French Tickler Buggy

Where can i find more information on the "maxdrive"? I just looked on Insta per this link but I didn't see anything on it.
I thought he had some videos on there with it, but I guess not.
This might explain it or show it betterer. Its basically a variable output drive for the rear. I'd guess some form of clutch. It allows you to maintain some forward pressure on the rear tires when doing a front dig up an undercut ledge. You also don't have to fight the t-case lever to get the rear to release or reengage.

I'd like to see some pictures and video of the MaxDrive setup as well. Few years back we discussed what I believe would be a similar setup using a drill rig dry clutch on the rear output. Friends shop just threw out a bunch of old parts I wish I could have gotten me hands on to play with.

She's gone.

Well, not really... But kinda.

I changed a lot of things in my life since January and offroad has not been on my mind at all. As much as it's been a part of me for all these years, I'm pretty much burnt out on it. I'm wrapping up customer projects but have been constantly turning down side work since the beginning of the year. Consequently, the buggy didn't make any progress. A few months ago, I had gotten fed up watching it sit in the corner of the shop and decided it was time to part it out out or do something else with it. And I'm now in a financial position to do something else.

My buddy Dillon from Flatlands Fabrication stepped up and took on the project. Him and I reached an agreement and he's been working on it when time allows. I'm not in a rush and he's got bigger things going on.
He has been excellent to deal with, the rear of the buggy is done (radiator, fuel cell and storage), he trussed and swapped in a new rear axle (van 14 bolt, 70" WMS), installed rear bumpstops, fixed the subframe and a couple of little details that needed to be taken care of.
Given the great work he's done, I elected to let him focus on a few more things, and I'm excited to see how they turn out.

Buggy will then go to another friend to get new interior panels put in.

By the time this pile comes back to me, I should be ready to focus on the portion that I like (wiring & plumbing) and have it ready at my leisure.

I'm currently enjoying other facets of life and probably won't update this thread for a bit. When it's back in my possession I'll post pics.
You can follow Dillon on Instagram to catch some updates of the ol'girl.

Long story short, I changed some things. New job, therapy, gym, eating better, going out and I'm really enjoying myself.
No kids or golf. I am happily enjoying rockclimbing and wakesurfing though.

What I'm reading is you need to buy a stock sami and wheel that for a bit
Probably not happening either.
Thinking about getting a Z06 or a CTS-V.

No idea if you're like me, but I bought a Lotus to scratch the speed/racing itch. It's STUPID expensive if you track your car....between track fees and upgrades, it's way more expensive than even the nicest buggies. And if you're dumb like me, driving it on the street is a recipe for either a very expensive coffin or a trip to jail and the impound lot.

Hopefully you're a more responsible person than I am. 😉

As someone that does not have a "need for speed," the old James May saying of "it's more fun driving a slow car fast, than a fast car slow" always comes to mind.

I had a rover powered Elise for a few months back in France. Great car.
I am not looking for a track car, rather a cool vehicle to drive around town and to a fancy restaurant once in a while as well as taking some road trips in comfort.

Yeah, they are like an incredibly well handling go cart....very quick; not really fast...especially by today's standards...but so much fun to throw around a track or curvy mountain road.

For that purpose, you'll probably love either choice...and you sound way more responsible than I was being with mine.

I had a close call years ago and came back to my senses quickly.
This would be another venture in the fast car territory. No idea if I'm ready for it or not.

I have a buddy who is into track, autocross and drifting. He does it with next to zero money. He used to run a ratty 240sx back before they were completely a cult car. He had adjustable struts and pulled bad ass tires out of the dumpster at the track because all guys with money thought they were junk at 30% tread. Other than that it was stock.

Now he runs a shitty miata with whatever the smaller motor is so he runs an illegal hidden nitrous system to "make it equal to the bigger engine"

As far as track, he had some way of getting track time for free, he was an instructor and did something else.

Yeah, autocross is surprisingly affordable as an entry way into the sport. That's the best place to start.

He did not start in autocross. He was just into cars 110% and did everything he could with very little money. He just worked really hard at doing whatever he could to get seat time. Even hosting events at small circle tracks, or whatever.

He also had a ~75 Camaro that he raced 24 hours of lemons in.

I'm not saying your wrong. If you're the average guy who just wants to buy a car and get on the track, I'm sure it's very expensive. But just like anything, effort can prevail over throwing money if that's really what you want to commit to.

Not like wheelin where you can just pick up whatever rig and head out to almost any trail or park for next to nothing with little effort.

Years ago during my midlife crisis I bought a Corvette. Living on a gravel road, it was always too dusty, bumpy, muddy etc and I rarely drove it. I also found it was hard to keep my foot out of the gas and never got to really experience its capabilities. I sold it after two summers.
That’s what I really love about off-roading. I can put my foot into the throttle and push myself and my vehicle to the limits without worrying about a ticket.
