John Deere workers on strike

Thank you sir, you are exactly right. And when I try to explain to people about the calibrated engine component being a result of the EPA they try saying stuff such as "well so and so doesn't!" And I say "it doesn't run like a Deere does it?"
Alright , well fuck the epa then.

Easy peasy solution

I’m sorry but John Deere can kiss my ass. Today’s example
Hydraulic fan motor on my 644j stopped going into high. $748 for a fucking coil and what looks like a standard spool. $1300 for the whole motor and spool. What a joke. This is a $350 max part.

A contractor has a time limit to get a job they bid done in a deadline. Equipment down cost them time and money. Paying labors to stand around because a machine is down cost the contractor. They don’t have time to wait a month for a service tech to come look at their equipment no matter what brand it is.

I guess you have bugs in your carpet, you should take care of that huh.
I'm in construction. The loader broke? Get some wheelbarrows and manpower. The mini-ex broke? Grab a shovel and dig 5' down.
A little different when your talking 1000's of acres

Keeping those guys working is a contractors livelihood. It’s the exact same thing. Contractors are typically hard bidding big projects. Loss of revenue to downtime is a profit killer in any industry. Not just ag.
If the contractor's excavator goes down he can have a rental there next morning.
Probably not the same in Ag

Your correct. When a combine goes down, it’s the time of year everyone else is combining and they are all being used.

The dealers here keep a couple used combines on the lot that they rent out just for that purpose.

time to start diagnosing it further than just the failed part, now you gotta know why it failed
solenoid coils can be repaired if you're stubborn enough

Coil seems to be working via the screwdriver in the center. It’s the stem that seems to be having the trouble. I took it apart cleaned it up made sure the spool moves with a poker and put it back together. I put the coil on and energized it but the spool did not do anything.

I reassembled it and will run it for a while tomorrow to see if the fan speeds up.

ah damn, never fiddled around with the stem guts
sometimes just blowing through the pilot hole backwards with brake clean and air is enough to dislodge whatever got in there, but I've never gone so far as to cut one open

Most unscrew, however the tolerances of those fuckers are splitting tenths/super precise springs and such. My luck taking them apart and getting them to work again is incredibly low.

You mean the stem bit disassembles further? I thought they were all just crimped together bullshit. I'll have to look closer in the future.

good application of the ER collet set, gripping that kinda shit to unscrew rather than mangling with a pliers

Some local peeps are pretty grumpy on FB saying they were sold out. Seems like a good contract to me considering they are doing repetitive work that a child could do.

This solenoid game has been going on with CAT too, prices have doubled/tripled on stems/coils.

To the point it has made it a little difficult to cost effectively troubleshoot some problems due to cost of guesses.

Didn't they just announce that they're moving a whole line to Mexico?

The plant here makes their mid-size excavators. They just announced they're building an entirely new facility next door to that will make the minis. They're also not union here.....wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Last year their forestry line moved from Iowa to Canada. Next year two construction equipment lines are moving to Mexico.
They also are seeing a sales slump on the ag side.

Two friends of mine were laid off indefinitely last week. They said everyone with 5 years or less at the company will be laid off regardless of being on an ag or construction line.

So far this year they are at around 1500 layoffs in Iowa and Illinois with 600-800 more expected by the end of the year.

A friend of mine works at the one here. Was Deere-Hitachi, but apparently the Hitachi thing is over so now just Deere. They've slowed production and cut hours. He's been there long enough that he's not at the front of the line for layoffs, but still probably at risk.

This is what they announced a couple months ago. I though they were going to be building the minis there, but apparently it's for their electric line:
