonna crush him. They're just not big enough that he doesn't know everyone that works for him. When Sharon died he asked what I needed done and he would take care of it. Without a doubt, that kind of guy. Did I say fawk!

That's terrible :frown:

my bosses son is a costal pilot in canada. responsibilities always go back to the captain here. and as far as we can conclude the pilotsdid all they could.

problem beeing this will affect every port with a bridge in north america.. and probably even other things.

big fuck up but im pretty surethe pilot cant be blamed for mechanical failure, and in imo law the captain is ultimately responsible no matter what.

condolences to the families effected.
