What's new

Anyone regret doing a Cummins swap?

So I finally started making some moves to get this done. Dropped the dodge off at the local shop yesterday. Ordered the carrick customs parts today.

Upper radiator hose is going to be super gay. The carrick customs ac mount requires a different thermostat housing that points up. Talking to them, they make a pipe from mandrel bends to go around the back of the ac pump..... Not sure if I like that, but we'll see.

Flywheel is another thing I'm trying to nail down 100%. From what I've read the Ford clutch bolts right to a stock dodge flywheel and the only difference is the pilot bearing. So I guess I can just buy a dodge flywheel and have it bored for the Ford pilot bearing. Or call up SBC and see if they'll send me just a flywheel.

What's the trans? Should be a standard input shaft?

YotaAtieToo are you going to put the Cummins in as-is? (Cylinder head not coming off)

Talked to the mechanic yesterday. I was thinking do a reseal, plus HG/studs and check out the head. He at first said he wouldn't bother if it runs good, but now is saying that we probably should. I'd like to peek at the pistons and cyl walls too. So that's the plan.

Yeah, you should be able to get an off the shelf clutch and throw out bearing.

Booger, CamaroGenius' F250 got a Cummins. We kept the ZF5 he installed. If I recall correctly, we pulled the one out of the Ford 300 crank and dropped it into the Cummins. I am not sure if he had issues sourcing it when he installed the ZF5.

I don't regret that swap, so didn't post it ;) Also converted it to 4wd with a HP60 front and leaves.

Nice truck, there is a very similar one running around here. :smokin:

From what I read, you only need to bore the flywheel for the pilot bearing? Or were you able to use as is?

We did not bore the flywheel. We used an off the shelf one.

You're probably planning on it already, but I'd do a rear main seal while you're at it. Very easy job once the flywheel is off.

Pete

if you don't put dodge tow mirrors on... fail. :flipoff2:

why do you give a fuck about the radiator hose? you might as well just sell everything and go buy a new truck if youre worried about the dumb radiator hose routing :flipoff2:

Because I don't want a hack job radiator hose running all over the engine bay? I find it odd that with how common this swap is, that there isn't a definitive way to do it.

If all else could you just make it similar to custom intercooler piping just using stainless exhaust tube instead of aluminum? Like buy correct diameter stainless and either bend it yourself or have muffler shop bend it to shape, weld or roll a flare onto each end and use small sections of off the shelf radiator hose at the ends? Maybe cut off stock hose ends so you know what to purchase if need be on rd.

Weird, I wonder how different the 300 zf5 is from the 7.3 zf5.
There is no 300 ZF5, that I know of.

Who knows what CamaroGenius did. We just stuck a 1996 P pump Cummins in front of it...

So what, just throw whatever I can find in there and don't worry about trying to make it reliable or not look hack as fuck? What are you trying to add?
i was just curious why you keep bringing up the radiator hose, to me its not a big deal lots of people have done this before and having a radiator hose that goes across above the fan isnt really a concern. not sure why its a concern to you is all :flipoff2:

Well if you had read, that's not possible with the ac mount I'm using. Try paying attention.

i am paying attention, the hose will be going over the fan whether is goes around the back of the ac or not which wasnt really my point, my point was this has been done before and the radiator hose being a problem isnt a problem, youre making it into one. obviously im just wasting my time here so i will go back to lurking

Find a Pic of it going around the back of the ac then? Because I've been looking and can't find one.

Just seems ghetto to me, but I guess I might be able to pull it off cleanly. This was supposed to be like assembling a Lego kit damn it

I know for a fact you can do it cleanly and cheaply with off the shelf parts, but you seem to be hung up on doing it your way:homer:
That's why people do swaps that they later regret:flipoff2:

Hey I can hack shit together as good as anyone :flipoff2:

Fwiw, this is the mount I bought for the ac.

I'd like to keep the 7.3 rad, which has the inlet on the far driver side, same as the 2nd gen dodge rad :homer:

The shop has an idi rad out back, which has the inlet on the other side and would get rid of the stupid degas bottle. It's all metal too and would probably bolt in, it's giant as well

I obviously overthink the shit out of stuff, sometimes it pays off sometimes it doesn't. Sorry, not sorry you all got dragged into it :flipoff2:

As far as the "build" I hacked all the shit off the front of the dodge and got it about as ready to pull as I could. Not sure when he's going to get to it, but I think I saved him some time.

Also been blowing money on parts. Adapter, flywheel, motor mounts, shifter relocation parts, turbo, manifold, billet tappet cover, seals gaskets, ect all ordered.

I was trying to track down a 4" downpipe for a 04.5-07 5.9 CR that eliminates the cast elbow, as I think that would be very close to working, but I somehow can't find one. :homer: I may just wait to get it in there to see what I'm working with.

I prefer the F800 mounts better.

Then use a dodge radiator and not have the hose he's talking about.

Details?

I got the carrick customs mounts, they use stock dodge mounts, I liked that way better than the cheesy mounts dcs sells.

That won't work with the ac mount I got. My 7.3ps inlet is in the same spot.
Literally 1995 Ford F800 with a 6BT. Rob Bonney sold me the brackets - High Mount Alternator Bracket

I got a 165 amp 22SI alternator too.
Here is a list of the Cummins numbers needed for a complete set up:

Water inlet connection (Compressor mount) 3930888

22 SI Alternator Support 3930820

Tensioner 3978021

Tensioner Bracket (this will need modified) 3930838

2" Water Inlet 3941929

Orings (you need 2) 3906697

Belt Gates K080690
