What's new

Anyone regret doing a Cummins swap?

It might be the tinnitus talking... but how the hell could you tell if the hood helped or not w/ all of the noise coming in through the firewall? :flipoff2::flipoff2:

Exactly

I am considerate of others.

You're in the wrong place then. :flipoff2:

I've put 140k on my 7.3 obs, and many miles on others. Plus rode in 12v and 24v trucks a lot. I've never thought they were that bad. But once you hop in a newer truck and go back, it can be a bit annoying.

I was just reading about someone who did 3 different layers of deadening on the entire cab floor. Stick on patches, some type of foam, and then the mlv on top. He also put foam all over the roof and even did some stuff on the doors. He said it was a moderate difference.

I'm not going to make a specific project out of sound reduction. I actually think the 12v will be better than the 7.3......(hopefully I don't eat my words) but I figured "while I'm there"

Same thing with the floor. I want to buy a nice rubber floor kit some day. While it's stripped, I'll do something.

I didn't think the 7.3 was all that loud until after 5 hours of continuous driving... as compared to the Alumaduty. Not my first 7.3 (also had a 24 valve)... but yeah, there's a huge difference.

Even if you improve it 10%, that's a massive improvement, IMHO.

Of course, I am planning on a sound deadening project on the OBS... So do the lizard skin so I know how well it will work for me. :flipoff2:

since the fords has the same cab from 99-16 (?) what did they do different to deaden sound? I know the motor is the big thing but I’m sure they did other things as well. Did they spray the fender wells and firewall with that foam shit that’s in newer vehicles?

Different models are better than others. SD is night and day. Then a split shot obs isn't bad. Obs 5 spd to manual OD is a huge difference. I've ran 4.10s and 3.54s with my 5spd. 65 was loud with 4.10s  although I just drive faster with 3.54s. :homer:

I did 3, 1 way trips while moving 900 miles each. Did 70-80 the whole time. Turn the music up!

7.3, auto, 4.88's, 34" tires... there was no 80 mph:flipoff2:

I'm sure there is some advancement in sound deadening.

They really have quieted the engines up though. Even with the hood popped a new 6.7 is pretty quiet. Then they run double OD trans for ridiculously low cruising rpm.

electronic fuel system have a huge role in noise/NVH reductions. mechanical diesels only have one fuel inject event, making for that diesel racket, while new diesels have ridiculous multiple fuel inject events for one power stroke and..... probably is one of why they have such a shorter injector service life compared to mechanical diesels' injectors.

they inject as many as 6(?) times, to spread out/avoid the loud knock the one-inject event injection makes.

Right, the 7.3 had the split shots starting in late 97 and was very noticeable. I think the duramax used 3. I haven't looked it up on newer stuff, but you're probably right at 6 pulses

Sometimes it make more sense, common sense, to go straight to the source of noise and try contain it there lol

I know, right. I just sent them a message on the website. I want my Cummins quieter too.
ive been eyeballing their shit for a couple years now

Anyone want any parts of the dodge?

I got the stock i/C, pipes, hx35, manifold and cummins to dodge adapter listed. I figured the ic, pipes, and turbo might be a nice cheap upgrade for an early 1st gen.

I had to replace a hood recently. My old one had the factory shit and the new one was all fucked up, so I ripped it off. Absolutely no difference that I could tell.

I'd be a little worried about adding too much wieght, not sure how heavy the stuff is.

The hood is worth at least some ramm mat. It doesn't make a difference in a older truck but you can tell once you've done all the work to quiet everything else. Its a good place to use the odd size scraps you have leftover.

There was somewhere that also said putting some on the oil pan made a difference, guy was a on a quest to have a super quiet 12v though.

Lizard skin(also helps with ac) or ram mat in the cab along with new weather stripping, many people skip that, makes a big difference.

shockingly they came through & emailed me prices and some photos

That makes sense based on something I saw with the R2.8....I remember watching a video on the R2.8L diesel and there were comments on how using a plastic oil pan was stupid because most R2.8s are going in offroad rigs....the response was it wasn’t plastic, it was some weird plastic like material but it was strictly done for sound deadening.

We were texting a bit about the DBs. I wasn't buying 95 db's in the cab. As hearing protection usually starts around 90db

30 db decrease is insane really. I may try the valve cover koozy, I'm not sure I can justify $1400 worth of shit though.

Anyone find any reviews on that stuff?

At 2500 rpm on the highway my 7.3 is at 93 DB according to my iPhone DB app. Idk how accurate it is

Hence the tinnitus. :flipoff2:

i think for $1400 my cheap ass will probably just redneck it and wrap a fiberglass welding blanket from harbor freight around the engine

There was a post years ago on cumminsforum where a guy did all of those blankets in stages. This is for a 24 valve. If I remember correctly he said the oil pan cover made the most difference.

Or just, ya know, actually apply fiberglass to the damn pan and valve cover.

You could build them up to an inch thick before they even get close to what the blankets cost.

The newest (07+) CAT engines all-ish have these covers on the oil pan side of the block, they are thick rubber not fire blanket material.
I wonder if there is a newer version of this engine format that has "sound Suppression"

I have heard this as well. The oil pan seems to amplify the noise....

Wierd, I'd have guessed that the oil pan would have been the least difference.

What about spraying lizard skin right on the oil pan? I'm sure it won't be as big of a difference as a huge thick blanket, but for the money it might be worth it.

I wonder how much effect just the butyl rubber mats would effect it.
That would be cheap under $50

how dues butyl rubber respond to heat/oil? I assume that it would eventually soften and slide off going 80 down the highway. ???

do it!

I would say you are right. But for a test of fuck yeah that worked great it might be worth it vs a $1200 blanket.

The lizard skin coating might be the best idea.
