What's new

Go fast 3 Link Tacoma sas

Nothing really new. Been wheeling a bunch. Went to sand hollow a few more times. Moab for a week for ejs. Moved to a new house outside the city. Wheeled one of the local trails. Did break a u joint in moab but was an easy fix.

Transmission is starting to go so was time for some changes. Cost to much to rebuild the Toyota trans so plan to sell it all and I picked up an atlas today and got the adapters from lc engineering to go from the 3.4 to a th350 and a flex plate. Just need to order a trans now

Rebuild kits are a couple hundred dollars. There’s gotta be a Mexican transmission shop there somewhere that can do one for semi cheap.

Every quote I got was around 3-4K and no lead. Was kind of we will get to it when we aren’t busy. A reman was 3k from Toyota so that was my original plan. Then this atlas popped up and for what I could sell all my Toyota stuff, I could get a stronger trans, atlas and probably walk away even.

Holy fuck. :eek:Not gonna miss having a fourth gear?

Business is booming in this inflation. Nobody wants to do the “easy” jobs. Most places I called didn’t want to be bothered since I was bringing them the trans. They wanted the labor money to pull it. I’ve just never cracked open a transmission or else I would try it myself

But when times get tough I’m sure they’ll be calling.

Just saw your edit. I thought about it and no I won’t miss the od/4th gear. I’ve been running my trans unplugged for a few years and haven’t had od since it’s not using the tcm so I had full manual control. Even driving back to the trucks on the rubicon and around moab/sand hollow I never felt like I missed it. Trucks pretty slow with the small motor and big tires

Atlas picture didn’t upload

And with the new house, I have a longer drive in the dark and we have lots of wild horses and donkeys so the 89 needed more light. Made a bumper. It’s kind of ugly but will serve the purpose. Still needs to be grinded and capped

I always heard a th350 takes a lot of power to turn. I'll be interested in your direct comparison.
The original plan was to use a th400 and I was told and after research see that takes more power to turn than a th350 and the 350 required the least of the gm trans. The other option was the 700r4 but the atlas came with the adapter to the 350 so that helped decide the trans

Some new stuff. Pulled the old trans and tcases and got the new th350 and atlas put together. Torque converter showed up today as well. Lcengineering pushed the dowel pins in backwards for the adapter plate which sucks but they are supposed to send me a new one. Afraid to bend or break the plate pushing the old ones out so kind of stuck waiting till that comes in before I move on.

at the rate you are going, you will be needing a built 400 to handle the LS that is coming in the next year, the snowball has started ... just saying.

the 350 support to handle the offroad abuse just isnt there, but 400 all day every day.

really? everyone i know runs a 400, maybe its a cost thing 🤷
I hate linking shit from the old place but.......

Plenty of guys running a healthy ls with a 350 with no issues. Only way I’d do a ls swap is if this motor blows and even then it would just be a stock 5.3

This 350 got some stronger internals and a reverse manual valve body so I’m not to worried.

Couple days of struggling, adapter plate being wrong, and some casting on the trans hitting the motor not allowing it to sit flush had us stumped for two days. But the transmission and atlas are in.
Had to cut the crossover exhaust. Not really sure what to do with it as I can’t get the flanges off because the bolts keep breaking. Plan is to run it down and under the trans and connect in the passenger side.

got the atlas cross brace tacd together and still need to make the super complicated transmission mount but need to order the shifters to get that made. Floor needs some cutting and then some filler plates. It’s a start though and not much info on a 5vz/3.4 to th350 out there. Nothing ground breaking but something different.

Still think the torque converter is wrong as it won’t pull out of the trans to the flex plate like it should but getting that sorted

no way shit ton of peeps run th350,, i mean a shit ton, one great thing is they are very for giving, damn near fill it up with mud, drain fluid add new and repeat. just super great tranny for what we would do, even a couple guys here run big blocks with them.

Transmission crossmember welded and got the flanges on. Need to trim and cap the ends. Exhaust is probably half done. Everything should be ordered and on its way. Getting closer

Dodge got some new wheels and tires too and picked up 5 more 40s

Everything should be welded or 90% at least. Shifters came in today. We got a ton of rain so time got cut short to chase leaks and keep the yard from flooding.

welder was acting up on the one weld. May have had some grinding dust in the joint and welder kept popping… sucks when it’s an easy joint and should have been a clean long weld

Before I go cutting, those that have installed an atlas, how much can I shorten the all thread and sleeve for the shifters? I need it significantly shorter and assuming as long as the shifters have enough room to swing, I can go as short as I want but want to double check and my search results haven’t been what I’m looking for.

Well in a thrash to get it done, I got the transmission and atlas installed and everything Plummed and ready to go. Drove it about 50 miles and we are ready for the rubicon and fordyce. Seems to crawl pretty good and besides a leak in the trnamission oil pan, everything seems to work. I have a ton of finish work left to do once I get home but it’s more than good enough for the trip.

Have about 75 miles logged. No real issues. Just lots of finish work it needs. Exhaust leaks under heavy load so it sounds shitty. Trans leaks a little out of the dipstick.

but did some more clearance checking. Everything seems to clear and be good. Finally swapped the toyo 40s I’ve had laying around on. Think it looks so much better/less ballon to the tires.

trailer got a fresh coat of stain and started packing. Getting excited for rubicon and fordyce.

Interested to see how you like those toyos. I could never get them to work in the dry, they only hooked up in the wet lol!

They seem to be working fine so far. Wheeling here is pretty slippery compared to what I’m used to and they seem to be sticking.

We did fordyce yesterday and start the rubicon Monday.

So far so good. Trans and atlas work well. Reverse is pretty high geared and the stall is a little higher but I’m learning. No issues till pulling into camp when the rear locker air line let go. But ran a new one today and ready for rubicon Monday.

I'm surprised that you went with only a 2spd for a multipurpose rig, that thing has to be gutless in high range, unless you have super deep axle gears.

Awesome! How was fordyce? Busy with trek I bet
It was good. Did the river run so down 5,4 and 3 to committee and back up. We had fun. Nice to float in the lake. And the foods always good

Axle gears are 5.29. Actually picked up power it feels in high. I had a crawl box with 2.28 and 4.7 on the old cases and never used more than the 4.7 so only wanted a 2 speed. Besides reverse it’s more than geared deep enough. Now it’s figuring out the new stall ratio. 4.3 gears in the atlas would be my preference over the 3.8 though.

It’s more of learning to wheel with the new setup now and this is pretty close to what most jeeps run gearing wise and power wise

Well with the 9", at least you have the option to go 6.xx+ r&p. The easiest way to make something get up go quicker is lower gearing. Even the big hp koh guys run some type of under drive or 6.20s with 40s.

I have a 3.4 auto with 5.29s and only 35s. It's definitely no rocket ship
