Go fast 3 Link Tacoma sas

Well with the 9", at least you have the option to go 6.xx+ r&p. The easiest way to make something get up go quicker is lower gearing. Even the big hp koh guys run some type of under drive or 6.20s with 40s.

I have a 3.4 auto with 5.29s and only 35s. It's definitely no rocket ship
Definitely not claiming it to be a speed demon. But I can go with the flow of traffic even with the th350. Maybe on the steep hills I have to slow down some but it holds it’s own.

Well we are home two days early. Not even a mile into the rubicon, the front cv snapped. I’m thinking the cv ran out of degrees and was binding or some how cracked on fordyce and a simple climb broke it the rest of the way. We turned around as to not get in a worse situation only having 2wd (I only have a rear spare shaft) and cut our losses and came home early. Floated in loon and did some tourist stuff in Tahoe so kind of saved the trip.

And it wouldn’t be a trip for us unless we had trailer issues. Dad had a blow out between Tahoma and fordyce. I had a bent wheel that we changed on the trailer and my dad lost a set of trailer bearings in the middle of Nevada.

Looks like you'll have to make another trip out:grinpimp: Next time plan to run the whole fordyce trail.

We ran all of fordyce last year. It was good. Sucked hauling all the camping gear around. To park at Cisco, run the trail, camp at meadow lake and then drive around. We may do it again next year.

Out of 7 years doing the rubicon, only 2nd issue we’ve had and first time keeping us from doing the hole trail. First time was our first year on it and I tore all the knuckle studs out of a Toyota axle so I’d say our odds are pretty good lol. We will be back next year though

Messed with the driveshaft some today. Got the cv cut off, single u joint end tacd on. With the slip at the axle end, it still binds bad. Talking with driveline tech in hurricane and he was messing with a trail gear slip and realized they get 40 degrees of angle so flipped it and it was closer. With some grinding I ended up getting 49 degrees out of the yokes and u joints move freely. I’ll finish welding it tomorrow and see if it works.

I’m hoping it does or else I’ll have to limit the travel till I can afford a high pinion. A 14 in limit strap (16 in currently) will work but it translates to a lot of lost travel so that’ll be my last option.

Well made a new driveshaft with a single u joint at the top. A quick rear drive proved there was no way in making this work unless I went back to a cv and limited the downtravel. Go figure limiting the downtravel would be almost 4 inches (only 2 or so inches of downtravel after).

after a ton of calls to driveline tech to figure something out, it was determined my only solution was a high pinion. So like usual, fires the money cannon and ordered a high pinion. Should be here next week hopefully.

driveline issues didn’t even cross my mind when I was putting the atlas in.

some pictures of the driveshaft though

I have 2 of those Derale coolers. They have worked pretty well so far.
I’m hoping this helps keep the trans cool. I’m sure it got hot driving up the big grades around rubicon. Still need to add a gauge though.

Got the truck back together and went for a drive. Seems to drive well. I’ll do one more drive tomorrow to finish breaking in the gears and then a shake down run next week and trail hero the following. Also picked up a new tool. A 1955 Cincinnati tool master mill. Should be fun to play with.

Day trip to sand hollow to shake down everything before trail hero next week. Everything seems to have worked except the fan on the trans cooler but I’ll bypass the thermostat and just leave it to constant on when the key is on. Also took the camper and slept in it and worked out well. Looking forward to more trips.

Guess I messes you there, I thought I saw your dad(buddy?) with the camando out there, but there was a lot of rigs.

Jelly that you can go there for a day trip, that place is so cool. :smokin:

Yeah the jeepster is my dads. I probably wasn’t far behind if you saw him.

Place is cool and our only real good wheeling spot. The construction on the 15 has been making it impossible for day trips. Can’t wait for that finish up.

Derail:

How do you like the pop up camper? Have you had a regular one before?

We had a pretty standard 8.5' camper. We liked it except for the wind drag/fuel consumption and the lumbering feeling when going on even the most mild dirt roads. I'd like to try a pop up, but I want to use it in all climates (wind and/or cold)

This is my first truck bed camper and so far i like it. Only spent 2 nights maybe 3 in it and it’s a million times better than the roof top tent I have.

I do notice it up there when driving and can feel the drag it creates. Normally I cruise at 73-74 with the trailer but felt better doing 70 with it. I didn’t notice a huge mpg hit with it on. Maybe .5-1 less but I also only average 11-14 with the trailer and crawler.

I haven’t been able to use it yet since it’s really cooled off and I still have a lot I want to do with it upgrade wise but I regret not getting one sooner. Having a short bed and only being able to find 8 ft campers it seemed had me hesitant driving with the tailgate done but after a few tests it’s not an issue. I wanted the pop up for the lower profile and it goes up in seconds. Couple latches and then some assists to raise it and your done. To close you just pull it down. And as you flip the latches just tuck any extra material.

Our standard cab over nearly cut the mileage in half at 65, not sure I ever tried much faster than that.

Did you buy new or used? I'm half tempted to go with the Alaskan, but they seem pretty barren for the money. I want a shorter and shower or I'm not sure the camper is worth it to me.
