What's new

CJ5 wild stretch and full build (Big Booty Judy)

I forgot he made a custom frame and this thing isn't really a CJ5 anymore. a stock CJ5 has no real business towing anything that needs trailer brakes.
Yeah, it's basically a 3/4 / 1 ton short wheelbase pickup with discs all around. Don't want to tow heavy, but a custom camper for short weekend trips for the wife and I would be fun.

It's a 1ton CJ5 silhouette truck:flipoff2::usa::beer:

Keeping with the classic/modern theme of Judy, I whipped up a little winch mount as an example for the weld class I teach three nights a week at the local high school. Students thought it was a pretty rad process to take a flat plate, lay it out and make your own parts.

Front bumper looks pretty menacing with that winch plate set on there

I've gotta say, i really love my miller 211. It just runs so well, and i have abused the crap out of it.

that'll do

there's just something about an 8274. They just look right on older rigs.

Looks good. Curious why you didn't mount the winch to the bumper? Seems like that would be much stronger than the plate you made.

That's the way the 8274 mounts. It pulls through the bottom hole and they've been run this way for decades. I can't drop it into the bumper due to steering box and sway bar location.

Bought a 8274 in '81 for $550.00<> new and had that same winch on a several vehicles the years.

Front lighting harness is complete! And tested. Ran it off one of my Dewalt 20v batteries just for testing purposes. I'm digging it.

was disappointed though. Brand new out of the box LED headlights. Passenger side was completely not functional. Figured it was a ground (its always a ground) pulled it apart, and sure enough, ground had separated from the circuit board. Re-soldered, reassembled and resealed got it working ( it had been on the shelf for months and was non-returnable.

Added some front driving lights to the front bumper.
20240309_204116.jpg
more braided loom, shrink wrap and Deutsche connectors.
20240309_143641.jpg
Added markers to the front fenders as well.

More Blending of new and old. Because it's a title 56 M38A1 (technically) I'm adding a few military details here and there. Frenched in this little port.
20240310_090211.jpg
and blended it

To stick in an infrared headlight off of a hmmwv. Thought it would be a neat detail.
20240310_102902.jpg
started on layout for the fuse and relay block mounting
20240310_122350.jpg
and crammed it all in and 8x8x6 inch electrical enclosure for fire and weather protection.
20240310_140719.jpg
added a pass through on the firewall (will be sealed to firewall with stick on foam weatherstripping)
20240310_150305.jpg
will house 7 total relays and 26 fuses, so i shouldn't be short on power capabilities for anything.
20240310_152319.jpg
fits like it was intended to be there. Will be hidden by the fender and will have an easy access removable panel on the inner fender well when complete.

Added an electrical quick connect, for jumping/ charging. I don't like it sticking out, going to move it back and shim down so the mate connects inside the hole in the bumper.
20240313_170240.jpg
fog lights added
20240313_170616.jpg
yet another component wiring harness with quick disconnects, everything is set up to be one way, lights are opposed plugs and different colors so my dumb ass cant mix them up and have one fog with one driving light come on.
20240314_112539.jpg
will clean this up when painted and permanent, but wanted to do a test fit for clearances installed.
20240314_114640.jpg
man that looks good
20240314_123511.jpg
everything is functional off my yest battery. I had one driving light that was non functional. My dumb ass swapped wires on the supply connector, the LED did what it was supposed to (acted like a check valve) and didn't come on. A quick wire flip and problem solved.
20240314_123449.jpg
confirmed infrared. Can't see it with the naked eye, but it.sure shows up well in pictures.

Started using Deutsch plugs years ago for everything I add aux lights to and they make life so much easier when you have to remove a bumper or headache rack.

Noticed your Vidmar cabinet, I've two in my shop at home. One is standard bench height and the other is 5' tall, great cabinets.

Great cabinets, but boy, do they know their value. Even used. Wish I could afford to redo the whole shop and line the walls with them for continuous cabinet space and one bitchin countertop/ work bench.

Excellent quality and last decades, mine are about 40yrs old. Got them for free from work, also got vidmar butcher block bench top that I made a 10' long bench out of.

Completed the instrument cluster wiring today. Added high beam indicator, left/right turn indicator, Check Engine Light, and (mini) shift light

12 pind deutsch connector took care of the job. Wastrying to be slow, methodical amd controlled trying to keep this portion of the harness really clean.

finished the headlight connections today as well.
